@ Afrodoc, are you watching Les Bleus..

God, I can't wait for when Deschamps will be out as coach of Les Bleus! Why is Saliba on the bench for Lucas/ Upamecano? None of these CBs are better than Saliba. I can understand Lucas as LCB but Upamecano over Saliba? That is a travesty!

Deschamps no 1 quality is loyalty. That is why those boys also stay loyal to him. He is poor in most other aspects. I hope he goes soon.

Minimum wage is an indicator of the purchasing power of the people. A worker who earns 10000 can only spend 10000

Whether its in 1970 or 1990 or 2023.

Its the money people earned that they will use to pay school fees, A minimum wage worker in my time used 8 times of his salary to send his kid to Ife, you think that was easy for him?

You see why your argument is not supported by numbers but by emotions. I can go ask my uncle you bought a brand new car for N1500 so why cant I but a car with N1500 today

Minimum wage in your day was out of sync with the median wage. Bottle of coke was already retailing for N50 in 2000 when you went to Uni, so unless you are telling me many Nigerians earned the equivalent of only 5 bottles of coke, the minimum wage was arbitrary

In fact in year 2000, the minimum wage was increased to #5,000 per month.

So if Dayo went to school when minimum wage was N250, did he go to school in the days of Peter Obi and Peter Odili? grin

Lol, maybe.

The minimum wage was even reviewed in 1991, from #250 Dayo quoted, to #450. I'm sure it's pre-1991 figures he was referring to.

It might be true that minimum wage was N250 when he matriculated in the days of Abacha which will be 1997/98. The increase to N5k in 2000 shows the reality of what Nigerians were earning and the cost of things. Perhaps reviewing minimum wage was something military Govt had not paid attention to for years. I remember buying one pair of Okrika jeans for N300 from Isaac Boro Park bend down select in 1994, how can someone live on N250 four years later

That's even crazy cos my primary school fees was already well in excess of N1k by 1991 and it wasn't an elite private school. So minimum wage was definitely lagging massively behind reality even at then. Maybe something they pegged super low so serfdom in the North could stay within legal framework

I entered in the military days. I cant remember the price of coke but I remember 1 wrap of fufu was N5.

Actually you are wrong I remember 1 bottle of harp was N35. So Coke cannot be more expensive than Beer

That was because minimum wage was not increased until AbdulSalam came in. As at the time I entered it was surely below 1k
In secondary school I saw the payslip of one of our teachers and he was earning like N800. that was mid 90s

That said I support increase of tertiary school fees with scholarship for the top 5 or 10% JAMB scores and targeted courses like Medicine or any sciences where the country is lacking manpower

You don't need more than this to run a society successfully

"During the military regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nigerian workers demanded for another increase in wages, and there was negotiation against this demand in 1989 to 1990. The wage was successfully increased to N3,000."

Abdusalam Abubakar in 1989-1990, that's wrong, the article can't be relied on.

People were super poor in the military days. Almost every house was using wood and people started doing sawdust stove. Secondary school teachers owning cars was a rarity. I went to a public school and only Principal or VP will have a beat down 504 or Volkswagen beetle

It was during Obasanjo regime that teachers starter owning Tokunbo car starting with OPEL. That was actually the time I started seeing our teacher sef having sidechics

I think Coke was definitely N50 or N30 in 1998

In 1994, N20 buys me one meatpie and one Coke everyday in school, so start from there and build up

Read it properly especially the part in bold

They negotiated against the 1989 to 1990 demand and finally got N3000

They negotiated against the 1990 numbers

In 1994 that 20 naira should get you at least 2 bottles of coke and meat pie. Maybe 2 meat pies sef.

Crate of coke was about 300 in 1997-1998. A bottle could not have been 50 naira. More likely 20-25 naira.

Na why I no wan continue the discussion . During that period the economy was stable to a large extent , not so many people Nigerians get their salary from government accounts as civil servants .

Like u always point out, the exchange rate was fixed for so many years such that those who engaged in importation businesses were not always lamenting about fluctuation in exchange rate like we have now. So nobody was increasing general prices of goods and services every now and then. Shebi it’s when the there’s continuous rise in general prices of commodities generally labour will come out and start agitating for increase in minimum wage .

Parents on meagre salary can afford to promise children who take first position in class treat of taking them to Mr Biggs or BATA on the island year after year . I’m not saying it was all El dorado then , but things were fairly stable to an extent (unlike what we have now )

In as much as I am a believer in the welfare state it has become practically impossible to sustain some of the subsidies we enjoy due to dwindling resources and corruption some if not all will have to give way pending when things improve then they can be returned.

Yeah I think you're right. I forgot my daily pocket money also covered transport fare

I got N20 pocket money per day and that covered one Coke, one meatpie, and two buses home. I know the buses were N5 each making N10 for transport fare, so N10 must have covered Coke and meatpie

Meaning 1998 price for Coke would have been N20.

This is why the Arab people and other highly intelligent peoples around the world don't joke with their ancestors, forefathers, and cultures, unlike a majority of Africans.

As a human and African, the benefits of promoting good aspects of your native culture and traditions, while condemning the bad aspects, are enormous.
