From time in Nigeria early 2000s Access Bank does this Bond thing that you cannot leave them for a certain number of years or you pay a sum back. And many have always argued that such violates labor laws

If the staff decides to get another job what are your recourse?

The only thing that you can do is have an agreement with another company that your staff cannot cross over to them.

Anything else is non enforceable, especially if you are not a large company.

Ironically you are repeating word for word what my old man had to say about Indian doctors. He worked with them in UK and in Saudi and he did not have anything good to say about their competence

At work I worked adjacently with some Indians who knew their stuff and directly with some fking ediats. There is a wide spectrum. Maybe it's tied to their caste system or something

Many of them in US depend on H1B work visas and its easy to use that to hold them for blokus. Without that incentive they are just as bad as anyone

They also do a lot of parapo. If you have Indians in your class in school you will know this
There is no level of dagbo wey dem no dey do but they have this innocent mien that makes people assume they are innocent
There is no exam in this world that Indians will not dagbo, whether its board exams or certifications or school exam.
I once saw a new some years ago that Canada caught some Indians with fake IELTS

If you go on "Blind" app and see people complaining about Indians for workplace you will see that a big percentage of them are just dagbo merchants. They also have their own NCANN too, Its not uncommon for something bad to happen and another Indian will claim its the Telugu people ruining their name

Are there examples of companies who will agree to this? Cos at some level it becomes a violation of labor laws and you can claim its slavery

So Access Bank is treating me bad and I cannot leave to another org not because I dey owe them money but because they trained me to do their job?

Thats a lawsuit ripe for harvest in any proper society

Put pen to paper. It's not illegal to do it. Have option of first refusal and a cap of engagement period before they can leave. Some agencies are doing it. Absolutely above board.

Say two years on full or part-time engagement.

It's the same thing VCs like Y Combinator do: Take risk with early-stage startups, get the right of first refusal to further funding rounds with a cap on participation. It's even right there on Y Combinator's website so it won't be wrong for others to emulate this. After all, you are investing in their upskilling so should get some sort of equity you can cash in.

------
If your guys are into web development then I have a few guys they might like. They can do background checks and all to vet too.

Modern day slavery labor violation lawsuit go too tap in a couple years time if you attempt that.

A better approach is the one Semicolon does where they allow you pay for training upfront (2M) or a down payment of 25% and then you pay back with interest when you get a job offer.

My friend in Berlin is an alumni and has paid off their loan.

Talent must move. Even if you be my papa and Google comes calling tomorrow, I mooove grin

What happens to a poor broke but sharp and talented guy who aced the interview and coding test but cant raise the money

An enforceable clause. Example: "Cost of training for 6 months is capped at #4 million. Onboardng for basic recruitment for successful candidates is XYZ amount monthly renumeration for a period of 1 year. Onward review occurs at the end of stated period and successive salary review.
Trainees who break this term and seek other employment before the expiration of this contract are required to pay 90 percent of the training expenses."
Guarantors are required to sign and a period of 7 days for review so the excuse of signing under duress doesn't come in.

At that point, it's your right to enforce it.

How do you enforce it in Nigeria? Put the 4m debt on their credit file or what? Use police to pick them?

Only the honest ones will admit they are going for another job

What of the - I am burnt out, My mentalhealth is poor, my grandpa die for village, I am depressed, My wife dey sick etc and I want time off for 1yr? What do you do? How do you know they are going to pick another job? Force them to stay and work and risk them deleting your database

If they engage another company outside Naija shores how do you even know? Best case is to wait for them if the company comes to you for reference check but if dem no do reference check

I think Nigerians are doing okay in the Tech and outsourcing world for now.
Over Xmas I had this conversation with a friend and we came to conclusion that the fastest way to grow Nigeria was to develop outsourcing. East Asian countries have the jump on us

India has like a 20yrs headstart over us and China maybe like a 50yrs headstart. What you will call the Tech revolution in Nigeria started less than 10yrs actually closer to 5yrs. In 2010 If you mention you have a Developer based in Nigeria people will look at you funny, but nowadays with the growth of online training platforms, the knowledge is spreading faster. And more Nigerians are tapping into it. Around 2009 In the US, At a very big organization I was working, I sent an email to a Distribution list and one Nigerian guy came to look for me cos my name was Nigerian the first he is seeing in the Tech side while we had over 300 Indians. Nowadays Nigerian names are getting more and more common in these space

