I know the road in the video very well, that is East Sunset right behind the airport.

As for self driving, I am not sure how comfortable I am with that right now. Maybe as the software keeps getting updated, it will get to the point where I am comfortable cruising in such vehicles.

Elon pushed these vehicles out before they were ready. I don’t know if the software has been fixed now but at first (in independent testing) they weren’t able to detect little kids randomly crossing the road. Maybe he had a recall and fixed that issue or not but I can’t trust my life to someone like that who doesn’t listen and only does what he wants. You know if you randomly crush a child because your self driving car didn’t see it, the parents can’t go after Elon and his billions. They’ll come after the driver and their insurance. Because they’ll say you’re ultimately responsible regardless of the type of car

Can the Tesla Self-Driving work well on the Nigerian roads?

I’ve been testing the Tesla Self-Driving software here in Las Vegas, Nevada for sometime now and I made a video about my experience. You can see the video below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nw9MRg1vNg

The software did a good job, but it was not perfect, it missed the ramp to get on the freeway, but it was smart enough to reroute itself and join the freeway using another ramp.

The roads here are better organized than those in Nigeria, but I’d love to hear what you guys think about self-driving cars in Nigeria.

When will self-driving car full Naija?
hope no he glo network you dey use take coordinate this car? undecided

Self driving cars will full everywhere when we can solve our electricity problems ..🤔

Thank you for the support.

I say make I ask the pros on ground about self driving in Nigeria o!

Ignore the uninformed comments; there are already self parking and self driving capable cars in Lagos. The mapping in Lagos is pretty good especially with Waze which I understand has been acquired by Google.

There is no legislation backing driverless cars so I suspect no one would try anything other than self parking - it would simply be illegal.

Great fun you are having there! wink

The software is being perfected with Indian roads. If it works there, it will work anywhere in the world. Our roads are not as chaotic as those in Indian cities. The only challenge will be potholes. With Starlink internet becoming mainstream, the cars will make their way and work in Nigeria.

It uses the lines, marking and signs on the road to enhance navigation

It could work in capital cities with good roads

After that you’re on your own

I think we are still in some form of test phase and I am hoping we get there sooner.

Google map still dey mess up when you're the one driving. Let alone fully Auto.

It can't work.

Maybe in Morocco, South Africa it can try. Just maybe within the city of Abuja. Anything outside that, you're on your own

Op, next time just tie a big cardboard on your hands and label them "Left" and "Right" before you make this videos.

As for if it will work in Nigeria, it won't last for 30 minutes before the program crashes due to overwork.

It would keep updating new scenarios into its server before your know it, AWS cloud is filled.

Fvck with lawless Nigerians and see the consequences.

Elon musk is a rash and braggadocious person I don’t trust any of his new technology until they’ve been extra extra tried and tested. The original versions of the tesla that he didn’t develop but took over have been okay. until he came in is running the company into the ground. Pushing problematic new vehicles that aren’t ready for the road just so his name can be more and more out there.

Don’t believe me, research what’s going on with his new cyber trucks.
But that is the only way to train the AI. Machine Learning works by acquiring more and more data for optimization. The reason it takes many trials to perfect some of those things is because they are innovative. There have never been any like that before.
Look at his space X rocket lunches, after several attempts in the past, just last few weeks he succeeded in the most critical aspect, the launcher part of rocket was recovered to be reused. A fate that was impossible for all previous mission controls.
The experiment of putting these driverless vehicles on the road is aimed towards improving the data base on the next version of the software. It has to be tried to recognize almost all possible scenarios, and they are zillions of such scenarios.
It will work well given enough time, resources and of course some difficult mishaps.

And risking people’s lives while at it?

There was a time in history when horse driven carts and passengers were competing for road space. Horse cart owners were furious and advocated for more safety measures to be implementation.
However, the advantage of having motorized vehicles took the upper hand. That is why till date, you still hear the expression “guide your horse.”
There will always be some legal implications and unforeseen consequences of every new technology.

You’re talking about something different here

There are ways to test self driving vehicles in simulation; at least make sure they pass certain bench marks before releasing to the public.

Which they did and the vehicles didn’t pass certain tests yet Elon released them anyway. That’s reckless and unnecessary

The technology cannot work by stimulation. It is waste of time trying to dwell on that. It needs tons of data from real world situations. For instance, if you watched this video, you would have noticed how the vehicle missed a turn at a narrow exit towards the airport. The next version can’t miss that point because that information was captured and would be implemented.
That is the improvement they are aiming to achieve.

Abuja Nigeria is possibly one of the few cities in Africa that full self driving will work without extraordinary danger to other road users including pedestrians.
