mostob: I will blame her and I explained why earlier. We all know the Nigerian system is by default built on corruption and impunity. It's why the government is the way it is and the NFF the way it is. Sadly that has become our constant. The variables are we the people. We have to demand better of ourselves in light of this. We shouldn't be the one adding to the rot in the system. Do you know how much pull players like Mikel had in the NFF, and if he still wanted to he'll still he playing today? He just was a better human being and knew when to stop when he was no longer 100%. At some point, Joseph yobo was useless to the team and kept getting invites just to add to his cap. He however knew when to stop and a testimonial game was done in his honour. Musa used same guise to stay z announced himself that the last AFCON was going to be his last, only to be preparing for yet another AFCON while playing less than 5 games cumulative minutes the whole of last season. It's just wicked. Of course we won't stop calling out the NFF, but truth is we don't expect much of them cause of who they are and how they came into office. Players however will be held to the highest ideal. What onome is doing falls below all moral standards and she knows it. She was given the due respect by her being included in the world cup roster. Now she's just being wicked. 3 Likes 1 Share |

daveP: Basco defending things like this doesn't surprise me anymore. That's besides the point. They can keep inviting her, but someone like me won't get tired or calling it out. If you like call it wailing or crying, na yo u Sabi. Onome is just being wicked simple. If it's money she needs she should use her links in the NFF to get a secretariat job. 3 Likes |

Onome Ebi is not to blame at all. People can have all kinds of dreams and it is their right to have those dreams. It's like the Bash Ali situation. Bash Ali was a boxing star in the 1980s. Yet, in the early 2000s, he was camping that the Federal Government should support him in his bid to become the oldest world champion. President Olusegun Obasanjo initially supported him, but when Bash Ali had a terrible warm up fight, Obasanjo pulled out because he did not want to be involved in a suicide attempt. Bash Ali has tried to blackmail every government since then, but no government has agreed to back him. Onome Ebi can dream about playing until she is 100 years old. It is her right. It is for the coach and the FA to stop picking her. If she is still in the Super Falcons, then the coach and FA are to blame, not Onome Ebi. (There are many players that did not announce their retirement, but the coaches and FA simply stopped picking them). 2 Likes |

naptu2: My guy, you're comparing apples and oranges. The sport you referenced isn't a team sport. If onome was a sprinter or a boxer as referenced, no one with have issues with her dreaming. There's very little any sport federation can do with individual sports. There are benchmarks for qualifications and as long as you meet them you're good, you however can use your links to get a spot in them, you can only do that with team sports. I'll give an example, one of the male athletes at the just concluded world athletics championship was Seye Ogunlewe one time Nigerian champion and team captain for all athletes. He didn't make the championship in 2022 cause he didn't meet the mark and being team captain didn't change that. He however worked on himself and hit the benchmark, there's obviously no denying him then. The best 400m female hurdler in Nigeria (George Patience Okon) is also the oldest. No one cann fault that cause she hits the mark. Football however isn't an individual sport, it is a team sport. You can ride on the accomplishment of others to make the team. Nigeria didn't qualify for next year's Olympics (for the guys) cause of the same thing. A young Lebanese guy who naturalized was invited to the team with no known football history. The closest thing to football we knew about him was that he signed for an Azerbaijan 2nd Division nameless club 2 weeks before his invite. He is just a small example of the list the NFF and Salisu drew. Wasn't surprised Nigeria was knocked out buy Guinea. Point is, while we continue to call out the NFF, we expect little of them. We would however hold players who have worn the shirt and we've fought for their rights over the years to the highest ideals. We expect these players not to add to the problems we already face. Why is her dream not reflecting to club sides. Why has she been inactive for about 2 years and club less for a year. Why is the dream suddenly not working where merit is demanded? 1 Like |

daveP: Why should you accuse her of doing something funny to keep her spot? Do any of u have proof that she is forcing her selection? Why should she sit down and accept people destroy her character? How does wanting to keep doing something u love turn one into a bad person? Is it her fault that she dedicated herself to the sport and took care of her body? |
Re: Nigeria Female National Teams' Thread by naptu2: 3:34pm On Sep 16, 2023 |
lovewins: Apples and oranges. The sport that I am referring to is professional boxing. There are no benchmarks for qualification. If you can get the money, you can arrange the fight. Bash Ali actually arranged a fight (sponsored by AIT) in which he performed badly. He wanted the Federal Government to sponsor his world championship fight (to be hosted in Nigeria), but government refused to put up the money when they saw his performance. There are very many sanctioning bodies in boxing and he got one of them to sanction the fight, but no money to host it (he is still campaigning that government should sponsor his fight). But that's not the point. The point is that anybody can want to play for Nigeria, it's up to the coach and federation to say no. You heard Randy in that podcast. The NFF wanted to force a goalkeeper on him and he put his foot down and said that his contract says that he picks the team. Therefore, it's their fault if they keep picking her. 1 Like |

