Minimum wage need to increase immediately to at least help workers to survive.

This country ehn....The funny thing is even if minimum wage is increased sef, it might take more than a year for government to start paying it. That is another battle waiting ahead

Or they can just reintroduce full subsidy and reverse floating of the currency immediately while they work on that medium/long term solution.

Not forgetting that increasing minimum wage only affects a very little subset of the population like you have noted. Most state governors will not pay and even if they pay, what happens to non-civil servants.

meanwhile, one year don reach yet he never drop his assessment to the public shocked shocked
Anybody expecting Wole Soyinka to come out to lampoon Tinubu like he did Jonathan will wait in vain. Tinubu and Wole Soyinka were part of the NADECO struggle, some might even argue they're friends...most friends won't come to the public to criticize you when they have access to you personally, same thing applies with Soyinka. It's sad to see, but it's what it is, Soyinka is human...even Buhari, he didn't criticize anywhere as scathingly as he did Jonathan reason cause his buddies were part of the APC thing.

If you even see the interview Oasis posted a few days ago where Soyinka was saying he told Atiku and Tinubu not to run, a lot was implied...Soyinka is an accomplished writer and with a writer that writes like Soyinka does, if you focus too much on what he's saying, you'd miss a lot of what he's saying indirectly...while Soyinka told Atiku pointblank that he shouldn't run, with Tinubu it was pretty much a pleading suggestion which ended with Bola Tinubu said, ‘No’. He said 'there were still things he felt he could still contribute.'.

I believe at when it's all said and done, and Tinubu sinks Nigeria into lower depths than he met it, Tinubu and Soyinka would most likely sit over a drink, reflect on the whole thing and at best Soyinka would tell him...shebi I tell you make you no run.
OasisX:
'I told Atiku when he was contesting and came to see me in my Ikeja office few years ago; he came with Gbenga Daniel, my former governor (of Ogun state).

“I said to him, ‘Listen, it’s about time you people left the stage, why don’t you just go away. We need an infusion of fresh blood into the system’.

“But, for some people, maybe they read it as bloodletting. No I said infusion of fresh blood. I said so I can not support you. I think your generation should quit.

“But, he wasn’t the only one. I then sought out the current President-elect, Tinubu and I gave him exactly the same message.

“I said, ‘Whatever you people are planning, I’m convinced that we need the young generation, new thinking, new sensibilities, new energies’.

“So, why don’t you just leave the stage, let’s look for somebody, a really brilliant individual then use your entire influence to catapult that person to power, and this country will see a massive transformation.

“We spoke for about an hour and a half, and then Bola Tinubu said, ‘No’. He said there were still things he felt he could still contribute."

It is literally this same line every Apc goons are spreading on all social media platform.

The same basic rubbish.

Are hospitals supposed to be under national grid ?, or like this strike was something sudden like it couldn't be prevented ?, or you would have suggested Nepa shouldn't have joined the strike or should have joined but to leave the supply on & unattended to so they will return to blown equipments & stations. So whose fault is it ?

It in this same country under the rule of this same party that Residents doctors went on strike for 4 months in 2021 I am sure you didn't care about the people affected then, it is suddenly now that you care.

Like it is the issue, honestly Nigerian politicians will never change when we they have people like you, always present to write rubbish think pieces.

“It’s saddening that Labour could go to this extreme. But it is not surprising to the perceptive minds. Labour is harming the Nigerian people they claim to be fighting for. Today, many sick Nigerians cannot access medical care at government hospitals.

“Not even those with critical medical conditions. It appears labour is playing politics by other means. Many of the affiliates of the two central unions, NLC and TUC are members and supporters of the Labour Party.

“They logically bear ill will and grudges against the Tinubu administration. Otherwise, the issue they claim to be fighting for cannot be resolved by blackmail or sabotage, they cannot even be resolved by the Federal Government unilaterally, the Labour leaders will still have to return to the negotiating table.”

Make una hear wetin Bayo Onanuge dey talk. Instead of making statements like" We are working to ensure issues between FG and Labour are sorted out ASAP" ; he's busy making political statements .

Hear him making everything about polictics.

See ehn, if NLC had only stopped at blocking NASS and secretariat ; people like Bayo Onanuga will end up using propaganda to politicize everything noni

I really don't know what is wrong with those people. They are doing as if when labour eventually gets to negotiate something better for the works it won't affect their own members whom they claim to be speaking for.

At least of they don't have anything reasonable to contribute at this moment, they should just shut up angry

It will not solve all the problems but it will still make people lives a bit easier why labor can continue holding govt by the trouser to bring inflation down and stabilize the economy.

Workers need to at least be able to survive for now. Survival is the first thing. Everything has increased x5 but wages has stagnated, how do you want to survive in this situation?

How long will it take to bring inflation down, how long will it take to build affordable housing and the likes.
Thing is I don't think labor can really do much in driving policy decisions bordering on the economy and inflation like you're suggesting they do, and that's because their primary goal is workers welfare that gives immediate results i.e. salary increase, reduced working hours, etc. The best labor can do is what they're currently doing.

The person that can drive policy that sees to the long-term benefit of workers is the government and you'd expect that when they're formulating these policies labor would be part of those deliberations. So far Tinubu has not shown he has any long-term plans for workers in place, so the best we can expect from this strike is salary increase which the results would last no more than 3 years and for only a subset of the general population.

I detect the fact that they are always taking combative approach to issues that are of critical importance.

The government u are acting as spokesperson for has failed to come up with something reasonable as minimum wage a year after it removed subsidy hurriedly and the country started battling hyper inflation. The labour union representing the people have decided enough is enough and the next thing u are doing as a spokesperson is to start making political statements. Smh

I don't know who taught people like Onanuga that the government must always fight labour. These people don't even know they are there to serve the people and not there to lord over us. undecided

I'm not asking labor to drive any policy on inflation or anything.

If you go back to the genesis of the argument it's a video interview of a man on channels. My argument is that Labor must insist on the govt increasing minimum wage for the survival of the citizens while they can now continue to pressure the government to work to reduce inflation, provide affordable housing and all. Those are medium/long term solution.

Workers need instant solution to be able to survive which is increasing minimum wage.

They are government spokesperson now, what do you expect them to say really?

They'll try to deflect from the issue on ground, it's what they are paid for.

So the only response to issues by government spoke persons is to politicize it? Government spoke persons that are paid by public funds to serve public interests? These guys can choose to say nothing actually, or get their thoughts together before giving out statements, not every issue needs be politicized.

See ehn, there are better ways of doing the job of a government's spokesperson. It doesn't necessarily need to be about u going combative with the other party.

NLC and TUC are labour unions ; Like them or hate them, their existence is guaranteed by labor laws and u will always have to deal with them on workers welfare. There's no need to start making it seem like u are ready to spar with them in a combat.

A spokesperson to government should be telling a story that the government is trying its best to have the grievances of the workers addressed. Simple! This is not a time to be playing politics since we all agreed the government cannot afford to allow the strike to linger too long.
