Nigerians have turn to what the world will go to great lengths to reject. When ur country doesn't value u then forget to be valued in another country. Simple as that

My God, this is one of the worst nightmares anyone can ever experience. I don’t even want to imagine what the students and their family will be feeling. They must have sold assets worth tens of millions and liquidated things back in Nigeria only to be ordered to return home empty handed. Return to a Nigeria that is in deep crisis

I pray they find a way to sort things out, but for those that campaigned and supported Tinubu, despite knowing he wasn’t the best for Nigeria, may they return and enjoy his government.

So, it is right and proper for Nigerians to donate all their foreign exchange earnings to UK of all places. Can't we just think outside the box ? UK has cashed out big time on Nigeria in the last few years on this education tourism and they are not in anyway ready to bear any responsibility. That is the true position.

It is time the Nigerian government places a 10year embargo on the siphoning of Nigerian earn funds to sustain academic infrastructures in UK, US, Canada, and any other country Nigerians are going to for education tourism.

Only a foolish country allow people to ship off funds earned in that economy to benefit another economy, without paying any tax to the economy where the funds was earned.

They will sell property in Nigeria and pocket all the money to go donate to another economy, yet no tax is paid on the sale of that property to the economy where the wealth was acquired.

Imagine all the best income earners in Nigeria spending the bulk of their Nigerian earnings on the undergraduate education of their children or their own postgraduate education abroad, after the heavily subsidized undergraduate education that Nigeria provided them to secure those jobs in Nigeria that funded their ambitjon to wear winter jackets in Europe and North America?

Any country that does not understand the intricacies of economic national security, will keep wondering why its economy continue to flounder.

Even the countries receiving Nigerian funds know how to prioritize their own national economic security, and make policy changes from time to time to ensure that the academic tourists remain only a source of net foreign remittance into their own economy instead of a net subtractive parasite.

I will say it again, the prevailing time is not one to allow your best income earners take funds out of the Nigerian economy without as much as a 50kobo tax on their destructive drain of our national wealth.

Yea, na una normal format...blame the people and not the politicians for the mismanagement of Nigeria's economy. By the way, is it your property or your money. People can spend their money they way they please so long as it's legal. And why would expect people to pay taxes when the government doesn't provide anything to them. Does Nigeria have a social security net for its citizens? What exactly does an average Nigerian benefit from the government. People in government misuse our common patrimony and you still want us to continue to fund their excesses. In many parts of Nigeria, the people provide their own water , electricity and even build their own roads. And yet, you and your kind expect them to pay taxes.

I honestly don't know what you are driving at. The word "japa" was not common in Nigeria until APC came into power. Address the root cause of the problem and leave the people alone to fend for themselves. You don't know what it means to be "stranded" in Nigeria, where all odds seem against you. Traveling to the UK has afforded new opportunities and better living to many Nigerians.

I always laugh at Nigerians like you who think education and every service must be free and there should be no tax on just about everything.

But you will sell your inheritance to go pay tax in the country where you have to save years ahead to afford the tuition that Nigeria provided you at the cost of a month's purchase of Shawarma.

I swear, Nigeria too take rubbish.

A property owner will earn income from rents and will not pay tax on that income. A property owner will sell off the property and pocket all the income without any tax going to the government.

Which economically viable country would allow such leakages?

Anyone that wants to go abroad for education should find a way to get a job in that country and raise the funds from the income earned in that country.

CBN should with immediate effect prohibit any transfers from a Nigerian account to any foreign academic institution for a period of 10years, while the government should simultaneously raise the school fees to something tangible that you save for years ahead, instead of the rubbish fees that is not up to the pocket money the students spend in a month.

Or is UK or Canada or US tuition fees for local student the kind of amount that local student will spend on buying burgers in a month?

So why are Nigerian universities charging money for 1month shawarma as annual tuition fees?

Charge well, pay lecturers well, and still have enough to upgrade and maintain the education infrastructure in Nigeria.

Goddammit!

What about the government officials who earn in millions every month, and those ones who embezzle public funds and go to stash the money in foreign accounts. When will they be banned from shipping our money abroad after fraudulently earning them here in Nigeria.

If the funds Nigerians pour into UK education is poured into Nigerian education, we would be the education gaint of Africa with the best infrastructures and faculty remuneration.

We never even mention funds going to US or Canada.

We are bleeding and the government remain as irresponsible as the suffering masses who can raise millions of Naira just to live abroad.

Address the root cause of the problem first before you start taxing the people. In many climes, using Canada for instance, in many of their provinces, basic healthcare and education are free. In such a place, paying taxes is justifiable. During the COVID era, many of these governments provided aids to their people. How many Nigerians received aid from the government during that period? Fix Nigeria first, from the top...

The UK educational system exploits international students. International students are the ones indirectly funding the education of UK citizens.

I will pay 30,000 pounds for a one year masters program in the UK when I am not mad? Nigerians that go to the UK to study are really trying.

Would the go to UK if Nigeria is working? It was in the last few years that I start hearing the word "japa"...all because we elected the wrong people as leaders, who wrecked our economy.

Masters that they will not give you job after acquiring it. That £30k can be multiplied 10x in this same Nigeria without stepping into the airport, but they all want to snap pictures inside snow with oyinbo in the background.

I think that we should look at the bigger picture. For example, a business person invests some money in order to make bigger and longlasting gains. The foreign exchange Nigerians export to other countries in form of school fees is no where near foreign remittances back home from these same people when they are settled-in in their new countries. Billions of foreign currencies are remitted back home yearly by the abroad folks, Nigeria would have been poorer without this.

Looking at it holistically, it doesn't make any sense to apply to study abroad without considering the financial implications or thinking getting there, you will be able to work to pay fees. People believe the moment they set their foot on foreign soil, there's work waiting for them to do. Three months in a semester might look like a lot of time in a Nigerian university, but abroad, it moves like clock work. And you pay fees every semester. I know because I have been there.
