Leadership of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) disclosed that 112,351 out of the 204,332 cleared passport backlog across the country were yet to be collected .

The acting comptroller-general of the service, Mrs. Caroline Adepoju Wura-Ola, who made the disclosure while briefing newsmen yesterday in Abuja, appealed to applicants, who had applied in any of the passport offices to check their respective centers of application for collection at no cost, before it expires.

Mrs Wura-Ola who further assured that the NIS, under her watch would not relent in its efforts at providing super services to Nigerians, revealed that out of the over 204,332 backlog of passport applications cleared on the orders of the minister of Interior, only 91,981 passports have so far been collected.

She, however, reiterated the service's determination to remove all bottlenecks in passport application by putting measures such as increasing the number of passport production machines, as well as the involvement of staff in multiple shifts in passport production centers in place.

"I invite applicants who have applied for passports to come and pick them up without paying anything extra," she said.

The NIS boss who however blamed the high demand for the travel document in the last few years on the 'Japa syndrome' in Nigeria, assured applicants that the two-week timeline set by the federal government for the processing of passports would be upheld.

While explaining that both the service and its partners have upgraded their facilities to meet the demand for the international travel document by Nigerians, she revealed that efforts by NIS to make the passport application process fully automated had been concluded by both service and its partners.

In her words, one the process is completed, applicants would only visit passport offices for biometric capturing, as they would have uploaded their photographs on our portal

Speaking on the corruption at the various passport offices, she said, "Corruption is opportunistic, it is made possible where there is exploitive holes, I can assure you that any staff of Nigeria immigration service that is caught in any form of malpractice before performing their statutory duties will be severely punished, I have the directives of the minister of Interior, we will make scape goat out of tyrant officials."

Adepoju warned applicants to shun touts, and urged them to contact the Service via 08067761196 , should any personnel demand a bribe from them to get a passport.

"Any personnel caught demanding bribes would be severely punished. The Minister has directed that we make a scapegoat of any corrupt official caught," she said.

She also, however, praised officers and men of the NIS for working day and night including weekends and public holidays to meet up with his directive.

Lol you know where they live. Just mail it back to them. What does NIPOST exist for if government agencies don't even want to patronize them? It's mentioned there's going to be a cost in the future so why can't it be factored into the price of the passport?

Many would have changed address, so they have to update their addresses on the NIS portal then NIPOST deliver them.

Some people who applied for those passports are dead.

I will encourage the NIS to develop themselves to the extent of being able to mail people's passports to their addresses. We must not remain stagnant and be comfortable with practicing same old methods always.

I give the correct address and my document is delivered to me at my doorstep.

This is possible.

What they deliberately made impossible until the new minister came.

Keep the passport! The owners are expecting it next year going by the information the officers gave them at the point of registration. So keep the passports safe till next year. It only goes to show that things can work in this country if they want things to work

On a lighter note, may be the owners have printed another passport through 3rd party vendors😁 Na joke o!

Lol...there is one particular baba at Ikoyi, he will walk through the collection center crowd as if he's going to the back of the building, as a "Nigerian" you better follow him with your 2k and your name written in sheet of paper, your passport would be found in 10mins afterward and have your name called out loud in that public address system. If not, you will keep returning there for three days and still won't get your passport. Got there past 3pm, I used about 15mins to search for the man before he Waka pass me himself. Did it Nigeria way and In no time, got my Pali. While some people were there complaining of coming for days and yet to receive theirs. Corruption don soak our clothes for this country

It's a good one. But the NIS should create a system where applicants will be notified to come pick up their passport once it is ready for collection. I believe this will make the collection process a seamless one.

You can track your application on the NIS website. Check for a tab on the site called 'Track Application ' , input your details and you will see if your document is ready or not.

Let me tell you the Ikoyi format because when I went there there had been people coming for many days and hadn't collected it because the queue is just too much. So when I GOT there I went to the immigration officer woman who helped me with my application, she gave me a very good advice, she First asked me, are you travelling ? I said no, she said, JUST FORGET ABOUT COLLECTING IT THIS WEEK THAT THE QUEUE IS TOO MUCH AND THAT I SHOULD COME IN LIKE 2 WEEKS TIME WHEN THE RUSH TO COLLECT HAS SUBSIDED. I mulled the idea over and thought ? Hmmm ok let me go and see what she is talking about. So I went to the collections. The crowd there was like that of the World Cup finals in a stadium. The crowd stagger me. So I decided this woman gave me good advice, let me go home. I will come back in November when the rush has subsided. However I wanted to be sure that my passport has been issued before I left the premises so they directed me to this office where they asked for my enrolment number. I gave it to them. After 2 minutes the lady told me your passport has been issued and go to the collections to collect it. You see ehn, after she told me that my passport had been issued the kind of STRONGHEAD that overtook me ? I then decided I may as well try to see if I can collect it. I entered into that sea of people at the collections, it was hell, people just pushing you about, stepping on your shoe, everybody sweating and frustrated. I contested with the crowd for like one hour, then I started hearing stories of people lamenting that they have been coming everyday for days and have been unable to get it because of the huge crowd. My liver just fail me. I then decided it's in my best interest to come back in November after all I am not collecting the passport because I wanted to travel. But my STRONGHEAD kicked in again and I dipped hand inside my pocket. There was 10,000 sitting there just languishing. So I decided its time to do business. So I started greeting every officer I saw and told them I want to do business. They thought maybe I was undercover journalist and just laughed and walked by but this particular guy had a jovial face. I kept over-greeting him anytime he walked by and finally he pulled up and said what do you want ? I said chairman I want to collect my passport but that crowd is staggering and scary. I said I am willing to pay 10k. The man looked at me intensely and said listen I don't do that . Then he walked away. 10 minutes later he walked back and said what's your name and enrolment number , he took it and disappeared. He reappeared 10 minutes later with my passport in his hands and directed me to where I was to do the final process. That's how I got the passport in the midst of a football crowd who had been coming for days. I was willing to part with the last 10,000 in my pocket but I ended up not parting with a kobo and getting the passport
