It is time the Nigerian government places a 10year embargo on the siphoning of Nigerian earned funds to sustain academic infrastructures in UK, US, Canada, and any other country Nigerians are going to for education tourism.

Only a foolish country allow people to ship off funds earned in that economy to benefit another economy, without paying any tax to the economy where the funds was earned.

They will sell property in Nigeria and pocket all the money to go donate to another economy, yet no tax is paid on the sale of that property to the economy where the wealth was acquired.

Imagine all the best income earners in Nigeria spending the bulk of their Nigerian earnings on the undergraduate education of their children or their own postgraduate education abroad, after the heavily subsidized undergraduate education that Nigeria provided them to secure those jobs in Nigeria that funded their ambition to wear winter jackets in Europe and North America?

Any country that does not understand the intricacies of economic national security, will keep wondering why its economy continue to flounder.

Even the countries receiving Nigerian funds know how to prioritize their own national economic security, and make policy changes from time to time to ensure that the academic tourists remain only a source of net foreign remittance into their own economy instead of a net subtractive parasite.

I will say it again, the prevailing time is not one to allow your best income earners take funds out of the Nigerian economy without as much as a 50kobo tax on their destructive drain of our national wealth.

Anyone that wants to go abroad for education should find a way to get a job in that country and raise the funds from the income earned in that country.

CBN should with immediate effect prohibit any transfers from a Nigerian account to any foreign academic institution for a period of 10years, while the government should simultaneously raise the school fees to something tangible that you save for years ahead, instead of the rubbish fees that is not up to the pocket money the students spend in a month.

Or is UK or Canada or US tuition fees for local student the kind of amount that local student will spend on buying burgers in a month?

So why are Nigerian universities charging money for 1month shawarma as annual tuition fees?

Charge well, pay lecturers well, and still have enough to upgrade and maintain the education infrastructure in Nigeria.

Goddammit!
Who is this one? You are asking the government to regulate how people spend their personal monies?
What exactly are you smoking.

Come back home, we get university here.

With all the ASUU strikes? It's been like that for ages. That's why those that can afford it send their kids to school abroad so they can graduate on time.

I think some people are too blind to reality though, and that's why some of the poor sell their properties in Nigeria to go to school abroad and end up regretting.

International Yahoo Yahoo, they don't want people especially foreigners in their country imagine after collecting all their money they are offering flight to them even with the intervention of federal government. This people are ripping Africans, using their school as attraction tool. Even those that paid 90% were shown the way out. Now instead of Nigeria leaders to sit up and build the nation to standard they are busy debating over national anthem and greedily dragging the minimum wage.

Those in power are aware of the points you raised. I think the current world system allows this despicable design to always keep the west ahead of Africa.

I loved your write-up until you mentioned that the school fees in Nigerian universities be increased and then I cursed at you.

How much are the minimum wages in those countries you mentioned and how much is it here? Can you compare the standard of living over there to what we have here? How are the people in Nigeria expected to pay the fees without corresponding increase in living wages or you want to create another issue of mass illiteracy where by people can't afford education a necessity? Please countries subsidize education for their citizens and make foreigners pay through their nostrils.
When the school fees is high they make sure that the citizens have good paying jobs that can enable them fund it and still have a take home.

So, please you made sense until your last 2 paragraphs or so which I highly disagree with.

We can not operate a foreign system in a country with a very bad economy as we have.
Policies must be made according to the standard of a country's economy. Meaning we never reach to practice such until we look for ways to improve our economy and the people's lots. Your suggestion will further impoverish the masses.

I am sure the minister of power has this same mindset as urs and it is flawed badly hence he introduced the band system.

Thanks!

I find it very disturbing that people will go to the UK and depend on people in Nigeria to pay their schoolfees after they made the first semester payment.

It seems UK government policy also added to this. In USA, if you can’t pay schoolfees, there are some schools that will still allow you to progress just that they’ll not release your transcript/diploma after you graduate.

Also it’s more easier to get jobs UDT to offset some of the bills.

By the way, of all Nigerians student schooling abroad in Canada, USA, Finland, Australia, and etc. Why is it that it is only UK people that can’t pay school fees and facing deportation?
The UK is a bad country to immigrate to you'll end up struggling to make ends meet.

Looking at it holistically, it doesn't make any sense to apply to study abroad without considering the financial implications or thinking getting there, you will be able to work to pay fees. People believe the moment they set their foot on foreign soil, there's work waiting for them to do. Three months in a semester might look like a lot of time in a Nigerian university, but abroad, it moves like clock work. And you pay fees every semester. I know because I have been there.

Don't blame the people here.
Have you heard of this before?
Rather, blame your government.
If the government didn't fck up, why did they intervene in some of the cases?

I have read all the intriguing comments, and it is such a delightful thread. In my opinion, the primary challenge stems from why most people leave. Many who travel to the UK are more interested in relocation than education. Traditionally, studying abroad has been the domain of wealthy families. However, for those facing financial difficulties, it may be wiser to invest their resources to generate more income. I know many well-off Nigerians who left Nigeria because their friends or families did, primarily to post appealing pictures and make others back home feel inferior. Since not everyone can move to the UK, it's better for people to explore other options to make money instead of going to countries that don't value them.

You cannot restrict Nigerians from spending millions of Naira abroad on foreign education, then you want them to keep the money back in their bank and spend shawarma money as tuituon fees in Nigeria.

That UK charges its own citizens £9000 for annual university tuition, does not mean that money is money spent on fish and chips.

That is real money that could factor in at about 2 or 3 or 4 months salary of minimum wage. So let Nigeria also charge 3 or 4 months of Nigerian minimum wage as annual university tuition. We need to stop subsidizing waste, which is what has kept us from building new infrastructure or better maintaining old ones. We need a university education system that can sustaim itself with only little subvention fund from the government.

Other aspects of tertiary education, like the trade/technical schools can be charged lower. The economy of Nigeria or any country at that, does not need all the able bodied youth to be university educated.

Let people pay good money that they have already proven they actually have, for their children's education in Nigeria, while the very brilliant but indigent students can apply for the scholarship scheme that many Nigerian firms and organizations in Nigeria will be funding then, since no such funding will go towards the foreign scholarships anymore.

What impact has studying abroad had on Nigerian economy and state in general?

I feel it does not directly impact Nigeria's economy and growth.
They don't come home to setup companies
No manufacturing

Road construction, Chinese are employed
Dam construction...Chinese or other foreign nationals

Medicine, nothing really to write home about. People still have to travel out. Just name it