I still think very few people are into Tech in Nigeria compared to those countries. The more Nigerians get into that space the more we establish ourselves as a force in it. Because we have what Indians don't have which is determination and die there mentality

We have some natural disadvantage. In the world of outsourcing the biggest currency is Trust and perception.
An average westerner hears India/China and thinks smart, They hear Nigeria they think something else. If you are a white guy calling your bank and their call center is in India/Philippines you will be like Shitt I have to deal with terrible accent, If you call and hear Nigeria your mind goes to something totally different. It takes a while to correct that

I have called Microsoft M365 to troubleshoot a license issue and the rep who picked it a smart girl that sounded young with a familiar accent, Pa pa pa in a few minutes figured the thing out and resolved it. After the call I asked for her name and I wasn't wrong she is Nigerian based in LAGOS!!. If I am to hire someone I will get her immediately

Dayo, I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this post.

Considering our population, we have a ton of opportunities in IT and knowledge based systems for international organizations that we need to explore. Also, if we exploit this opportunity, it will lead to higher investments in IT facilities and infrastructure to support the systems as it grows.

What happens to the sharp broke accounting graduate that can’t afford certification fees? If you’re too broke to afford the training fees, YouTube is still free. There’s multiple free resources you can use and the currency you’ll pay is time and discipline

My guy in question worked as Access Bank teller in Lagos for one year, saved and scrimped, sold his lappy and still borrowed from friends to come up with the fees. That kind of adversity is usually the fuel that forces you to really invest effort as there is everything at stake

I hear you

How much is semi colon paying him per month? If its 200K that means your friend salary for the next 10months was prepaid by him with the company running no risk at all and getting his output and work for free

Can the company fire the employee for any reason even if he's coming late or sleeping in the office? if they fire will they refund the money

The funny thing is the foreigners that caused this particular incident are even fellow Africans from what I’ve read online . They are most likely Namibian or Senegalese from an eyewitness account I read 🤦‍♂️

Omo no talk this one for outside.

Indian resource (as in resource based in India, and not UK/US based resource of Indian descent) behave very similarly to Nigerians in my experience. There's good and bad talent, highly skilled resource and grifters blagging their way through roles, highly conscientious workers and lazy bums in every workforce.

But the idea that Indians take work more seriously than most is a big MYTH.

Brah, I've worked with a lot, and alongside a lot in my consulting travels - and the majority of the ones I've worked with are shït, having either lied about their skills and qualifications to land on jobs they couldn't do, to being unable to produce documentation in simple English, to being incredibly lazy bums.

In my experience, they work well on repetitive task roles where they have to follow scripts, like call centres, but that doesn't require additional work ethic beyond basic gumption.

No talk this thing again for outside. grin

Totally agree with this.

In all of my experience with diverse people in the workforce, I have never seen a set of people play the blame game like these folks.

Infact when you read their email and response to issues, you can sort of sense it. Although they tend to quickly behave when called out on it

That house is registered under their Disco

That house must be paying tenement rate to the LG in that state.

That house must have an owner, which is documented in the books of that community

How come there is an unknown Senegalese and Namibian that the state is trying to uncover?

You see this country?

As it stands one does not only need to know what his or her neighbor stores in the house, but needs to be willing to take the bold step of blowing whistle if it’s something that can harm u.

I’ve watched videos of some of he victims whose houses were affected . It appears they know those guys storing the explosives . The victims in the interviews were saying it boldly on camera that those Guys are foreigners who use dynamites for their mining job.

Imagine knowing they bring the explosives to the house and they never raised alarm a major tragedy happened and effected their own house now . How government wan take know if dem no raise an alarm ?

I watched Seyi Makinde’s press briefing this evening and he mentioned it that they have identified the particular company . He promised they will do everything possible to bring those responsible to book.

He sounded like a man who knows what he’s doing/saying . I will give him benefit of doubt.

Maybe he no wan jeopardize the job of the security operatives .

My own is they must make know the name of the company and parade its promoters and Nigerians who work hand in hand with the foreigners . We must know if there are many more of such companies in Nigeria and how they are able to operate this long .

One of the eyewitness/neighbor claimed the foreigners had been living in the apartment since 2013.
