I know you will go there. In life everything has its own advantage and disadvantage. Everything is governed by LAW with great consequences for disobedience of these laws. America leaders know they have great number of enemies around the world that are always planning to attack their large innocent citizens.

The leaders know that they can't provide 100% security of life and property for its citizens during enemies invasion when they lest expected hence the reason why people are given licenses to own a gun. It is expected that few number of people who are of minority number will abuse it, even though they are working hard to improve on the existing law that gives license to own a gun, it does not mean the practice/ idea of owning a gun is bad.

On the other hand if we were to go by your ideology, there are some technologies that the world would had thrown away just because it didn't favour some people. Aircrafts and helicopter crash every year yet people still fly in them, people die in marriages yet people still get married every day, Cars crash everyday yet people refuse to do away with them, industrial machines have amputated peoples legs and hands yet these machines keep working in our industries. People die to stray bullets from soldier and police guns yet the armed forces aren't throwing that metal away.

The usefulness or uniqueness of a technology is measured by high advantages it offers over its disadvantages with right rules and regulations ( couple with brutal enforcement of these laws ) in place.
