Festac Town has lost its glory. Bad roads and shops everywhere. Almost all ground floor of block of flats have been converted to business centres. Duplexes are not left out in the madness. The last time Festac Town had a good serenity of environment was in the early 2000s.

I miss the town though cos I was born and bred there.

The failure of the government to enforce housing laws has allowed the residential complexes to become a local marketplace.

Festac was beautiful then.A well planned town with good roads and drainages in the 80s.i trekked that town tire going to school from 21 Road to 24 Road on a daily.I still cherish those childhood memories.

The last time I visited Festac in 2015,I wept.

It's an experience am sharing. Have been a resident of festac for a very long time and had to witness how this beautiful place got transformed to an eyesore overtime especially by this same set of people.

You are being sentimental about it and trying to dismiss the truth.

Yes you’re being a tribal bigot if the only people you ever see doing something unwholesome are Igbo people

Lie to yourself and your bigotry not me

Festac was like a one big family then.
Teary moments as I think back..... During the holidays we all came downstairs with tiny raps of any swallow, newspapers, and stolen sticks of hard brooms (gotten from the meter corner.)
We all made kites that were flew into the sky with cloth-thread.... On how many occasions have we ran after kites cut-off from our control tower while the kite was way up in the air cheesy....

FESTAC is now a mega slum. I remember it in 1984. Parks and lots of green areas

I live on 23 Road and the bungalows then were unfenced. Beautiful rows of bungalows...today they've all been fenced, all the parks are gone. In R close at the round about, there was open areas, today, mansions sit in those fields.

Football fields names after famous stadiums all gone; replaced by houses.

Moved to 21 Road I close and we had a big field opposite our block before Makay Plaza was built there and the First Tantalizer opened.

It is now a shithole

Makay, 21 road is where you can find me in those days

The building looks old because it has not being painted for a long time. Tribal non sense is for what exactly? I saw a post from someone saying festac has a bad drainage system like can you imagine. We complain and overlook human factors encroachment on land meant water most people buy lands without taking build instructions.

You see the painting aspect, I remember back then that the residence of each block are the ones that contributed to paint like every December in 101, B close

Only Banks, Nipost and Shoprite Mall are the only valuable things at festac now

The problems of Festac are many.

The design involved centralised services which created single points of failure. Great in other places but not NG.

Indiscriminate flouting of the master plan. All sorts of buildings sprouting up

Lack of community ownership - look at those flats.

Festac is the metaphor what happens when people are free to do what they like. A cautionary tale for all those who believe in freedom over law.

I can tell you that if festac falls into state hands, there will be gnashing of teeth but long term recovery. Otherwise let Festac fall into the hands of a Wike or Tokunbo Wahab type person.

Personal happiness ends where it brings discomfort to my neighbour.

It's not about being predominantly igbo, it's about it being populated by a sample set of reckless Nigerians. Even if another tribe was there, I doubt there would any difference.

Festac inhabitants have not done well at all.

best comment on this thread so far. You can't discount the influx of the Igbos anyway. They just bought illegally from FHA and lawlessness started creeping into the facets of the once beautiful town, before we knew it, Agberos opened their base on 23 Road and gradually the decay became unstoppable. A one-bedroom flat on 22 Road would have 10 occupants living there and the crime rate would increase. At the end of the day, the original occupants let it rot. I heard some block of flats had working phone after it was allocated and water board was ran efficiently. When people try to circumvent the system, Festac Village is what you get.

Festac used to be multicultural. Guess the people that live in festac nowadays after they hijacked it.
The tribe starts with an I and ends with O. They invaded the town and messed it up.

Before and after below 👇

Everything shouldn’t be about tribalism. FESTAC was built as an average income district, with lots of blocks of flats. It was never intended to be like Ikoyi, VI or Lekki. Its location is also at the fringes/suburbs close to poor neighborhoods. Yet, these pictures you posted or even worse ones are also common to places like Ikeja. It has nothing to do with the tribe. I don’t think Yorubas or Hausas would have created a better ambience if they’re the ones that dominate FESTAC, giving the factors I narrated earlier.

Purge yourself of hate.

ANYBODY CRITICISNG THE EFFORT OF THE POOR IS A VAMPIRE, JUDGING THAT THE PENALTY FOR STEALING IS MOB BURNING.

SECONDLY, THE GOVERNMENT DONT HAVE MONEY TO BUILD, THE PEOPLE HAVE BUILT AFTER GOING TO THE SAME FEDERAL GOV FOR APPROVAL.

NOW, TO COME BACK AND DESTROY THE PEOPLE EFFORT TO KEEP LIFE GOING, WILL BE NOTHING SHORT OF GOVERNMENT RASCALITY.

RESPET THE EFFORT OF THE PEOPLE AND STOP USING STATE MONEY OF THE PEOPLE TO DESTROY STRUCTURES DULY ERECTED BY THE PEOPLE PRIVATE MONEY.

GOVERNMENT IS NOT FOREVER, WHEN WE GO CALL U TO ANSWER DEY COME.

Festac was not built with private money. It was built with 100% public funds. It was private money that came to dislocate the master plan.

This is what comes from history not been taught in schools.

You've actually hit on a key point. Not sure if you realize it.

The absence of common space - sold and bought illegally - destroyed the sense of community and ownership. Common areas foster kinship and belonging. They either get shrunk to meaningless sizes or obliterated.

Anyone trying to restore that master plan will ne cursed and hated. The people who stole from the people will be celebrated for their "sweat" and "labour"

No one worships oppression more than Nigerians.

And finally of course there is the religious and tribal card. As if the persons luxury house doubles as a religious or community centre. Nigeria!!

That is always the first step on the road to destruction.

The person you quoted is actually right, though you might not want to admit it. The few times I visit Lagos, I discovered I met more of Yoruba people when I went to the low-income areas with cheaper rent like Orile and MazaMaza. I met more Igbos around Ago Palace Way . This is just an honest observation
So you don't know that those places you are mentioning are where the indigens stays, more like their "villages" dating back to hundreds of years, including Lagos Island.
Moreover this post is not even about low or high income it is about keeping your environment clean. Majority of the people living in Festac are Igbos ( mind you they bought most of the houses from people) but look at the environmental damage they have done to the place.

Festac Police seem to be getting worse, by the year. My last experience with them was more than 8 years since i left Festac. That one idiot who saw me with calculator and exam slip wanted to put me inside Korope that I looked like a yahoo boy lol. Bloody Nincompoop! grin

The whole Festac Police station has to be overhauled. Cuz there are two possible situations: (1) Their Boss is a terrible human being and his filth is running down the ladder (2) They have a good boss but the officers underneath him are too corrupt, in this case its just a matter of time before their boss is converted or disposed off somehow.

River used to travel to Benin near Festac? I am not sure. The only body of water around Festac that i know is the canal bridge near 1st gate and the at the back of 4th avenue.
