That was sincere advice from a friend.
He has good job here in Nigeria, he should think of business he can be doing to bring in more money.

Again read my post again… but let me help clarify here.

You can work care jobs and buy house in Naija within 5yrs if you work live-in and save up on rent. The guy said you can secure your retirement in 5-7urs, common! America is not eldorado now. I for sure know what I’m talking about… unless you win a lottery or do some illegal stuff. You cannot secure a retirement in 5years working care or security jobs and paying bills abeg, especially a 50yr old man that probably have kids back home and send money home steady?

I encourage everybody to travel if you feel it’s the best decision for you, but we don’t have to lie to people about the realities though. We can be truthful about it while encouraging such people. That way they can better plan and they are better informed. That’s not discouraging anyone, it’s getting them informed.

Do you understand that the term "retirement" as used here is subjective and relative?

Your retirement plan could mean waiting for pension at 65 years while another's could mean saving up to $100k in 5-10 years and retiring back to Nigeria to live a very quiet and low-key life in some remote village.

As a caregiver, in my first year, I comfortably saved up $40k. I am talking about me here, now.

Abeg, I don tire for long talks.

Na person dey use him hand decide how e want take arrange himself.

Peace

My kid sister earns $25 an hour, sometimes $30 depending on the facility she gets sent to and a minimum of 12-hour shift with zero special skill other than the usual caregiving knowledge.

Abroad is tough.
There is no money for lazy people.

I see regularly peoples in the age bracket of the guy, new arrival to Abroad doing distribution of food job. With mostly dejected faces.
All jobs are good and honorable. But making money in foreign land is really tough.

Yes retirement is subjective but you never specific your definition of retirement, by moving back home. Even at that in 5yrs you cannot secure your retirement to move back to Naija.

You saved 40k in one year? 😊
Let’s dissect this. What state do you live in? Do you work live-in or you go home? How much average is care job paying in that state? How many over time averagely do you run weekly 😂

Even if you live in, you cannot “comfortably” save 40k in a year, that’s a BIG 🧢 😂😂😂 you no dey chop? You don’t have bills 😂

Let’s be truthful on this forum o!

There are some lies here.
Some posters are liars.
Anyway sha, in real life anybody I discuss with I expect some lies.

Reality is there is no money in abroad for lazy people, abroad is tough to make money.

There are people that are in America or other places for over thirty-forty years that don't have up to five thousand dollars in their account or investment.

I live and work in New Hampshire.

I respected myself and rented a small room for $500.

I knew what brought me to America, WORK.

I work on average 80 hours (week) at $20 per hour.

Sometimes, I run 24 hour shifts.

I pay $40 for unlimited data and call subscription per month.

Car Insurance $170 per month.

Gas for car $160 per month.

You know how you can eat whatever you can at houses you work at, right? I also do my African food but very limited.

I sew my agbada according to the material wey I get plus my stature.
Oya, help me calculate, sir.

@OP , the reason your friend is seemingly 'discouraging' you is because of the difficulty of you acquiring LEGAL Residency papers aka Green Card upon arrival in the US.

Without green card, all these 'illusionary' plans about career and wealth is gone.

He knows you want to come on a visit visa. How will you acquire green card upon arrival. 99% of Nigerians that go to USA and overstay their visit visa end up marrying for papers.

That process is fraught with uncertainty and danger. Let's say you are 45 years 0r 48. And you move to USA on visit visa and do arranged marriage to get papers ( because i assume you are married with kids in Nigeria), green card process can take anywhere from 5 / 10 years or more if you are unlucky or your case develops K-leg along the way.

Only after green card, would you even have the opportunity to further your education, then get that magical good job that people in Nigeria assume you get once you land in America. How old would you be then ? 55yrs?

Or if you migrate with your family, how would you get the green card. By asylum? Definitely impossible for a regular Nigerian unless you are under Nigerian govt persecution. Which if you were, your names would be on Nigerian newspapers.

Now, you see why your friend is giving you such advise to think am well ooo.
10 years from now he still looking for akata to marry, the days of marrying easily for papers are long gone.

Ur friend is just jealous of you.Don't listen to any advice from him and don't even discuss ur plans with him again until you have successfully relocated. If what he is discouraging you with are true, why has he not returned to Nigeria, wetin he still dey do there?

This is why I don't give people unsolicited advice. Look at a near 50 year old nigga with zero valuable skills that want to Jakpa to america.

