The House of Representatives Chairman of the Downstream Petroleum Committee, Alhaji Ado Alhassan Doguwa, has said that the issue of local government autonomy in the country is of utmost priority.

Doguwa told newsmen in Kano on Saturday: “Today’s insecurities, poverty, and lack of development are all results of the malfunction of the local government areas in the country.”

Doguwa, who appeared in the regalia of a traditional chieftain, noted: “I remained the Sardauna Doguwa because, as far as I am concerned, the controversy surrounding their (Kano emirates) dissolution remains a subject of litigation. It is on record that this very House did their best in the passage of the Petroleum Bill into law, and today, as far as that sector is concerned, Nigeria is marching with its shoulders high in the comity of nations.”

Recalling that the country is better today because of several other bills that were passed into law, he said:

“Therefore, we should go the extra mile to ensure that local government autonomy is achieved. That is why I want the Speaker himself to chair the Constitutional Review Committee so that together we will do the magic.

“I’m assuring you that with local governments’ full autonomy, Nigerians would once more sleep with their eyes closed and move around everywhere without the fear of being molested or taken away.”

This is my point all along. Poverty, insecurity can be reduced by 50% with functional LGA. Issue that LG will solve with 1M naira in three days, it will take state one month and 10M to solve but federal government will need 100m and 3months to solve the same problem.

Local government autonomy is a must, Governors are not happy about the new development bcuz embezzlement will not be much.

People needs to feel governance and it's only local government autonomy can guarantee that.

But why the unnecessary noise about local government autonomy?
Local government aren't going to be controlling their resources, just that same amount alloyed to them from Abuja will henceforth be paid directly to them and no more through state government... spoon-feeding something

Growing up in the ancient town of Oyo, I witness how a counselor of a ward is busy building classroom and erecting boreholes, the LGA chairman are not left out, they constructed roads that still stands up till now. So going back to this format will help reduce hunger in the land cos these guys can easily related with the people unlike the house of assembly members and representative members. The governors should be killed for real..

It is non-negotiable truly.

They should fast track the granting of the autonomy just like the sped of light used for the national anthem.

Any Governor wey no corporate should be named and shamed.

State governors won't let it work. They are the real enemies of progress for common man and the masses at large.

I support this

Make it a national law that LGA Chairman and Councillors will be elected same day Governors, State HoA, Senate, Reps, President are elected.

President
Governor
LGA Chairman

Same day

Senate
Reps
State HoA
LGA Councillors

Same day

And LGA Chairmen will receive LGA allocations direct from federal government same day states and FG receive theirs from federation account

I hope these legislators are ready to go into war with the real owners and powers in Nigeria, the executive governors of the states.

Individuals who have worked in the presidency have been heard publicly saying that governors can control the actions of the president as a collective when it suits their collective ambitions and we've seen It with Jonathan and Buhari. It does however seem that Tinubu is a match for them because most of their cunning actions were taken from his(Tinubu) playbook.

This is a very welcome development. Funny how these people neglect the LGAs, the third their of government.

While governors have gotten their autonomy from the federal government and can do as they want, they don't want so for lgas whom is closer to the people and know how really well how the common Nigerian feels and suffers.

We will experience more development when our local governments have their full autonomies. I just wish the President Tinubu administration will do something about it urgent about it.

I'm an advocate of LG Autonomy. It will reduce the terrorist nature of our governors in no mean way. Governors are the worst politicians in the country. They only appoint loyal thugs as LG chairmen and fully control their funds.

I still repeat it that the governors are doing more harm to us and the nation at large than the president.....

The presidents (past and present) want LG autonomy but the governors have always been the hindrance. LG further brings governance down to the people irrespective of their (LG) own corruption

This is what NLC & NANS supposed to have strikes and forced governors to accept (Local Government AUTONOMY) all these years.

Local Government AUTONOMY will resolve more 50% of Nigerians problems.

If any governor makes attempt to stop it through any state assembly, Nigerians should block and deal with each of the state assembly members.

Only wicked, useless and corrupt governor / assembly members will be against this good move.

Nigeria shall be great again in the name of Jesus Christ.

Shût up with this "controlling of resources" most of u dón't know anything that's ur probIem.
Pick up a constitution and read, know the functions allocated to a LG and see if those functions are carried out the country won't develop rapidly.
Human resources are more important than whatever resources, u can have tons of resources without human resources, it's all useIess.
