raumdeuter: My mama trained her boys to do everything a woman can do and that includes cooking. As an adult immigrant, understanding the importance of saving and efficient management of financial resources is your first and most important step to financial success in the diaspora. This is because if you follow the spending habits of Americans, you will struggle financially and just live pay check to paycheck with no savings or asset. How about phone, cable and internet plans? Memberships and subscriptions nko? Cars nko? There are people who are obsessed with drinking a cup of coffee that costs $10 or more daily! How about waste of food and groceries in the house? Those wen dey smoke 2 packs of cigarettes daily nko? 3 Likes 2 Shares |

TemporaryHansel: Like they were carrying the Achraf Hakimi or whoevet's story of him hiding his assets in his mother's name. One time, too, they said a Nigerian was promoted to being the president of WHO, and even Buhari himself congratulated him, but I checked WHO's website days later, and other reputable handles but I couldn't find anything like that. Even the man did not post it on his socials. The news reporting industry in Nigeria is sht. All of them just copy and paste and follow each other like headless chickens. 3 Likes |

Roland17: The worst thing to do is to immigrate and start living Oyinbo lifestyle. That your Aussie colleague you are emulating by eating out and going on vacation yearly started working and contributing to his pension at about 16-18, and at age 30 has already bought his own house (and is well into paying it off) and has 100k to 150k saved up in his retirement savings. Meanwhile you as a Naija guy come in at 30 and when you convert your 5m naira savings it is less than 10k. 2 Likes |

afrodoc2: Na pesin head wey no correct go get budget problems from eating out, but some folks just love to perform. Despite being a frugal nigga, I still find money flying out at rate of knots and I'm not seeing it reflected in the clothes I wear or the food I eat. Na kids activities dey drive my lifestyle inflation. Sometimes I look at what I lived on as a student and the kids are gulping that in just activities, parties and presents monthly. And it's very sneaky as well. Your wife will just tell you, honey I'm signing them up to piano lessons, it's £50 each, you nod head and £100 has flown out the door for lessons where they will probably miss 2 of the 4 lessons in the month. Add football lessons, tennis, dancing lessons, swimming, these guys are burning money. Time done reach to review all these things. What use is 45 minutes of football lessons a week and they can't trap ball, something you can teach them better in your back garden. You've been paying for dancing lessons for 3 years and they can't even do basic one-two step, na to dey twirl hand for air like ballerina, a dancing style they will never use in the real world. Even parties they attend every other weekend and must buy present so that they can also receive present when it's their birthday. These are the insidious elements of lifestyle inflation that you won't notice creeping up on you like a thief in the night. 17 Likes 2 Shares |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by afrodoc2: 2:09am On Nov 23, 2023 |
Ibime: Very true. The lessons too plenty. What about language lessons? Swimming lessons are practically mandatory here anyway, you no fit dodge them. Different sports lessons and music lessons. Then different costumes for different plays at school and church. If you wan go on holiday/vacation na capital project. But as a family man na the price of your peace in the house and your kids integration into the society be that. I was actually talking more of the single recent immigrant. If you are cooking your own meals, you can cut your feeding expenses by 50-75%. Cooking can save you over 1,000 dollars a month, and that is if you are not eating out fancy. Then all those subscriptions and memberships that Roland alluded to. Those things are the things that chop your money without you noticing. If you buy a house or buy a car and you go broke you will know instantly what caused it and you can rectify accordingly, but those quiet lifestyle choices that impoverish people are sometimes hard to recognize. It might even be the choice of store you buy your clothes from or the sheer volume of clothes that you buy. The guy will be living paycheck to paycheck and will be wondering why he is broke. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

Ibime: when we were in the UK, my old man HATED christmas because all the neighbours would get us [the kids] gifts - which meant he HAD to recipocate . christmas was AWESOME for us as kids. for my dad, not so much. there are pictures of us absolutey surrounded by presents 2 Likes |

afrodoc2: Nna I go review all these activities abeg. I realise say na my Madam dey cause all these billings not the kids directly. Even piano lessons they grumble every Sunday that they don't want to go. Last weekend my son walked out of football practice after 10 mins saying he's not doing again and my daughter walked out halfway through like some NLC worker, and they are always grumbling before they go. I later asked my wife how much we pay for football, she said £38 for each per month, and they miss half their lessons anyway. I said cancel it from December. From now we will only pay for what they show passion in and take initiative on except swimming which is a life saving skill. My papa no pay one kobo for me to play ball and I never failed to play everyday and twice on weekends for free. These guys can't trap ball after 3 years training and plenty billings because they ignore the footballs I strategically placed around the house and do no practice outside of their lessons. See those costumes billings na another one. Christmas dance and drama shows are coming up and between billings for costumes and buying show tickets for all and sundry, I come dey wonder if I dey train pikin for university. But if I play Kizz Daniel song, dem go dey move off beat after how many years of these dance school billings. But bring any Naija pikin play beat, dem go dey move on beat without going to any dance school. I believe we just dey whine ourself with these things, and outsourcing certain life skills at premium cost. Heaven will not fall if I dance with my daughter every weekend, I guarantee after 3 months she go dey move rhythmically while if I play ball with my son for garden for 6 months, he go dey raise 10 easily. All these lessons na keeping up with the Joneses wey mummies group dey do. 18 Likes 1 Share |

GloriousGbola: They are everywhere. One gym that i went to ONCE a few years ago still dey send me text messages about bonanza memberships till today. One store membership that i signed for when i first came here almost became an albatross around my neck, until one day i called them and changed it for them before they cancelled it. I had to go full native on them, the girl on the other side was almost crying. I no be gentleman like that. 3 Likes |

Ibime: Na why i talk say it is partly for peace in the home UNLESS you and your madam sit down and come to a decision. The latest craze is language lessons (50 dollars per hour to learn French/Spanish/Italian/Chinese etc). The society is set up to finesse any small change you have out of your pocket) na you as a guy man go give yourself brain when water starts becoming more than garri. |

Spy360: We-men do not factor that much for a single immigrant abroad compared to back home. All those hidden taxes like money for t-fare, money to do hair, money for chin-chin are not issues outside Naija. When I was in active service I didn’t have to spend, and my guys were not different. It is in Naija that women will siphon a single man’s funds. |