Now the friend looks like the enemy for being concerned about you.

Sukkot come and see something
lmaoooooo bro it's the funniest thing ever. But you know what takes the cake ? He wants the guy he is seeking advice from to borrow him money to japa at 50. You can never get that money back. That's a loan write off. There is no way in hell he is ever going to be able to repay back japa loan at 50 . Japa money is in the range of 20,000 dollars

Having said all that he is smart in his choice of location. If at 50 he wanted to japa to Europe you know this is a man destined to die broke dejected and living in a rundown shared room or hostel. Cuz at 50 you can't do anything in Europe that is substantial. However Texas can be slightly favourable to a 50 year old man. He can drive uber. He can deliver pizzas. He can drive a taxi and with these he can afford to live in a one bedroom apartment. If he is strong and adventurous he can look into truck driving . He can survive in America but at 50 ? Just forget Europe because you are just going there to die. So I give him that. His location choice for his age is good. He will never make it unless he has a special grace in his life but he can survive and live another 20 to 30 years in a low to middle class neighbourhood just getting by till death comes calling. That's his lot if there is no special grace in his life

I think there was a thread about someone wanting to migrate at 40 and people commented that they even did it at 50 and they are okay. Probably find the thread and send DMS to those people.

I know a man that relocated after crossing 50, he had been dropped from work due to the worsening economic situations. People were laughing at him but less than 2 years after his wife and children joined him and they are all doing superbly now.

Edited: I think the op is one of those sponsored agents that keep discouraging young people from Japa. The main people behind this discouragement is what I don't actually know.

He is definitely aware of this and even more. Yes his rent would consume that money by 50%, say, but he would get true value such as (available) electricity, gas, clean air, clean agri produce(to a great extent), water, relative security while in his home(not riotous and disoriented fools easily marauding neighborhood or streets and no law enforcement would easily bring them to order), greatly comported drivers with regards for human life, govt can be questioned and you won’t be easily killed for asking questions on how resources/taxes are spent, and importantly a house built with standard materials and maintenance is assured compared to some shitty houses down here in Nigeria. All he needs is education on how to save/manage his expenses on gas, electricity, food and et all.

Note that I am not against your point, but I think we should be objective is sharing our thoughts with aim of laying all things bare for him to be guided

Houses in Nigeria are actually better built than the one's in the US, that are just basically flimsy wood.

Your ignorance and a refusal to acknowledge same is legendary.

What is IT, Medical, Technical, or the Big 4 skills you are yapping about?

Must everyone be in the above-saturated fields?

Okay, I'll attempt to school you a bit.

In Canada and the U.S., you do not need any utopian skills to get into the caregiving industry. With a good agency, you are sure of very good hours that can fetch you a good 5-6k per month....scratch that.

What is sub-zero weather and what has that got to do with age, building, and tasting what true life and the essence of it truly is?

What benefit is the Nigerian weather that's not sub-zero?

Sustematic racism don suffer for una mouth.

What is not systematic about the Yoruba man calling the Igbo man a sub-human/citizen, the Igbo man calling the Yoruba man a headhunter, and the Hausa in one corner getting demeaned and made a jest of.

Make una dey deceive una sef for there..

Wish I could love your comment a million times. People think because they have learnt how to write a lil English, they have the sole right to advise one on where or where not they would make it in life.

In life, always allow people come and taste something especially when you don't know their fate in life. That person could be the only person who would even elevate you and your family from your bad situation.

I have always maintained that people should be mentally checked before they dish out advices. One can be shot dead in Nigeria same as in abroad. Life is unpredictable. A route I follow and call bad, another could follow it and call it good.

Oga, I don't have time to burn on you...

People like you are wont to hyperventilate on things you have almost non-existent ideas about only to resort to insults when you are called out.

You make it sound like if you are overseas, you wouldn't need to bed in because you have some "skills".

Come sense ought to have made you realized that the most critical success factor for success in practically most endeavours is the determination and will to succeed.

The foregoing is what has made Nigerians thrive where others fail. You can have any degree of unskilled skill but it will amount to little if the will and drive are not there

Stop discouraging people who desire to go try change their lives...It I not like Nigeria is remotely an Eldorado...

Ask God where He wants your location to be ..if it is Nigeria, you will make it here more than those who are in America.. .some of them can't gift out 100 dollars to their friends and relations at.home like a poor man would dash put 100 naira without feeling it
