The World Bank has expressed concerns that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s monetary policy tightening may not effectively control inflation.

In its Global Economic Prospects report released on Wednesday, the institution noted that one of the significant risks to Nigeria’s economic growth is the failure of these tightening policies to rein in inflation.

Risks to Nigeria’s growth outlook are substantial, including the possibility that the tightening of monetary policy stops short of reining in inflation,” the World Bank stated.

Despite the CBN’s aggressive interest rate hikes, inflation remains a significant challenge for the country.

The monetary policy rate has increased by 750 basis points since February, reaching 26.25 per cent in May.

However, the World Bank warns that this may not be enough to address the issue.

The report predicts that Nigeria’s economic growth will remain modest, at 3.3 per cent this year and 3.5 per cent in 2025.

The non-oil economy is expected to experience sustained growth, while the oil sector is expected to stabilize as production recovers.

The World Bank also highlights the issue of public debt in sub-Saharan Africa, which is expected to remain elevated over the forecast period.

It noted that “If global interest rates remain high, debt-service costs for countries in the region may rise, increasing the risk of government debt distress.”

The only ways to curb inflation are

1) APC must be booted out
2) Restructure to true federalism

I'm highly disappointed in Tinubu's administration. I've not seen any tangible thing he has done to make food inflation drop. He has now spent over a year in power, and no one knows when this extreme hardship in Nigeria will end.

There's presently no light at the end of the tunnel.

Ours is a policy somersault and isn't econometrically/data driven. This government is filled with jokers who are not sure what they are set out to achieve from the onset.

Some things to do to curb inflation.

-Let tinubu come out and say that subsidy is back and that naira will be defended and pegged at 900/$. Even if they won't do it, there is what is called market sentiment, same way everything went south the moment tinubu said "subsidy is gone" things will get back a bit.... Or if possible, peg the dollar to a particular price, so that investors can make budget with more than 50% accuracy.

-Let the govt subsidize energy for some key industries. That will help them stay at float.

-Do everything possible to clear out bandits stopping our farmers from going back to farm.

-Open land borders to neighbouring countries so that food particular could be more competitive in terms of price.

Most of our inflation is caused by FX fluctuations and inability to produce farm foods like before.

Using monetary policy and inflation rates won't work as Nigeria is not running a credit economy.

Under Jonathan, Nigeria's economy was the best in Africa and ranked the 3rd fastest growing economy in the world.

Yet, Rankadede minions were ready to slaughter and maim and burn their fellow countrymen to boot him out of governance in 2015.

Africa's problem is homegrown.

2023, Nigeria imports from USA was $2.6b.

China Nigeria trade was $23b

Common sense says that's 10 times trade with USA. Why do we still pay mostly in dollars?
If we are serious, we should activate the Yuan Swap deal and that will reduce the pressure on the USD and bring down the dollar exchange rate.

Let's think and act Nigeria first.
