A four-story building collapsed on Lagos Island on Thursday, trapping an unknown number of people.

The incident occurred at Iga Iduganran, near the Oba of Lagos’ palace.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, has confirmed the development on his social media account.

According to Omotosho, eight people have been rescued so far

“A four-storey building has collapsed at Iga Iduganran, Lagos Island. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency officials have rescued eight people from the rubble. They are battling to retrieve two others from the rubble. The structure had been marked by LASBCA for evacuation,” Omotosho said.

This is coming less than a week after an 11-year-old girl and three persons lost their lives when a mosque that was hit by an excavator collapsed in the Papa Ajao area of Lagos State.

The agency will not go searching for debilitating structures dotted all over Lagos but will be looking for new structures on some 'acclaimed waterways' to demolish...

Reason I can never live in a multi storey building in Lagos. Quick recovery to the injured ones and we do hope no life was lost.

In Nigeria all we seem to do is pray... The major hope of the common man.. I pray they re all rescued.. and hopefully we'd learn to do right...and also punish wrong doings.. cos who approved of the structure in the first place... Local Government agencies would be going bout in states collecting revenues and won't do due diligence to Avert all this sort of tragedies..

When a society doesn't respect professionals, this is what happens.

Greedy home owners and property developers don't want to pay civil engineering professionals so they opt for cheap services from "experienced bricklayers" who know nothing about structures and manage where they're not supposed to manage...

Not again.

Lack of compliance with regulations and corruption within the sector responsible for monitoring constructions are the major reasons for all these collapse in Lagos.
Use of substandard materials, lack of compliance building standards and corruption are causing a lot of building collapses and a threat to the real estate business.
May innocent lives loss due to corruption and negligence.
Cutting costs and buying substandard materials should be a no no.

Chai! God please have mercy. Just looking at this collapsed building along gives you a chill sensation of the disaster building in Nigeria has become - cutting corners @ all levels. Thought the Ikoyi building collapse of some years ago would have driven the message home but for where?

You see the entire Lagos island should be demolished, people just erect houses there without proper planning or consideration for ventilation

Lagos island has become notorious for fire outbreak and building collapse due to poor planning and spacing
