It is a 2 edged sword. I have worked as an employee, as a manager and now I run my business with about 40 workers. I can tell you an employee would feel used by his boss until he starts his own business and employ people. Most workers don't care about your business just as you feel employers over use thier staff. As for me I identify people that take my business seriously and prioritise them. The matter long, you need to have experienced both to understand better. 3 Likes |

Rapmoney or whatever you call yourself. Stop making people to hate who gave them Jobs. There is even no Job in Naija, people are surviving, you are dishing protocol. If they eventually loose the bird at hand, how would they manage to catch the two in the bush? 1 Like |

Antai123: He should take more responsibility to be indispensable. One day boss want to get ride of him only to realize. He would be minding his business when they would double his salary. Even new persons for those positions needs training each. |

faceland:For where?, Oga forget that thing, I did more than him, I saved a whooping 20million for my former firm, and I was paid 200k as incentive, I saved lost of cost. The day I was sacked it was just a pronouncement. That guy should better start investment, take courses that will improve his chances of securing a better job. And stop pleasing Nigerian employers. 5 Likes |

faceland: I use to believe this, but I learnt this is not always true Sometimes appearances is just as important as reality, taking more responsibility might make you look desperate, like you don't have options, and nobody likes a beggar, (there are more movies made about criminals than beggars), the employers would never double your salary infact they would come believe they are doing you a big favour by paying you at all. You can be hardworking but always add a little touch of selfishness and self respect, it makes them value you more. 2 Likes |

Rapmoney: Thank you sir. What are the things we should ensure are captured on the employment letter. Some employers basically give letter of appointment/resumption with nothing significant captured on it. |

Kenmatt: There's no scarcity of jobs . If only our elders had seen the trajectory by 2000, we would had been building kiosk and medium workshops in their millions, which would had progressed to heavy industry; and awọn useless courses in the university ( many of them are useless in Nigeria economy) would have been replaced by purely technical vocations of max 3 yrs. Instead , each administration out their heads in the sand. Even in America, wise ppl are running away from the university system; it's enslaving ppl to useless elites , instead of bringing out their creativity. Back to industrialization. 4 Likes |

Advice is actually one of the cheapest things to offer, even when the advisor cannot dare practice what he is advising others. Everything you said there is correct, 100%. But the fact that people initially, especially in Nigeria, are grateful for even seeing where to go to every morning and return in the night so they can have 30k into their bank account at the end of the month is a think to ponder over. Many know what they want, but they also know that what they want may never become reality because of the environment they find themselves. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I think it all depends on the relationship you have with your employer and the company structure. I work remotely for a company and can go for 2 weeks without doing anything. But then, whenever I'm called upon, I strive to deliver even if it's not in my job description. Sometimes I answer my boss at 12 midnight and handle some little tasks. My dedication and working beyond my job description has earned me a place in the company that they're afraid of my leaving the job. It's all in the plan, make yourself indispensable especially for a startup and when they start growing, request to be paid in stock instead of cash (salary). However, when working in a toxic environment and they start deducting your salary, resign immediately. Even in my current job, any day they deduct 1usd from my salary I'll resign immediately. |