naptu2: They claim Randy exposed the NFF but still took their order to select Onome Even Okobi said Randy was the only decision maker for the list but they don't want to believe it. When Randy does what they like he is a great coach but when they don't like it, the excuses come out. |

BascoVanVeli: Stop doing asif you weren't here when we complained about Deborah. Guy just stop!!! This is also a terrible equivalence to use in this dialogue. Abegi!! Two wrongs doesn't make a right. So this doesn't count as defence for whatever angle you're trying to achieve with this. Onome will not be the first and the last. We've been here since the days of Yobo until he bowed out. Stop this pls. I don't need to be on any players side to defend or attack anyone in matters like this. This is purely sentimental right now. What has she done to keep getting a spot. Even if we shift the blame to NFF, the honourable thing to do like 100s of old players that have retired in the last decade, is to step aside. The fact that you have not even seen this beats me. Once again, nobody is hating on her. You were here when Rita stepped aside. Abeg!! |
Re: Nigeria Female National Teams' Thread by lovewins: 4:28pm On Sep 16, 2023 |
BascoVanVeli: As much as many were displeased with her inclusion to the world cup roster, we could at the very least rationalize it as a good way for someone whose dedicated 20 years of her life to the team to bow out. It's why I posted days ago that in hindsight Oparanozie going to the world cup was a good way to bow out. We aren't zombiesz we can make some sense of difficult situations. And this list wasn't drawn by Randy, the NFF did. Even if it were drawn by Randy I'll call both of them out. No scared cows. |
Re: Nigeria Female National Teams' Thread by lovewins: 4:31pm On Sep 16, 2023 |
naptu2: It still doesn't change anything I highlighted. Professional boxing, arranged or otherwise wouldn't hinder any other person. It is largely a money sport andike you pointed out, Bash Ali was at liberty to use his money or seek for funds to sponsor his adventures. Point is, it won't be at any other person's expense. One's case is different. |
Re: Nigeria Female National Teams' Thread by naptu2: 4:38pm On Sep 16, 2023 |
lovewins: Two things. 1) What you said is not strictly correct. There's an opportunity cost attached to money. Bash Ali wanted the Federal Government to fund his fight (that's the issue). If the government funds it, then that means that it's money that's not going into something else (like training a younger amateur boxer, in fact, many younger amateur boxers). The government saw that it wasn't worth it and refused to fund the fight. 2) Secondly, the point still remains that it is up to the coach and FA to say no, just like the government said no. Bash Ali and Onome Ebi can still dream of competing at their age (everybody dreams, whether it is realistic or not), but it's up to the government, FA and coaches to face reality and say no. |

Does Ex-Falconets Goalkeeper Omini Oyono Deserve Her Super Falcons Invitation? Former Falconets and Bayelsa Queens goalkeeper Omini Oyono is being singled out by some Super Falcons fans as not being ready for her invitation to the senior Women's team for critical Afcon qualifiers against Sao Tome and Principe. Funnily, that thought came to my mind. Omini Oyono looked very unconvincing at the U-20 World Cup last year. Her catching technique was particularly suspect. She displayed ineffective composure and looked overawed by the occasion. But, having said all that, she paradoxically actually looks the part to me. In my eyes, she has the build of a gifted goalkeeper. Oyono surely has the talents and will be hoping to improve. "Honestly, I am not proud of my performance in the world cup in Costa Rica," said Oyono to a Reporter from Punch newspaper. "I feel I should have done better, especially the mistake I made against Canada; it hurts me so much." She added. The good thing is that she knows she is far from that finished article. "My dream is to play outside Nigeria and show the world my talents, but first I need to first improve on the areas I am lacking to become a better goalkeeper." Said Oyono. About following in the footsteps of her former colleagues Deborah Abiodun, Rafiat Omuran and Tosin Demehin into the Super Falcons, Oyono said: "For me, I believe it’s a matter of time and grace, if others can break into the senior national team, I believe I can too." On one of her key ambitions as a footballer, Oyono concluded: "My biggest ambition is to make money, come back home and build a football academy in my state."

