The President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has ruled out strike action tomorrow, Tuesday, to press for a new national minimum wage.

Ajaero disclosed this today, Monday, at the ongoing International Labour Conference (ILC) organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

He clarified that the submission of N62,000 as proposed by the government and the organized employers’ body with labour proposing N250,000 does not translate to labour accepting N62,000 as the new minimum wage.

He said: “The tripartite committee submitted two figures to the President. Government and employers proposed N62,000 while labour proposed N250,000. We are waiting for the decision of the President. Our National Executive Council (NEC) will deliberate on the new figure when it is out.”

On the expiration of the one-week ‘relaxation’ of the suspended strike that is expected to resume on Tuesday, Ajaero said: “We cannot declare strike now because the figures are with the President. We will wait for the President’s decision.

“During the tenure of the immediate past President, the figure that was proposed to him was N27,000 by the tripartite committee but he increased it to N30,000. We are hopeful that this President will do the right thing. The President had noted that the difference between N62,000 and N250,000 is a wide gulf.”

The NLC helmsman also berated the governor of the 36 states under the umbrella body of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum for rejecting the N62,000 saying, “How can any governor say he cannot pay? They cannot also be calling for the decentralization of the minimum wage.

“Are there wages decentralized? Governors whose states are not contributing a dime to the national purse and who generate pitiable Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) are collecting the same amount as governors whose states are generating billions of dollars into the FAAC.

“They should decentralize their salaries and emoluments first. So, where is the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki getting his money from? He is paying N70,000 minimum wage. This is the type of governor that should be emulated and not the lazy ones.”

And you think Joe Ajaero doesn't have a letter headed NLC document he can sign to communicate this as the position of the organized Labour?

This smells like government propaganda.

Fa fa fa foul!!

Over the bar

Ajaero don l'ana

It is obvious that NLC has lost a lot of its ability to bite. They are now playing squash with the govt with the "offers" as the ball. This is what petty politics is doing to Nigeria. Every aspect of our governance and social activism has been eroded. The politicians are having the time of their lives!!

NLC should up their minimum wage to 700k.

Then strike for 3 years so that Obi can be elected as president in 2027.

That is the reasoning of the headless mob.

No state in Nigeria can pay even 100k minimum wage, I even doubt the FG can pay that amount. When all of you finish your theatrics, you will start being serious.

In 2023 for example, Oyo state wage bill was 7.2bn monthly. Let’s say they increase from 30k to 100k, it means the wage bill will roughly shoot up to 16bn for example. It’s not going to increase 3 fold like that due to the calculation being used.

For Feb 2024, Oyo received 10bn net allocation from FAAC. So that means the 16bn wage bill will be up to 50% more than their monthly FAAC.

And I am even being generous with the 16bn wage bill.

They should reduce the sycophants on their pay roll. You cannot drag the country back because you want to keep hangers on around government jobs.

What Peter Obi was preaching was a public service that makes profit for the government, not a workforce that is being sustained on the mercies of the government.

Don’t bring Peter Obi here. When he was governor, he can’t even pay the minimum wage then because the clownn is too broke to think outside the box.

He had to threaten sack of workers and even removed non indigent from their payroll and he still can’t pay it easily.

You guys forget he was once a governor. A useless one at that.

Don't just be swallowing stories online. How can Oyo state wage bill be 7.2bn monthly? That's a lie. Same Makinde once claimed wage bill was 11bn.

So what is the wage bill? Since the governor said it’s 7.2bn, how much do you think it is?

Even in 2019 when Makinde just got sworn in, he claimed the wage bill was 5.2bn.

So why can’t it move to 7.2 in 2023?

The Governor, who made the disclosure during an interactive session with workers in the employ of the state government, held at the state secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, said that the development shot up the wage bill to about N5.2 billion from March 10.

This is exactly why politicians take us for granted. Promise eldorado while in reality, they can’t get things going because real life is different from fantasy.

Is it Zamfara that is still struggling with 18k minimum wage to their workers that will pay 100k? Some governors even borrow loans to pay salaries, shey na those go pay 100k?

When you’re all done whyning yourself, you will wake up to reality.

My brother, that you support a government with people of low intelligence and capacity doesn't men you will support for Nigeria to suffer because your chosen leaders cannot see beyond their short noses. Your government should shape up or get out, Nigeria is not an IDP camp.

We need a president with capacity and vision.

Yes, you’re correct. I know food is damn expensive.

But how does increasing minimum wage to 100k for less than 10% of the population bring food price down or allow the remaining 90% to afford the food?

What economic theory are you using?

It is more easier to invest massively in food production, allow imports in the interim, subsidize food import until we can get it right, declare state of emergency in agriculture and bring the price down by increasing output.

Those are more better for everyone in the long run than 100k minimum wage for less then 10% of the population.
