It is the failure of the military and other security operatives that emboldened the likes of Simon Ekpa. There have been several media reports of the herdsmen attacking states in Nigeria, destroying farmlands, raping women, butchering people who tried to challenge them and burning houses. This is something several states still go through today.

When the people try to retaliate, soldiers are deployed to protect these folks. There have been several reports that herdsmen who were caught bear arms supplied from military barracks. The NA's serial numbers inscribed on the guns indicate their sources.

Unfortunately, everyone cannot be as quiet as Benue people who allow the marauders to kill them and even threaten to take over their ancestral lands while they watch helplessly for years. Funnily enough, the government doesn't even consider these attacks as a serious issue.

Because mutual suspicion has lived with us since 1967, it's only natural for people to think that the military (which is dominated by people from the north, anyways) is helping these marauders take over people's lands and further their expansionism agenda. In the East, we will resist that with the last drop of our blood!
