One fact about Nigeria is that your pay is not determined by your certificate. It is determined by what the employer can afford.

Teaching job is not easy to come by. Some schools use one teacher for 3 subjects. A guy i know was a teacher and a school bus driver (He collected that one to boost the salary to about 50k)

Everything is possible here oh. Some primary schools are like kiosks. Na that one go fit pay 20k per month?
Had an ex fresh out of Law school her salary was 45k flat. She resumed 9 and anyday wey she no tey for office she will leave at 8'oclock. Depending on her Oga's mood she had to show up on Saturdays sometimes

They don't just underpay but they use and squeeze every buck out of your body.

Teaching is even good but you see those so-called professional jobs. You will be used and abused. If care is not taken they will add house boy to your job description

My wife just even told me she uploads salary schedule for some hotels and companies where cleaners earn N7,000 a month and they even deduct the money for late coming grin

Na to apply to work night shift in one of the hotels when I close from my 8-5 grin

You really don't know what you are talking about. Most factories here are run by Chinese, Lebanese and Indians. You are on your feet for over 8 hours. Then you will go and be on your feet for 8 hours in another factory. Consistently not as a matter of crunch. In a high pressure environment with brutal working conditions. How long do you think you will last if you work 16 hours a day 6 days a week?
Factory workers in the same abroad work 2 to 3 jobs. All these ones are cheap excuses.

Also someone is likely collecting 30% from that money. The facilitator. I thought these things only happened with government. In 2019 we needed a guy in Abuja at short notice. My friend who I called gave me someone and insisted I pay through him. My friend was basically taking like 30% of the guys salary. I was weak. And this friend na full blown alfa.

If you are negotiating salary and you tell the interviewee to give you figure you will see for yourself that rates vary. Someone in lag will say 100k +, someone in abeokuta will say 80+.

I did my NYSC in a factory. The Chinese and Indian run factories are complete deads end and dangerous to your health. You are barely keeping body and soul together.

Outsourcing is one terrible thing that happened to the labour market in Nigeria. They now outsource cleaning jobs too; the company u are deployed to thinks they are paying u well for a job that requires only primary 6 certificate, but ur outsourcing primary employer has chunked off as much as 30% of their income as "finder's fee" or a more refined "consultancy fee ".

Most times na the humane permanent staff of that company go just dey reason u small cash once in a while based on say u loyal and dey respectful to someone that can even be ur younger brother's mate.

If he is not trolling he is talking from a position of ignorant privilege. I am middle class. Fam has a place in lag. So already when I started working I was not paying rent.

During my NYSC I was able to stay with a very nice family. I was literally feeding free and taking 20 minute okada to work every day. I literally saved all my allowee. Maybe then too I would have thought I was more hard working than my less fortunate peers.

Privilege does that to a person.

When you are in a few states that are economically viable, you tend to assume other states are like that.

My friend in Abeokuta who has NCE teaches in a school where he's paid 15k monthly. He doesn't spend on transportation. The wife earns 45k in another school but spends almost half on transportation.

Where will that kind of family get money to hire househelps. And they are not the exception. It's the norm for most families in that place.

I'm using Abeokuta because it's where I grew up and know quite well.
I love this extract. So you friend and his wife are teachers and they likely close from school by latest 3 and then go home without doing nothing else to support themselves. No other job or business to run? This is the lazy mentality am talking about. Those same people abroad will work 2 menial jobs after closing from their various schools just to survive but in Nigeria you see how they do nothing. Give us more examples of lazy Nigerians.

Business in Nigeria is certainly not easy. I'm no longer even seeing the point for now especially for those of us outside Lagos. It's not easy. Most people I know here who really succeed in business get contracts from government officials and their cronies.
you just have to master ur business....businesses makes more profit now, especially if have mastered the art of doing business.

Thunder fire him and his privilege. He's just a stupid mofo. I'm most certain he has no privilege of note

Anyone with half a brain that has lived or worked in Lagos knows that Lagos is not a place you can even juggle multiple points of paid employment.

The average employer in Lagos is not paying you just salary he has an inbuilt entitlement to your time which is the biggest impediment to juggling 3 or 4 jobs. Overtime no dey Nigeria oga dictionary. He has hired you so you can be his nanny, errand boy and lots more

Where I worked in Nigeria, the cleaners worked 10hrs Monday to Saturday plus few hours on Sunday and only got paid 25k per month.

If you work 10hours per day in Australia…. That’s cool 112K dollars per year. ($36 an hour)…. Hold your leaders accountable instead of hating before you die young grin

Adenuga no get any good reputation at all in the corporate world thanks to his former employees. There are wild stories of Adenuga going around even till this day.

I've heard a version of how ur encounter with him in the elevator can either get u sacked or promoted.Guy man can just meet u in the elevator, ask if u work there, what department do u work and talk about what u do there. He can either be impressed, ask u to take a walk with him while engaging u further and later have u promoted to a higher role. OR He may have u fired by ur superiors chastising them for employing a wrong fit for job in his organization.

You go see hotel staff begging when you go lodge in Nigeria.

Adenuga is the face of what wholly Nigerian run operation will be

No union
Every last person na third party contract
Everyone salary domiciled in his bank so if you are not sharp your acct can be frozen
Man can sack your ass arbitrarily
The only standard is ogas standard. Talk too much and he tells you go and found your own company.
Salary increase and promotion is 'discretionary'
Every contractor is a related party

As someone who don work with Indian employers I know people that have no value for time you couldn't pay me enough money to work for someone who wants to use up all your time.

People think money is the most important currency but it's actually time. Any work you're doing that's not giving you time to self improve you should aggressively seek to leave for somewhere else. Whatever they're paying you you can already trust Nigeria economy to make mockery of it

Go and check people working those type of jobs. 10 years they're in the same spot like dog chasing it's tail and last last they will still fire you eventually

They will not even allow you to develop.

They were giving me one form to fill on paper. I had a laptop and I used that to do it. That was how the Indian manager said the guys should go and learn to use pcs. He was content with them doing things in the most difficult way possible.

You will see men on age 40/50 so called senior managers with 100k in their acct. (in 2001).that incidentally was the value of money I saved during NYSC. What a manager was saying was his life savings.
