Okay well understood now.
How much did you buy your female Uda ?
Nice thread.

The price depends on deferent variables.
1. Location
2. Season
This 2 mostly have impact on d price. I priced one 45k b4 sallah festive period but after sallah d price goes down again

I am a full time farmer bro I even ventured into tomato with drip this year. Sold some of my sheep to start the project. Like have said earlier they are better than keeping money in the bank. Great assets indeed
Very True!

NUTRITION
Let me give some vital point on the nutritional requirements of sheep. I learnt a great lesson from a farmer on YouTube that rears goat ( hamiisi semenda) and what he said was that we livestock farmers are actually into grasses and legumes business we only use our animals to convert them into meat which is more profitable than selling grasses. It is when people start treating this animals they way they are that you will make meaningful profit from the venture

Interesting... cool

There are different types of dewormers in the market. Albendazole, levamisole, ivermectin are the ones I use. I do rotate them to avoid resistance. Levamisole and ivermectin are injectable. Albendazole is in tablet or liquid form.

Nice one. cool

She lost one of the kids. She wasn’t nursing and caring for him at all. She didn’t accept him.
From my record she is a good mother who produces big offspring. This is her first time of giving birth to twins so I guess she taught it wasn’t hers. sad
Can't something be done about rejection of kids?

If you have multiple births on your farm during the rejection I believe you can find another ewe to breastfeed her but it’s a tedious process. You will weigh your options and see what works for you.

Re: Diary Of A Sheep Farmer by safarifarms(m): 11:59am On Jul 26, 2023
Jub101 why do you choose to focus on sheep only? Won't goats have been a good complement? And besides, goats seem to have higher market value/price.

I believe the care and management is quite similar.

This is exactly what happened to me this sallah period. After all the stress the expense. Free range is my best option now

How do you get adequate protein when you free range

Thank you for the question. The main reasons I consider sheep to be my main focus are plenty but I will try and mention some :
They are herd animals which suites the kind of extensive or semi intensive husbandry i practice
2. They cohabitate easily with the swampy area my farm is located
3. They aren’t choosy to the kinds of feed they are given
4. They are grazers which means they prefer grasses to tree leaves unlike goat.
5. They grow bigger and command more prices both male and female
6. They are very calm and easy to control.

Wow. I've really learned from your response. Can you through more light to your No. 2? Do you mean sheep thrive or adapt to swampy areas better than goat?
No.5 response is a surprise to me. I'd expected goats to command better prices than sheep. Perhaps sheep is more valued in your area.

Thanks for your response.

Goats don’t tolerate water as much as sheep do. Sheep can be left in the rain with no effect on their health that’s not true for goats.
Goats command good price and when you compare the prices of both of them due to growth rate sheep (both male and female) are more expensive.

I don’t! it’s their natural instinct from there first arrival to the farm. From my truck to tonic water to grasses sequentially
