Zimbabwe’s President Mnangagwa Appoints Son & Nephew As Ministers, Faces Outrage by Racoon(m): 5:20am On Sep 14, 2023
CNN - Zimbabwe’s recently re-elected President Emmerson Mnangagwa is facing outrage after appointing his son as deputy minister to the country’s finance ministry.

Mnangagwa’s 34-year-old son, David, was among 26 officials sworn in as cabinet ministers Tuesday despite public anger when the list of the nominees was made public on Monday. In his expanded cabinet, Mnangagwa’s son is to deputize finance minister Mthuli Ncube while his nephew, Tongai, would serve as deputy minister in the country’s tourism ministry.

Some Zimbabweans have accused Mnangagwa of running the impoverished southern African country as “a family business. Slowly Zimbabwe is becoming a family business. Mnangagwa Pvt (Ltd),” one Zimbabwean wrote on social media platform X. The creation of a dynasty is what’s happening right now,” another commented.

Zimbabwe suffers from a raft of economic problems, including high inflation and an escalating cost-of-living crisis. The local currency lost more than half its value to the US dollar in June, and the country owes billions of dollars in debt arrears.
Harare-based economics professor, Gift Mugano, told CNN Mnangagwa’s appointment of his son was unlikely to do much to address the country’s economic woes.

“It’s clearly nepotism. It doesn’t make any sense at all. Zimbabwe’s economy has been in doldrums for the last 25 years and we need the right critical minds to drive the economy. So, if you put someone who is just coming from the university in that critical ministry to support Prof. Ncube, who by himself has also failed for the last five years … to change around the economy, the president missed the point on that appointment,” Mugano said.

David Mnangagwa, who completed his law degree at the University of Zimbabwe this month, has also been a member of parliament after being handpicked by the ruling Zanu-PF party through a youth quota arrangement.

Before getting his law degree, he had earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Actuarial Science from Drake University in the United States in 2011, and previously worked as an actuarial associate in the US, according to his LinkedIn profile

The president’s son told reporters after his swearing in on Tuesday that he was “elated” but also “surprised” about his appointment which he described as “one of the toughest portfolios.”

Zimbabwe’s information secretary, Nick Mangwana defended Mnangagwa’s inclusion of his relatives into his cabinet.

“We are lucky when in the election of MPs there are people with professional qualifications and good experience in the pool the president has to pick ministers from. If some of those happen to be related to him, that doesn’t disqualify them for nomination on that basis only. They are also Zimbabweans,” Mangwana wrote on X.

The opposition CCC party, which placed second in last month’s disputed polls, also criticized the ministerial list which included a couple, Christopher and Monica Mutsvangwa, both associates of President Mnangagwa, as ministers.

“Constituted of his friends, family, loyalists and the least qualified, the cabinet is the worst since Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980 … It is yet another missed leadership opportunity for Mnangagwa,” the party said in a statement. Mnangagwa was sworn in for a second five-year term last week, after securing an absolute majority in an election deeply flawed by observers.

This is the trade mark of Africa's sit-tight power drunk autocratic and tyrannical leaders. They monopolise political power simply for nepotism, clannishness, ethno-religio-regional supremacist agenda just to continue to perpetuate themselves in office even to the detriment of their citizens and countries

Do those people qualified to be in that position?

Without their relatives, if they are capable in their professions, wouldn't they be offered an opportunity by whoever?

These are the kinds of brazen abuse of power and political privilege that the ECOWAS, AU, UN and other relevant world bodies will never seen any wrong in.

And when the soldiers struck now, they will start ranting their rubbish about allowing democracy thrive in their insatiable greedy and corruption mentality

The emilokan mentality is the bane of the African continent. “It’s clearly nepotism. It doesn’t make any sense at all. Zimbabwe’s economy has been in doldrums for the last 25 years and we need the right critical minds to drive the economy.

Racoon, please answer my simple question. This is not about Nigeria politics discussion for you to say I am taking side.

Do those appointed people have the qualification and experience to be in that position?

What was the trademark when President John F Kennedy appointed his own brother, Robert F Kennedy as the Secretary for Justice and Attorney General of America?

Was he also a power drunk African?

Was President Trump an African for appointing family members to his government?

Whatever might be the due condemnation for such appointment in Zimbabwe, you do not need to suffer inferiority complex and denigrate your own self.

CNN should have informed that Zimbabwe was doing as was previously done in America.

In one breath, your type lament about colonial imperialism, in another breath you prove yourselves to be under the manipulation of the very colonial imperialism.

I hope you know that the Middle-East countries we love to use as a standard of development, have the relatives of the ruling royal manage many of the critical positions that help to bring growth and development that both Europeans, Americans, and Africans are so eager to go there to enjoy either as tourists or economic refugees.

You would claim they are largely not a democratic society, but you cannot disprove that it is still not nepotism and clannishness, and it still got the job done just as Robert F Kennedy got the job done for his brother's government.

It's the same thing here in Nigeria.

Here First son, First daughter and First wife are running the government while their First Papa is

junketing and running around without any clear cut plans for governance and the the country.

In the case of Zimbabwe their president chose not to be subtle but brazen.

Africa keeps getting the greediest of them all as presidents cry

An average African leader treats governance like family business, only in Africa you will seen an unelected person exercising the powers of an elected official shocked. No difference between the predecessor Robert Mugabe and this willywilly named successor embarassed

That is black man.
Filled with greed from time immemorial.

They were slave merchants. Ready to sell their people for money and goods. Some other nations of the world resisted slavery but black man championed it. Black territories were so diverse but here we are narrowed in sub saharan Africa. All other parts of the world rejected us and made sure we don't count in the committee of nations.
Cos they know that our heart is pure wickedness.
Now we are the slaves of the world. We are programmed to be like that. When we had the chance eons ago, greed wouldn't let us become super powers of the world. Was surprised when I read cleopatra was a black woman. Egyptians sued Netflix when they came up with the latest cleopatra movie not because its not true but because they don't want to associate with anything black.
Black ruled Europe for yrs especially Spain.
Look at us now. Europe don't want to associate with anything bla k. Even Britain had black king and queen.

Let us continue to be greedy.
