Mankind2024:
The Breweries present a falling knife phenomenon.
What does it mean to ‘catch a falling knife’ in trading?

There’s a saying on the trading floor in Chicago and I’m sure it was on other trading floors: “Don’t add to a loser”. That was always considered completely taboo.

You’ll also hear it called: “Catching a falling knife” in some circles. I know people who are constantly averaging down to better prices in stocks and commodities.

Some commodities are down 44% on the year and continue to fall and some people are saying: well, ‘X’ commodity is constantly in deficit, so I’ll average down to a better price.” They’re catching a falling knife and if you can visualize that, it’s not a good thing to do.

Not many people know this, but when a stock or an asset or a commodity makes a low, it’s more likely to make another low, statistically, than for it to stop at that point and turn around.

Back to the falling knife phenomenon.
IB is likely to test sub N3.50 or less, by December 2024. if there is no turnaround after the current RI, then, potentially heading for DELISTMENT by 2028 or thereafter. The current RI is the 2nd in less than 5 years.
The RI of 2019 Nov/December was a fantastic failure.
International Breweries raised N164.39 billion through a rights issue of 18.266 billion ordinary shares of 50 kobo each at N9 per share. The said rights issue was pre-allotted on the basis of 17 new ordinary shares of 50 kobo each for every eight ordinary shares of 50 kobo each held as at the close of business on November 6, 2019.
The Management claimed it was fully subscribed.
To me, I'm of the opinion that some selfish people are in to acquire this Breweries at a give away price of Sub N1. A hidden agenda cannot be ruled out, anything is possible in Naija.

NB still falling, may likely stop falling and breach the N30 by year ending, may recover fully from the phenomenon, earlier than predicted.

Champion B may likely test sub N2 by year ending, potential delistment vs buy out. New owner vs conflicting state interest.

Guiness is difficult to call, might delist if there is no turnaround, the management of the company is still in denial. It was rumoured in mid 2023 that the company was planning to exit the Nigerian Market. Time will surely tell if there is any incubating exit plan on their agenda.

The falling 🔪 knives of the Breweries will surely present an opportunity for the most patient investors, maybe from 2030, if there is a turnaround, otherwise the Breweries would suffer the fate of what befell the construction industries in the 90s.

You know they have been battling through some heavy non-performing loans in the recent past. Could it be that CBN thinks they need to retain more of their earnings due to the impact of that on their financial health?

Omo, this work wey I give myself today. Be like e no go easy oo.

The cbn has a general guildlines for all dmb with regards to dividend payment and does not single out an individual bank for restrictions.

It's ok. What they are describing is bankers confirmation of signature (issued by your banker). This is usually requested by Registrars to confirm you and your signature.

Stockbroking firms don't require that to open account for their clients. What they require is a sample/specimen of your signature and you can submit that by snapping and uploading. Your government-issued ID surfices to identify you. Unless there's a change of processes in the last few weeks.

Thanks very much madam for the clarification. I appreciate.

They have a reason for asking. You said you are moving account from somewhere. And requirements for anything do change. If it is signature specimen they want which you get from your bank.it should not be big deal.It comes with your picture and signature certified by the bank.It means they want to confirm the identity of who they are dealing with in reference to other documents submitted or documents from the other house you are coming from.
And if I may ask why is signature specimen a big deal if the account is important to u.And identification mode has nothing to do with individual or joint account

Thanks oga. I've already gotten clarification on what to do. I appreciate the response

Last momth I filled at least 4 e dividend mandare forms and sent by email to registrars without bankers confirmation and they were treated. In this day and age of bvn and nin I don't think any registrar still requires bankers signature confirmation
They do, just recently I was asked to provide one and he/she has to go to their bank for it.

Can someone buy RI on NGX during trading hours?

Yes, you can if there are sellers. Last time I checked on the OTC there were bids at 0.34 but no sellers. Pretty sure there are investors who won't be taking up their rights but who won't bother selling either. This is either because there's not much money to be made from selling them or because they don't know how to go about it.

Please note that you are buying the RIGHT to acquire the shares of the company. You'd still need to pay for those shares at the price indicated on their prospectus.

If true, it might be a cunning way to delist (without going through the court ordered meeting shenanigans) but it's a very bad precedent for other Nigerian firms... sad

You have absolutely done the right thing .

If FBNH cannot pay a dividend of N2.00 from an EPS(earning per share) of N8.59;then probably the management presented a fraudulent financial result.
It is disappointing..... thought they have changed their ways.

Meristem, it’s for unclaimed dividends. When I confused on what they meant by bank’s confirmation of signature I emailed them back and they said I should go my bank.
