How Abapower Is Overcharging Me by jmoore(m): 7:53am On May 06 |
I have made several complaints to Abapower customer care and they have not resolved this, that’s why I am bringing this out to the public. Abapower placed us on the wrong band, thereby overcharging us, which is extortion. My district is Ariaria district under Ukwa 33 feeder, Enyimba transformer We are on prepaid metre. I previously complained about the 95 naira per unit they were charging us because the power supply in our area is poor, only to check a week later to see that they have increased the charge to 102 naira per kwh. R2SB-NMD is what is on our receipt, which is a wrong classification. To paint the true picture of power supply in our area, I took down records from Sat 27th April to 3rd May 2024. Sat 8 hours supply, Sunday no power, Monday 3 hours supply, Tuesday no power, Wednesday 45 minutes supply, Thursday no power, Friday 1 hour. Out of 168 hours, they only gave us power for 12 hours 45 minutes of power supply in a week, which is not up to 10% of 168 hours. This means the average supply per day is around 1.7 hours a day. The lowest band category by NERC is Band E, which is a minimum of 4 hours a day but we are getting an average of 1-2 hours per day and are being charged same rate as those in Band B. 30 Likes 2 Shares

yhunusanni: I can't give the correct tariff for those in band A but Abapower said on radio that they are not implementing the 225 naira. So it should be less than 200 naira. 28 Likes 3 Shares |

aieromon:You are wrong! Do you know more than abapower staff? There is a weekly radio programmed aired live on Magic fm here in Aba for abapower to inform the public. They are under NERC regulations and tariff. 1 Like |

jmoore: 1. What is the tariff rate for the different Bands under their franchise? 2. On the NERC website, all Band A feeders for 11 DISCOs are listed. Why is APL missing? https://nerc.gov.ng/media/nerc-approves-new-band-a-feeders/ Sure, NERC regulates the power industry in Nigeria. However, NERC does not have the powers to fix tariffs for private entities. The Nigerian power industry is transiting from service-based tariff plus government subsidy to cost reflective tariff. Geometric will buy gas at premium price to power their turbines so why should they subsidise cost of kWh for its end users? 2 Likes |

aieromon: The information is not in public domain, can't find it on their website. But I am suspecting that every prepaid customer in all bands are currently being charged 102 naira per kwh. 2 Likes |

jmoore:I really doubt Aba power is affected by NERC regulations and tariff. Aba power is 100% owned by the private sector. 1 Like |

jmoore: There is a reason why their website is silent on tariff information. As for the tariff, you did not factor VAT in your calculations. (1400 - 97.67)/13.7 ~~ ₦95 In contrast, Ossiomo Power in Benin offers 24/7 light at a rate of ₦145/kWh. 11 Likes |

The distribution companies are thieves, since their licenses are expiring soon, the government should take them over because it doesn't make sense turning such an essential service to a private monopoly, they'll only be out to exploit their customers because there's no incentive to do otherwise. Such services should be exclusively be provided by the government. 7 Likes |
