Declaring emergency on agriculture won't work because of insecurity especially in the North.

Declaring an emergency on agriculture means they have to find a way to make farmers return to farm, plant and harvest.

Without that, our food inflation is just warming up.

The number one driver of our own inflation is FOOD. Workers spend 60% of their salary on food.

Currently to buy pepper and tomato na war. Yam, beans, garri and the likes are not smiling.

You'd think a reasonable government will declare an emergency on agriculture but alas even the Minister for Agriculture no even sabi wetin he dey do.

Input in the high cost of petrol and diesel which has made transportation even higher (this also contribute to the high cost of food) and you will see that our inflation is very easy to tackle if our government is sincere.

On this economy issue, Tinubu don fall my hand big time.

Actually it's so many things. Exchange rate, insecurity and lack of power being chief amongst them.

I don't know if it's even possible for any of these governments to ever fix.

You are conflating a political issue with an economic one.

Election costs millions of dollars in expenditure and alliances. Politicians must recoup. That's the unfortunate nature of the beast that there's no point arguing.

The issue here is whether trebling or quintipling minimum wage is a feasible solution to a cost of living crisis driven by inflation. There's on upper limit on the cost of goods and services, so when retailers hear that cleaners are now earing 100k, prices will go up and only find equilibrium when the purchasing power of 100k is on par with the old 30k salary...and then what happens next? Another strike?

I don't envy anybody involved because I don't think there's a solution that works for everybody on the horizon.. Nigeria is just too fückef at the current time. That's why I've been a japa proponent for a long time.

We actually discussed this earlier today and I also believe the minimum wage increment will lead to an increment in inflation in the long run.

But it appears the labour unions are all about the short run for now; and the people are with them on that this far.

Yes there’s the political aspect to this crisis and there’s the economic aspect too. The whole subsidy removal thingy , floating of Naira and increment in electricity tariffs is what led us to this point . It’s a combination of political and economic issues intertwined .

It is normal for the people not to see any sense in a n economic solution that has not addressed the lingering political problems . Something must give

Well you are right and all these are in the purview of the FG but we are not seeing any concrete plans to address these challenges so something must give.

Workers will have to survive one way or the other and the immediate solution is increase in minimum wage.

“The notice of strike was too short. It was given from the negotiation table and it was 48 hours or less. The approach of the current crop of NLC leaders is aggressive, arrogant, fascist and partisan. The body language is unmistakable. It is directed at bringing the government down. This NLC has no respect for the rule of law, not even an iota of decorum for democratic practices.

“If we cannot speak for the government, what about Nigerian Muslims whose lives your strike could turn into a sheer nightmare? Is this a deliberate attempt to make life uncomfortable for Muslims? Will NLC declare a strike one week before Christmas? Or is this about bringing down our Muslim-Muslim ticket? Is this part of the ‘religious war’ of ‘Yes Daddy’?

“This strike is ill-timed. It is a recipe for a topsy-turvy Salah. We advise NLC to postpone it till after the Salah. If NLC rejects our advice and goes ahead with its satanic strike, we will ask all Muslim workers who know that they will meet Allah yaom al-Qiyaamah (The Last Day) not to cooperate with NLC. They should reject the strike because it is an assault on the religion of Islam.

@ sod09 just imagine wetin prof. MURIC Dey yarn for mouth .

The guy doesn’t even care about Muslims whether rich or poor , he just wants to shamelessly act as a wing of the APC and that’s all.

He refused to talk about that fact that FG had a full year to meet with the labour union and come
Up with a reasonable revised minimum wage o; he just wants to delve into politics at all cost .

Beyond affordability, Interestingly, most people do not realize that the minimum wage affects all and not just the government.

People with drivers, maids or any form of employ under you must earn at least that minimum.

Are they willing to comply? or will they do what is and has long been predicted by neoclassical economics - which is to let go of the employee.

If the government and private sector simply were to follow the same logic - productivity/value must be in tandem with revenue - Good luck to the unemployment rate. Guess who would mostly be impacted - the very vulnerable people

Everything is politics to people, meanwhile, it is your life and earnings/affordability that is at stake here. Parroting crap and looking for corn in people's pocket without a fundamental understanding of your economy will probably solve it for you

When he removed the fuel subsidy, floated the naira, increased electricity tariff all at once forming jagaban, did he care about the unemployment rate and its impact on vulnerable people....where did he expect them to see money to afford this new cost of living and reality

E reach to give back to the people so they can adjust to the inflation he caused with his policies, you turn economist guru,Pele ooo Karl marx

This is a good one. We have been talking about this for years. If most Nigerians didn't believe in a god that that would specially answer their individual prayers, they would have cleared those politicians' doubts long time ago.

This argument doesn't make sense though, if you want to earn nass member salary, resign from work and go join politics and see how easy it is to become a Nass member.

This doesn't change the fact that our NASS salary and allowances is outrageous.

Then you are saying it makes sense.

They were not saying everybody should earn NASS salary. Their point was that NASS member income increased by 155 over the years while minimum wage increased by 10 in the same period.

That argument would've made sense. Instead they were showing the entire NASS budget which includes their capital expenditure.

....Workers deserve increment no doubt but not that outrageous amount Labour Union is quoting. ₦70k is ok, then pressure should be on FG to reduce Inflation drastically.

Temporary measure should be opening of borders until we are ready to plant what we eat.

An unrealistic increase in minimum wage will lead to even more inflation and the real value of the increased income will be eliminated, however the government should not have to be forced to find ways to reduce the inflation in the country.

This minimum wage issue is not wholly on the current government but is something that has been brewing for years. Politicians kept feeding fat and increasing their own income while pegging down those of the common man. One day monkey go go market but e no go return. We keep getting closer to that day.

We've been facing a cost of living crisis here for the last 3 years. What the UK government did would be considered suicidal in Nigeria, but they created an environment to remove money from circulation and stick to reducing inflation no matter the cost.

The consequences have been profound. Job markets have been decimated. Record number of companies have gone insolvent. Hundreds of thousands if not in the millions have been laid off. Entire councils (like states) announced bankruptcy. Birmingham City Council (the 2nd biggest in the country) went bust trying to implement equal pay between male and female staff

The cure for inflation is incredibly bitter. If Tinubu even dared to think about it, he would probably be shot on sight.

Cos both countries are quite different. A lot of those people that lost their jobs in the UK still have access to a level of free quality healthcare and welfare benefits that is unattainable to the average Nigerian.

You now add the emotional torture of seeing the politicians that put you in this nasty position all driving around in their customized luxury cars and building mansions with their ill-gotten wealth.

The day Nigerians check the country's expiry date and realize the country expired a long time ago, that is the day the leaders will feel the pain.
