There were major incidents of flooding in the Mende and Aboru areas in 2020, 2021 and 2022 and the Lagos State Government subsequently issued contravention orders to owners of properties that had encroached on the right of way of the System 1 Canal, a canal that is a very important drain on the Mainland.

Contravention notices were issued in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Late in 2023 the residents, accompanied by the representative at the Lagos House of Assembly went to see the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources. The Special Adviser to the Governor on the Environment was also at the meeting.

At that meeting the residents admitted that they had been served contravention notices since 2021.

However, a singer, Yemi Alade, recently said that the residents were only given 2 hours notice before their properties were demolished. This thread documents all the events, beginning from the floods.

Lagos Fire Rescues Nine from a Sinking Building

Nine trapped victims have been rescued from a sinking building at 45, Akinyemi Street, Akinwunmi Estate, Mende, Maryland Lagos

The alert which was received from a sister agency, NEMA at 10:00 hours Monday, was quickly followed by the deployment of the Ikeja Fire Station.

On arrival at the scene, it was discovered that nine female adults were trapped in a storey building which is sinking given the terrain of the environment and coupled with the overnight heavy rain downpour leading to flooding.

The Firefighters swiftly swung into action, rescuing all nine alive without any form of injury with the compliments of other emergency responders at the scene.

The rescued victims are all in stable condition while search and rescue operations have been concluded with the evacuation of all at risk.
It should, however be noted that rights to personal safety lie with huge sense of responsibility which requires every sense of responsibility

which requires evacuating unsafe areas including floods, defective structures and hazardous vicinity.

Still 2022.

Floods: Lagos To Demolish Marked Structures In Mende, Aboru

The Lagos State Government has threatened to demolish some marked structures on drainage alignments and setbacks in Mende, Maryland; and Aboru in the Alimosho area of the state where floods have wreaked havoc of late.

The State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tunji Bello, in a statement on Tuesday, said it is regrettable that after several of such warnings, the residents of the areas have refused to move but would rather resort to cheap blackmail of having nowhere to relocate to.

Bello, who spoke against the background of a viral video of some people being rescued in Mende, emphasised that the area is a lowlying flood plain.

In the statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adeshina, the Commissioner advised residents of the areas to relocate forthwith.

“While pleading for calm from all residents, he stated that the drainages have the capacity to contain water runoff when the rain stops just as it is happening already.

“Bello said the heavy torrential rainfall which started in the early hours of Monday and still continued on Tuesday afternoon has caused flash floods in many areas.

“He reiterated his assurance that a minimum of four hours after the rainfall ceases, the water level in the lagoon will go down, allowing water from major collectors to flow into it and enabling all flood water that may have inundated our roads and streets to leave the streets,” the statement added.

[Throwback]

On 21st of December, 2023, the leadership of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources held ANOTHER stakeholder meeting with Honourable member representing Kosofe 1 State Constituency at @lshaofficial, Hon. Sanni Ganiyu, and the property owners of structures built on the alignment of System 1 midstream (Odo Iyalaro - Mende - Ojota - Ogudu reach) following several other meetings held previously.

Here (video attached), the property owners confirmed that they do not have valid documents and have been served several contravention notices.

The Ministry have always engaged stakeholders and give notices before any action is taken.

Issues have existed since 2021. @yemialadee, Let’s use our platforms to educate people on dangers of building on Canal paths, this is better for our environment and for a better Lagos of the future.

(He provides video evidence)

Yemi Alade @yemialadee

Yes, the developer is in the wrong, but why was this not checked in the very beginning when the architectural plan was shared ?when it was time to demolish , why were the tenants not directly informed. Most residents own these homes.

Jubril A. Gawat @Mr_JAGs

There is a history to this issue, Everybody (Landlord & Tenants) were informed from 2021, informed again in 2022, 2023 and 2024. We also had a major flood issue that people died in 2021 too. Their Stakeholders came to the Ministry with their Assembly member. It was part of their request to get Governor’s attention, Mr Governor approved the reduction of the 140m to 100m. Try to get more information on the subject matter pls.

Some residents of Mende Villa Estate posted documents to show that they had approval, but the documents showed that they had conditional approval (the condition was that they should not encroach on the right of way of the canal).

So why doesn't the US where houses are annually flooded due to torrential rains and severe weather events with some houses even carried away, resort to demolition of the flooded houses as the only solution?
Houses flooded, solution is demolition of such houses;thunder strikes or rains, not even heavy rains falls, solution is to immediately cut off power supply in Nigeria!

I don't think you understand the US.
There is no remedy for severe weather such as hurricane other than not building where it occurs regularly
and that means permanently evacuating a large portion of a state population.
As for flooding too, some are unavoidable regardless of planning.

By the way, the US regularly demolish houses for thousands of reasons such as zoning violations, environmental hazards,
eminent domain, Urban Redevelopment e.g road construction. The developers also understand the risk of building without approval.

Here is a piece of advice, avoid building without approval.
If the climate prediction about Lagos flooding is right, there will be a time where the residents
will be the one begging the government to demolish unapproved buildings to save others.

Unapproved buildings are on borrowed time.

Lagos is almost entering the Atlantic Ocean geographically so there'll always be flood occasionally. Don't use this normal flooding consistent with coastal areas as excuse for demolitions.

Even if you demolition 100% of houses in Lagos, there'll still be occasional flooding. Coastal cities like Venice, Sicily gets flooded constantly. Countries like the Netherlands and Italy gets flooded.

We know the game plan but our electoral choices remains our electoral choices and will always be based on equity and justice!

Mende wey I know like the back of my hand.

Many built houses that later sank into the ground.

Pako bridge linking Mende at Ajose street to Ojota, used to have a house that only the top window of the 1st floor was still above the ground. It eventually got demolished and the mechanics around there expanded their workshop over it.

All the canal pathway within Mende has been turned into one estate or the other. In those days, you will stand on the ground near the swamp area of Mende, and the ground will be bouncing.

Same thing applied to Arowojobe Estate in Mende, but people kept on sandfilling the swamps and building houses like no man's business.

Gone are the days Alligators used to be found in the canal areas of Mende

It's only demolition in Lagos that matters, the ones in Abia and other states are ok.
These people are delusional and blinded by their masters.

I hope they will take their kobo kobo investments out of Lagos, overpopulation is not an investment. We need fresh air in Lagos.

PLS GO AND DON'T COME BACK.

Yemi Alase has an Igbo mother and I understand her Chinedu spirit showing.

Fortunately, the good people of Lagos are now wary of bastards like this and know how to handle them appropriately.
