Towards the end of 2021, I took the decision to go into farming and to farm coconut partly to it's free maintenance while growing and the opportunities in coconut trade in Nigeria. Honestly, it has not been easy, but it has been fun with a lot of experience. Please share your thoughts and experience if you are into coconut farming too.

What's your target market?

What's your target market?

Small time retailers in Ogun state, Lagos and Ibadan in Oyo state. We are also looking at having a small mill to produce coconut oil. We have an off taker close to our farm warming up to take delivery! cheesy

When the harvest starts coming in gradually, you will forget about all your challenges.

Dear friend,
You can not totally eliminate crop(coconut ) stealing by hoodlums in the farm, but there are some measures to be taken to minimize it and which all depends on your geopolitical zone/state your farm is located.

For example, my farm is located in south west and precisely Ogun state. Here they fear charms and juju. We have been using false Charms placed strategically where it can be seen with a false narrative to a close villager on what the charm is meant to do and it's efficacy and it has been working. Also we make friends with other farmers bordering our farm and have chats occasionally.

Sorry guys for my absence lately. You know it is a farming season and we needed to prepare the land for planting.

While we were preparing for another season, we harvested some of crops.

It is the first harvest on this land and it is encouraging.

Sorry to ask, where did you get your suckers from and how were you able to manage them during dry season.

My plantains were really dyherated during the dry period, some that were supposed to start fruiting broke into 2. It's so saddened

I got my suckers from Local villagers within our farm. How I managed the farm to reduce casualties is by leaving some trees on the farm to control winds. Also, we reduced spacing amongst the plantains while they grew. I used another strategy to plant around May/June when the rains are much in other for the plantains to have enough water in the soil when they start fruiting. But among these strategies, the closing of spacing and trees within the farm really reduced casualties.

I have been following your trend from the beginning. I just acquired 4 plots in Mowe/Ofada and i plan to plant the Dwaf species round the property in L shape. What is the advisable distance, Although I just needed few of them to be planted for now.

Thanks for following our write up and suggestions. Since the coconuts are dwarfs, you can use 3 meter (9feets) spacing.
