Onana with his playstyle will have crazy off days but with a stable defence in front of him, he has shown he's capable of holding his own. One thing he has going is his mentality. He has shown that during his Ajax days, he showed that at Inter as well. He was very instrumental in their run to the CL final.

Even if you pit prime Neuer between the sticks with the way the team defended this season, there won't be much difference in the number of goals conceded. As a matter of fact Onana had the highest goal prevention of any keeper this season in the league.

Let's give him a stable defense and see how far. Same applies to Hoijlund, he was the least passed to from teammates among strikers in the PL this season. Imagine that. They were barely creating anything for him and he was feeding on scraps. Oga turned to a wrestler out of frustration. I pray whoever is in charge next season addresses these issues.
Thanks to the coach that came to end eras cheesy

Claiming aerial balls as well, but that’s not as important as distribution.

Onana is outstanding in passing ability and distribution. No top team has a keeper who can’t distribute.

De Gea has better reflexes and shot stopping ability. Onana isn’t very much behind him in that regard but you can make the argument that there’s still a difference.

How many points did his passing and distribution ability give us this season? DDG’s shot stopping ability would have been better for a team that faced 600 shots. Seems you have forgotten the stupid goals Onana conceded this season. Very shitty goals that cost us over 5 games.
Re: Official Manchester United Fan Thread:''20 Times EPL Champion by nitrogen(m): 1:20pm On May 20
Completely agree that if your team possesses the ball 70-80% of the time, then Onana would be okay. He won’t need to face plenty shots and can help with his passing ability while making occasional saves (as needed).

But this past season, we needed a proper shot stopper to avoid conceding stupid straight shot goals. Go check Onana’s 23/24 highlights na.

DDG conceded 1.13 goals per game in 22/23, Onana did 1.57. Clean sheets 17 vs 9. Of course, he faced more shots than DDG, but the former has been normalized using number of games. Total saves to shots conceded is relatively the same.

I agree that another keeper is needed for ETH’s ‘style’, but we did not see any new style in the last two season, and DDG would have fared better due to the shitty system oga played this season.

Onana’s first 6 months were terrible and he singlehandedly ruined our champions league campaign. No arguments about that.

But if you think De Gea would’ve fared better if he were still in between the sticks this season, then you’d be lying to yourself. De Gea had been shiit for about 3 consecutive seasons before we booted him out. His shot stopping ability is overrated towards the end of his United career considering the howlers he dropped consistently.

I don’t think he is consistent and reliable enough as a shot stopper and I voiced my concerns before he was bought.

If I wanted to give a critical analysis I would say his reflexes are not the best and his hand is not the strongest. I am also not sure of his aerial prowess.

He will perform better behind a settled defence but let’s not pretend like Onana has not had his shortcomings.

Those shortcomings still doesn't make him a wrong buy or the club got it wrong. You are isolating his current coach and environment.

Ronaldo performed badly under ETH, did the club get it wrong in signing him?

Is there any player under ETH giving us Elite performance?

It is really difficult to judge any player under ETH tactics..

Unfortunately none of our ball playing defenders were fit or available for large parts of the season. That’s why Onana’s ball playing ability didn’t help the team as much as you’d have liked. Instead we had to rely on his shot stopping prowess, at which he is at best on par with DDG.

If Onana played with Martinez and Shaw together for large parts of the season, we’d have kept the ball better and avoided so many shots.

Won’t be the case wirh DDG.

Care to add the number of shots faced per game stats too?

Onana faced close to 600 shots this season. 17 shots per game average.

I can bet you DeGea faced a fraction of that amount. Last season De Gea conceded 43 goals.

This season Onana conceded 58 goals, 5th best in the league. (Yeah, go check that stat. It’s weird, but it’s true).

We conceded 13 in the UCL tho, which is an atrocity.

Conclusion: De Gea had a more stable defense and midfield in front of him, faced way less shots and conceded 15 less goals than Onana in the league. Juxtapose them, Onana is likely to do better.

Replacing De Gea with Onana wasn’t a terrible decision, even though Onana didn’t cover himself in glory during his first six months at United. We should’ve moved on from De Gea a long time ago.

I will judge ETH and a number of senior players tho, cos they’re the reason our season went to shiit.

Rashford. Martial. L. Shaw are prime suspects. They dropped a huge ball. Captain Moaana too. He was shiit for most part of the season. Then there’s the stubborn ETH that blinded himself with favoritism and refused to give the right players minutes.

Mark my words, he’ll play Casemiro in the final, which will make us completely lose the midfield and lose the game as well.

Nitrogen, if we had a good shot stopper, how would we have known ETH is playing haram football?
Same thing DDG used in killing himself...he stopped so many shots, then when he had his bad days, we all put the blame on him.
But was he the real problem??

Fair enough. I believe he will improve next season in a better system and with a more settled defense, but i had these doubts about Onana before we bought him. I did not know it will be this bad but i knew he has a mistake in him.

I am not asking the club to replace him after 1 season as we have more pressing problems but at the same time i don't think he was the right choice. I hope he proves me wrong. I am not on an anti-Onana crusade.

Tbh, I am happy that we all could see that ETH is just not good enough. DDG was not the problem at all. I am sure with him as Keeper, we would have conceded fewer than 58 goals. But I agree that we need another goal keeper for whatever non defensive style ETH wants to implement.

He has learnt to hunt and fend for himself. No need waiting inside the box for a cross or cut back that won't come, or making runs and getting neglected. Had a turbulent first season yet this is his most productive season in Europe. He has promise.

This forward line still has a long way to go. If we don’t get rid of these selfish forwards, the attack will not improve.

It was good to see Rashford eating his nails while sitting on the bench today. No automatic stats for anybody. Perform and gel with the team or sit your ass down on the bench.

Onana is still a good buy. He took some time to settle, and that's understandable considering he just came in and hasn't gotten a constant defensive partnership because of the injuries. ETH's weird tactics also exposed him to a lot of shots. Most goal keepers will struggle under these conditions.
