Elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Dantata has thrown his weight behind the move to transition from a presidential system of government to a parliamentary system.

Dantata, while speaking on the development on Thursday, said the parliamentary system is better than the presidential system of government because it is cheaper.

The nonagenarian stated this when some members of the House of Representatives spearheading the transition move paid him a consultation visit at his Kano residence.

Recall that the House of Representatives has passed, for the first reading, the bill seeking to transform the presidential system of government into a parliamentary system.

Titled ”The Bills proposing constitutional alterations for a transition to a parliamentary system of government,” it was sponsored by sixty lawmakers and read for the first time during Wednesday’s plenary in Abuja.

Briefing newsmen after plenary, the spokesperson of the sixty-member group, Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki (Sokoto, PDP), said that the proposed alterations, when passed, would significantly impact the national political landscape.

According to him, over the years, the imperfections of the Presidential System of Government have become glaring to all, despite several alterations to the constitution to address the shortcomings of a system that has denied the nation the opportunity to attain its full potential.

He said among these imperfections are the high cost of governance, leaving fewer resources for crucial areas like infrastructure, education, and healthcare, and consequently hindering the nation’s development progress, and the excessive powers vested in the members of the executive, who are appointees and not directly accountable to the people.

He further noted that the bills presented seek a return to the system of government adopted by our founders, which made governance accountable, responsible, responsive, and ultimately less expensive.

Dasuki explained that with the presentation of these bills, the House hopes to ignite and provoke a national conversation about the future of the Nigerian governance system, to ensure robust public debates, stakeholder consultations, expert analyses, and a thorough and informed decision-making process, to raise awareness about the significant development and to encourage constructive dialogue on the potential implications of these proposed constitutional alterations.

“Today, we stand on the cusp of history, as lawmakers across party affiliations and regional backgrounds come together to present bills proposing Constitutional Alterations that seek a transition to Parliamentary System of Government.

“These bills, seeking to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, advocate a transition from the current presidential system to a parliamentary system at all levels – federal, state, and local government.”

This is the first sensible move made by our senators of lately, parliamentary government is what Nigeria really need right, they(senators) should also sponsor a bill to reduce the salaries and allocations of all political office holders in Nigeria, anything to reduce the cost of governance is a welcome development.

Restructure Nigeria back to regionalism.

Let the indigenous peoples develop with their peculiarity and grow through healthy competition with other regions.

In a regional system, the North would perfect their mining and Agriculture, the SouthEast and South-South their oil and gas exploration; the middle Belt, food production and processing and our refineries would have been working by now.

The land-grabbing being perpetrated by the Fulani in the Benue would have been deemed an act of aggression and would have been curtailed by now.

Its only in a federal system that the North would foist the brain-dead Buhari on Nigeria and the SouthWest support a microphone-licking great grandfather Tinubu to be president.

In a regional system of government, these men would have been relegated to merely entertaining courtesy calls by visiting politicians who felt nice and polite.

When the suffering of Nigerians started under the leadership of Buhari, why was this parliamentary rubbish not raised then? Now the South is in power, still trying to wriggle out of the economic mess started by Buhari, they came up with this. I laugh grin grin grin grin grin

A parliamentary system without direct election of the prime Minister is not good...
A parliamentary system that will need parties and coalition to form government will pave way for instability, we cannot afford to continue running elections due to cost...
We tweak the parliamentary system to enable the prime Minister to be voted directly by the masses and would not need party or coalition to form government...he would just select ministers and focus on governance..
Parliamentary system biggest advantage is that u can not have a dullard as prime Minister...unlike the presidential system where the president can easily hide

Regionalism or true federalism is the best way to go. Parliamentary or not can never bring the desired growth.

Even if you have regional system, there must still be a federal government, and the federal government will have a system, presidential or parliamentary system

It is a misnomer for a poor country like Nigeria to be parading a presidential system of government. I am an advocate of a parliamentary system that cut out the Senate or reduce to a ceremonial status.

Parliamentary is not the solution. We should be talking about regionalism and unicameral legislature.

I know, I just want them to start work regional government first before going towards parliamentary government, and not parliamentary government before regional government.
That way, any of the governments excesses can be checkmated if not caged sef like someone said two comments away.

Do you get my point?

If it happens I'm certain it would be 200% better than the Presidential system. It won't solve all our problems, but it would permanently set us on a path to real progress. After that, maybe we discuss regional government. We need to understand at this point that, we either 'die' by maintaining this socialist styled fiscal arrangement where everyone goes to Abuja to collect FAAC allocation at the end of the month, or, we breakaway from each other and allow everyone progress locally with the FG standing by to aid. We are at the very cusp of something perpetually great or damning. From this point, this country either dies or it starts on a path that brings true prosperity forever. Everything that can make this country work should be in the conversation moving forward. Enough of this militaristic protectionism of government. We need to move forward. Nigeria is crying to move forward, because it has all it needs.

For him to speak out, it simply means that Tinubu's government is no longer favouring their family. Don't be deceived by their hypocritic cry. When their brother Buhari was wrecking the economy, he was silent.
