cococandy: I agree. It's not even the religious aspect that's my issue, I know they can have the surgery w/o a transfusion. I know how terrible the system is, it's fvcked up how she wasn't even monitored and how they couldn't even do CPR for the baby. If I was to deliver in Nigeria, I would opt for a CS rather than a normal delivery. At least with a CS, the experts are present w/ you from the start. It's seems w/ normal delivery, they just leave you to your devices. Its sad. I can see where he agreed to the surgery, but it doesn't seem like he was fully open to it. Why then was she made to deliver naturally? Whose decision was it truly? I know Nigerians have phobias around surgeries. Women that have CS are shamed for not doing like "the Hebrew women" and that's the part that annoys me. |

1Sharon: @bold that’s so true for most Nigerians but if I were to guess, I don’t think he’s biased against c section seeing as he’s a medical professional himself. Just a messed up situation all around. And they wonder why people are quitting and running away. Not even the proper rescue equipment and personelle was readily available 1 Like |

g4everybody: So trained nurses can’t be religious? Tell me more. Should I stop going to church then? 🙄 Nothing in his posts suggests that an imminent blood transfusion could have saved his wife and he refused. Everything that led to her death was due to mismanagement of the woman’s case by the hospital staff. Does he deserve it simply because he’s a religious person? When his religious beliefs did not interfere at any point? Tell me at what point his beliefs stopped them from doing what they should have done to save her. I’m going to need some of you to remove your bias goggles and look at what actually happened instead of assuming what you think could have happened based on his beliefs. If this hospital is so awesome, why weren’t they adequately monitoring this patient? 2 Likes 1 Share |

seborrhic:my wife gave birth through CS. And it was the major requirement. Once I provided it, my wife was wheeled into the theatre immediately. And it was in one of the best hospitals in abuja. Whether they use the blood or not is another is another issue, but it has to be there in case they need it. But those jehovah witness people, once u mention blood, they say mba. Sheh they don't marry non witness, so why do they allow non witness to deliver bloodless children for them? 4 Likes |

thatigboman: Okay but that’s not the case here though is it? Are you able to dissect your own bias now appropriately? I’m asking you again. At what point did the hospital provide appropriate care to the wife and all that was left to save her was a blood transfusion which he then refused? Did that happen? No. Since it didn’t happen, you’re simply saying just because he doesn’t believe in blood transfusions he deserved the death of his wife even though she died from mismanagement and not a lack of transfusion when needed. 2 Likes 1 Share |

And to think I wanted to pick a job at the same hospital as a Senior Medical Officer around this time last year. I'll have been working together with my friend Marcus Mbakwe. We read together side by side in medical school days. So sad this is happening to him. I really pray God sees him through, cos Marcus Mbakwe is a wizard! What killed this mother and child is clearly a case of medical negligence. Whether CS or vagina birth if not properly handled can lead to mortality of mother or child. May Nigeria not happen to us! 1 Like |

Well I’m sorry for the guy who lost his wife as well Being a CRNA also requires high level of intelligence similar to what a doctor is expected to have. At the end of the day, neither of them is being spared right now on account of being intelligent. I wish your doctor friend good luck and hope this was a big learning experience for him. There are things we call NEVER events in the medical system here and one of them is that you never put a patient on a medication that can have devastating consequences and leave them unmonitored. Pitocin is no joke. To infuse it into a patient by gravity without a pump to measure the amount being given or a monitor to see how it’s affecting the baby and the strength of uterine contractions in the mom is unconscionable. He broke a cardinal rule by doing that. Maybe it’s the norm for doctors that work in that hospital system to shuffle between hospitals when on the clock, but they need to put their foot down and say enough is enough. Safe staffing saves lives. You people need to advocate harder for yourselves, your patients and your licenses. Now they’re going to throw him under the bus and hang him out to dry. mediclife1987: 4 Likes |

Lagusta: Lagusta my man, longest time, I think the hospital had the option of referral to another facility at antenatal booking when they (the hospital) knew about their client'' religious inclinination but they chose to take full responsibility. Haven taken full responsibility one would have expected them to be more proactive and have early recourse to prompt intervention, especially when they had such a client in labour. With respect to the ultrasound foetal weight estimation of 3.9kg, it may not be a straight forward case to rush for emergency caesarwan section, more so because we were not told the birth weight of the first child. Even though we are more inclined towards safe obstetric practices, some people will still go ahead and induce a 3.9kg foetus especially if the woman had delivered 3.9kg or more in the past. Every pregnancy should however, be treated differently Reporting the case to MDCN is good but he should be ready to prove there was negligence and that such negligence resulted to the harm done to him and his family. A woman is not supposed to lose her life while giving life to another being, it is even more heart breaking to lose both mother and baby at same time. So sad 5 Likes |

seborrhic: Would you have your daughter or wife go in for a CS in a hospital that has no blood made readily available in case of complications? Or you think making preparations for blood transfusion services readily available is not one of the necessary routines prior to a surgical procedure? Na una dey kill pxs for this country. 3 Likes |

cococandy: And this is what we go on strike for regularly, however to the ire of Nigerians as you know the only language government understands is strike. Who will fight for this case in a private hospital? I thank God I stuck to the government hospital I was working in. mediclife1987: When doctors go on strike (which I’ve heard of a few times), what are your talking points in the negotiation besides pay and benefits? Do you fight for employment of new doctors so that more staffing is available when needed? I can’t tell you the amount of times someone in Nigeria has told me they went to the hospital and there was no doctor. They had to wait for one to come from somewhere. Or if there was one, he or she was usually so busy that they don’t get to see them soon enough. If you guys don’t already, you really should add it to your negotiation plan. Ask for more colleagues. Nigeria trains a lot of doctors yearly. At least put them to good use before they japa 1 Like |

In that case private hospitals have to be bound by similar standards as the ones for public hospitals. (if there’s a good standard in the public hospitals) A certain number of doctors required for a certain number of patients. If a private hospital is found to be in violation, they are fined or even temporarily suspended from operating until they resolve their issue. That’s exactly what will make them sit up That’s why I said it’s a system issue not the Jehovah witness guy’s fault for his belief. The whole system needs a reboot. mediclife1987: 2 Likes |

cococandy: Well you've chosen to listen to the deafening noise of irate Nigerians whenever we go on strike. While pay is a part of our demands, adequate staffing and infrastructural overhaul tops the lists of our demands, as he who would demand a better pay must prove to his boss he deserves it, which can only be gotten when he has good tools and more colleagues to work and rub minds with. Unfortunately Nigerians and the Nigerian government would gaslight you till you turn around and blame the doctors and you'll eventually wonder why your friend goes to the hospital and sees no doctor. Doctors are tired of fighting cause no one would listen to them. Na to hustle and japa remain now, whoever wants to be Captain save Nigeria like poor Dr. Marcus can stay behind. This should make me increase the tempo for my japa plans sef. God has been saving me from stuffs like this since 2011, I shouldn't be testing God too much, cos that's what staying back in Nigeria looks like. 2 Likes |

cococandy: You're requesting for all these things in this same Nigeria? Are you sure you lived in Nigeria at all, or you lived here by proxy? It's hard enough doing business in Nigeria which is why most foreign companies despite their hard currencies are still folding up. Private hospitals can only manage with what they have, and one of the training a Nigerian doctor receives in medical school is how to work in resource constrained settings, making do with meagre resources. Your request is only likely to materialize in the next century perhaps. |
