BREAKING: N60,000 Minimum Wage Too High – Governors by Antoeni(m): 5:05pm On Jun 07 |
Governors of the 36 states of the federation have rejected the N60,000 minimum wage earlier proposed by the Federal Government. The Director Media and Public Affairs of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Hajiya Halimah Salihu Ahmed, disclosed this in a statement on Friday. Recall that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had on Monday embarked on indefinite strike action after rejecting the federal government’s N60, 000 offer as minimum wage. But they later announced that they would relax the strike action for one week to give room for further negotiations with the federal government, which had promised to increase the wage from N60,000. “However, the Forum urges all parties to consider the fact that the minimum wage negotiations also involve consequential adjustments across all cadres, including pensioners. “The NGF cautions parties in this important discussion to look beyond just signing a document for the sake of it; any agreement to be signed should be sustainable and realistic. “All things considered, the NGF holds that the N60,000 minimum wage proposal is not sustainable and can not fly. It will simply mean that many states will spend all their FAAC allocations on just paying salaries with nothing left for development purposes. “In fact, a few states will end up borrowing to pay workers every month. We do not think this will be in the collective interest of the country, including workers. “We appeal that all parties involved, especially the labour unions, consider all the socioeconomic variables and settle for an agreement that is sustainable, durable, and fair to all other segments of the society who have legitimate claim to public resources.” https://dailytrust.com/breaking-n60000-minimum-wage-too-high-governors/

If They Have Siblings & Children In The Service, Will They Say That N60,000 Is Too High? Can They Swear With Everything Precious To Them That N60,000 Is What Their Children Spend Daily? Why Are Some Nigerian Leaders Heartless & Unfair To The Masses Like This? 1 Like |

Govt love to keep idle hands on payroll and waste money so it will be hard for the general workers union to understand this explanation. N21B on VP residence. N90B on federal level hajj alone. Cars and jeeps for reps at federal level. How do you expect a worker on less than N100k to understand there is no money? 2 Likes |

Run a lean government, cut down waste and ghost workers. Intentionally improve governance systems and process and make it more efficient then step on toes and stop servicing useless state/national cartels (what many people call god-fathers). You will see that you will free up so much resources and focus on critical things. Even western countries do this. The NHS UK has cut down waste and now working under strict budget for critical things like quality and safe patient care and any frivolous things that does add to this core objectives, they cut it off. Oil is supposed to be a blessing to us but now seems as though it’s a curse. Make una go learn from Edo state governor Obaseki. Governance is not a rocket science just that most of una too dull no critical thinking. 1 Like |

That's the truth. Though I think 60k is reasonable, but even such an increase would cause shocks in the system, particularly the private sector and even many state governments would resort to retrenching workers and such people would then be regretting why the increase was made in the first place. NLC only fights for federal workers.Has NLC ever caused the enforcement of even the 30k most states were not paying? No! But why this maybe difficult to swallow for workers affected is that the governors, nass members, appointees of government are all living large. If for example the president, governors,NASS members and appointees of government were living frugally, people would understand. 2 Likes |

Finally, the governors have spoken. I for one know that my State of Osun can not afford to pay 60k a month minimum wage since we barely manage 30k a month. But that just means we should develop more, which requires us to elect better leaders and that's not happening any time soon unless we sack some. 1 Like |

The problem is that the politicians are not demonstrating empathy and understanding. The culture of long convoys, grandeur, splendour, opulence, wastefulness, and squandamania persists across all levels of government. Yet you want Labour and the Nigerian workers/masses to 'understand' that there is no money. The animal farm optics of hypocritical disconnection and disequilibrium only serves to breed discontent. And it will reach boiling point We have a problem in this country that only evenly distributed anarchy of unprecedented proportions can help resolve. Some of these creatures need to be rudely forced down their pseudo high horses and made to taste some jungle love. 1 Like |

Yes, it is too high. Infact, it is outrageously high. These are the same set of people that collected COVID-19 relief from the federal government in December 2023 (according to Femi Falana SAN). When Nigerians are ready, we will take back our country. The problem is clearly before us all |

I knew this matter is going to come to this outcome.I can't imagine a state like Kaduna being able to pay a minimum wage of 60k and above with the humongous foreign debt it's grappling with it.I also know that Abia state is currently not paying #30k minimum wage, and i don't imagine that state being able to pay #60k and above. Personally,I think the best approach is for labour to mobilize Nigerians(I will eagerly join),for sustained demonstrations and protests to force the govt fix our current fx exchange challenge. Our biggest problem in Nigeria today is not minimum wage its the nosediving naira.Any exchange rate of more than #800 is a disaster for Nigeria and no value of minimum wage can compensate for it.Even removal of fuel subsidy is turning into a total failure because of exchange rate. 1 Like |
