Lookman had just switched allegiance to Nigeria in February of that year, and by March, you fielded him against Ghana for a crucial World cup match? Is that not carelessness?

Lookman and Calvin had barely been welcomed to the Super Eagles when Eguaveon threw them into a blazing fire and they rightly got burnt. We had players that were Nigerian-born and bred or had at least played African football enough to know how to play Ghana, yet, Eguaveon dropped them for Lookman, Dennis, Bassey, all new cats.


It was a foolish thing to do and Nigeria paid for it. 2 years later, these same players that faltered against Ghana are flying in AFCON because they have gathered the necessary experience.

Not as if we are playing rough/hard like the Cameroonian team of old nor playing ultra defensive like the Greek team at Euro 2004.

You guys are describing our present brand of football as boko because we don't score too many goals but that is because we are losing many chances and not for lack of creating.

Granted, the team might not have the fluidity of Nigerian teams in times past but that is because we have switched away from our traditional 442 to a whole new formation.

Congratulations again to the Super Eagles for making it to their 16 semi-final. Should be an AFCON record if I'm correct. Kudos to the boys.

My Player ratings:

Nwabali - 8.5 God bless whoever recommended Stanley to JP. We finally have a goalkeeper. About yesterday's game he was at his solid and calming best. Defense did well to shield him most of the time but he still made crucial saves when called upon. His reflex save to deny Mabululu in the early minutes the highlight for me.

Ola Aina - 7.5 Started like a house on fire but dropped a bit in intensity as the game wore on. Was guilty of giving the ball away a few times towards the end of the 1st half but was solid in general. Didn't have as much influence in attack in the 2nd half.

Ajayi - 7.8 Solid performance from the West Brom man. Looked shaky on occasion but helped to keep the shape of our impregnable backline.

Ekong - 8.0 King Kong as solid as ever. Always in the right spot clearing dangerous balls. Marshaled the defense expertly. Real minister of defense.

Bassey - 8.0 Strong, unyeilding brick wall of muscle. Couldn't venture forward as much due to him having to cover for Zaidu ( more on him later). Out muscled every Angolan forward who came his way. Future great.

Zaidu - 6.5 The game exhibited the best and worst of his game. Full of energy and speed but lacked the final pass and intelligent ball. He was obviously the weak link in the defense that almost conceded in the early minutes due to not marking his man on the corner. Won't be too harsh on him since it was his pass to Simon that led to our goal.

Iwobi - 8.0 In my opinion his best match for the Super Eagles at this AFCON. Provided midfield control and was full of energy before he tired out. His clever chip to Sanusi that started off the sequence leading to our goal highlighted just how crucial he was to our overall game yesterday.

Onyeka - 7.5 Frank the tank! full of energy as usual. At a time seemed to be single handedly battling the Angolan midfielders especially when Iwobi came off. Warriors performance.

Lookman - 8.5 Ademola you legend! I guess he's filling the 'Victor Moses role' for Nigeria in this tournament. Took his goal damn well. Full of running, skill and heart.

Osimhen - 7.5 Somewhat subdued performance from our talisman but he was still a threat. Troubled the Angolan defense best as he could after the foot stamp. Was unlucky to have his goal cancelled by a marginal offside call and should probably have scored later in the game. Overall his tireless running and never say die attitude continues to inspire his teammates.

M.Simon - 8.5 Man of the match performance from the Nantes winger full of guile, skill and pace. His intelligence and movement for his assist to Lookman can't be praised enough. Was a constant threat to the Angolan backline with his dribbling and speed. Worked admirably for the team.

Substitutes:

Yusuf - 7.0 Took a while to get into the rhythm of the game. Gave away a few careless early passes but became solid once he settled fully into the game. Helped maintain our structure and organization.

Aribo - 6.5 Didn't impact the game as much as I would have wanted. Remember a counter attacking foray he messed up. Overall contributed to seeing us home.

Onuachu - N/A Didn't get enough minutes for me to adequately judge his game but did well to help run down the clock.

Omeruo - N/A Didn't feature much in the final minutes to get a rating


Overall solid performance mixed with some good fortune.

Some people need to understand that tiki taka & beautiful football is the worst tactics to employ in a cup tournament especially in the knock out phase because all what the opposition needs to do is to sit back and play you on the counter and score and after scoring they will park the bus and continue playing you on the counter untill they score again or untill the 90 minutes elapses while the tiki taka team will be passing and passing untill the final whistle

If SE was relying on Osimhen for goals then SE would have drawn all their group matches.

SE only scored 1 goal which Osimhen scored in the group games and the SE did not score from open play in the other group matches.

1 was penalty and the other was own goal. How to get the best out of Osimhen should be the coaches priority and changing his position and role should be considered because SE needs someone that presses and defends from the front like Osimhen.

Lots of things usually work against us in the semis and finals of most afcons we have played, apart from players' errors, biased refs have been huge problems for us. You need luck most times in the semis and finals, look at the way countries like E-Guinea, Guniea Bissau, Cameroon and even Angola kept kicking our players up and down with no strong bookings and red cards from refs in this Afcon. But for the strong mentality of our players, we would have exited this tournament by now. If Oshimen had not used his intelligence to call the attention of the ref in our game against CIV, we wouldn't have been given that penalty. Look at the game of drc vs guinea, two soft penalties in the game. There was a clear handball against Angola the ref looked away. These are factors that can ruin a team's chances to lift an afcon no matter how good they are. Even VAR has been added to the mix.

Good thing about this team is that all the players are potent in their respective positions all we just need is for one or two players to turn up the magic even if others are playing at 50% capacity

I must admit, these players have been awesome and proven most people wrong. But let's look at it closely, it's a new trend we are seeing in Afcon, with Cape Verde, Mauritania, Guinea, E-Guinea, Mali, and DRC, including the north Africans and other traditional big soccer-playing countries all parading foreign-borns, the reason the Afcon has been of a very high standard and bridging the gap between the perceived smaller and bigger soccer playing nations in Africa. This trend has come to stay and we will see more foreign-borns opting to play for their countries of origin. Good for the game.

Onyeka did well but Iwobi was more effective with his passing and control of the game.

It was a big let down by Eguavoen to have started the three debutants.

I could not believe my eyes when I saw that lineup, and then the view got bleaker when I realised he had no plans to field Iheanacho.

One of the most mind-boggling coaching I have ever seen from a SE gaffer, and to do that against Ghana was simply unforgivable. Ghana wasn't even decent, they were ass! We had a team that deserved a World Cup berth and he threw it away with idiotic decisions.