Stopped reading after this. The fact that you would lend credence to someone who made disparaging comments about members of the team (coaches and players), denied the comments and then went on to record an interview to pretty much validate what she said, goes to show where you get your facts from. Like it or not, as I previously said, Onome Ebi has outlived her usefulness to the team. She needs to leave the stage when the applause is loudest, else, those will quickly turn to boos and negate the great work she has done for the team in the past. Its her choice on which form of exit she want's her legacy to be pinned on. This latest team list was certainly NOT picked by Randy, as evidenced by some of the squad members who Randy would have never give consideration to. The Monle Oyono goalkeeper, for one, is someone Randy will never have considered. Ditto that for the Folorunsho girl, both of whom had poor performances previously at the national stage. This team is sprinkled with some good players to help mask the incompetent players slotted in. Nice try, NFF! BascoVanVeli: 1 Like |

daveP: 2 wrongs or not there is proof that another player benefited from what u claimed was corruption at work. Randy Waldrum made the decision as the coach not the NFF. He gave Onome the same benefit of a doubt he gave Debbie. Speaking of haters, anyone who says the NFF forced Randy to pick Onome sounds like one. U are making yourself believe a lie just because u don't like somebody. Randy gave the NFF the middle finger and did what he wanted at that world cup so lets stop changing the story. 1 Like |

BascoVanVeli: Read what I said again. First we shouldn't pretend like honouring veterans like Onome with slots so they bow out gracefully isn't common practice. It's a practice known the world over. So don't make it seem like she was in the team because of anything she brings to the table on the pitch. Martha, Rapineo and Morgan etc are examples of players who aren't playing at the level they ought to and were largely liabilities to their team. Decades of service however earned them a one last dance to the mundial. It didn't stop Americans from criticising them. Both Morgan and Rapineo always trended each time they played and not for good reasons. These players were however honourable enough to know that both they still want to playz the game has left them and it was time to take a bow. Mama however is doing the opposite. Mind you these players still play professional football at club levels and even have more grounds to continue should they want to than onome does. You can count in your fingers how many timesama has played professionally in 2 years, but you keep claiming she help. Why has that "help" not be considered good enough to earn her a club even with bottom leagues? |

lovewins: When u don't agree with Randy u always make excuses. Now you want me to believe that america selects players who are useless to their success. Rapino gets flack for her political views and not her play. The average American doesn't even care about soccer, they just want them to lose because of her mouth. She was one of the best players at the last World Cup so why wouldn't she get a shot at this one? Same with Morgan who was heavy on equal pay. Their quality clearly kept them on the team. If it were up to their federation they would be long gone. If those players were so honorable why didn't they retire at 29 years like Oparanozie That's the honorable thing to do, at that age they had probably played more than her with the national team so why didn't they retire and give the younger ones a chance? 2 years U don't have to resort to lies. Onome played in Belarus for a whole season with Regina Otu. Moved at the end and joined a la liga club. Things didn't work out and she left during the middle of the season. Of course she is thinking that another foreign club would show up so by the time she gave the NWFL a thought we had like 4 games until the Super 6 and there was no real use since the club she was going to join was not going to be there. She could have stayed at the Belarus level but she decided to challenge herself with such a tough league. If this situation happens to a player u like ur tone will be different. 1 Like |

BascoVanVeli: You obviously are good with twisting narratives. Your submission on Rapineo and Morgan with respect to the argument is false. Of course they get criticisms for their political views but that has nothing to do with the opinion most soccer fans had about them. That football isn't a primary sports in the US doesn't mean it doesn't have its own large following. It is the opinion of soccer adherents on these players that I sampled not th twist you conveniently gave to it. And don't bring Oparanozie into the picture. It's why arguments with you can be frustrating. Why bring an outlier into the picture. We are not indiscriminately asking players to resign. Players who resign professionally largely fit a certain mould. They would usually have paid their dues and are well advanced in age. That's the rule, Oparanozie's case like Victor Moses' is the exception. Don't strawman thos argument. While most will argue Desire has become a shadow of her former self and on merit shouldn't be making the team, she will gladly be welcomed with open hands were she hitting all cylinders. On the 2yrs, I was factually wrong and I take it back. I should have said the last 1 year. Every other thing said remains the same. 1 Like |
