purejustice36: In the U.K. white people attend yam festivals as well. If it’s good enough for the mayor of Liverpool (that’s how it was decades ago), it’s good enough for your average white Scouser, German or eastern-affiliated oyinbo Princess wannabe. Freshies who have never left their villages forget that we’re ultimately one human race. Black people are every bit as human as your average Caucasian or Asian (if not more-so without any-much Neanderthal admixture) and vice-versa. Oyibos aren’t a completely different breed of human who get weirded out by anything African. If anything there are more white people ego almost want to be black, or at least genuinely and deeply appreciate certain elements of the culture (and that’s not the same ting as cultural appropriation). We need to get over this obsession with skin colour. |

The New Yam Festival in Anambra State celebrates a harvest deeply rooted in Igbo culture. The festival features various masquerades that hold cultural and spiritual importance. These include Agbogho Mmuo, embodying a maiden spirit; Odo masquerades with vibrant costumes; Nkwa Umuagbogho, celebrating beauty; Mmanwu, representing ancestral spirits; Ijele, a massive symbol of unity; Okoroshi, warding off spirits; Ajọ Ofọ, messengers of the gods; and Ogbo Nsukka, a tall raffia-covered masquerade. Each masquerade contributes to the festival's cultural richness and marks a time of gratitude for a fruitful harvest. |
