Traditional Institutions Must Be Protected From State Govt’s Excesses – Atiku by Bobloco: 11:07am On Jun 25
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed worry over what he described as a growing tendency of state governments to exert influence by distorting the modalities of enthroning traditional stools.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, stressed that traditional institutions must be protected from the arbitrariness of state governments.

In a statement issued on Tuesday via his X handle, the former Vice President said it will become difficult to maintain peace and orderliness in communities if the structure of ascension of traditional rulers was unstable.
p

He, therefore, called for constitutional reform that will not only recognize traditional institutions in the nation’s laws but also define the responsibilities of their offices.

Atiku’s read: “Recent developments in the country has seen a growing tendency of state governments exerting influence in distorting the modalities of enthroning traditional stools.

“It is a reality that stares us in the face from every corner of the country.

“While it is understandable that the institutions of traditional rulership is in the exclusive purview of the state government, although through the local government authorities, it must be established that traditional institutions constitute a component of our governance structure.

“And thus, traditional institutions must be protected from the arbitrariness of state governments that threaten their stability.

“When the structure of ascension of traditional rulers is unstable, it will become equally difficult to maintain peace and orderliness in communities.

“Although our constitution, in its current format, does not ascribe any recognition to traditional institutions, yet our experiences show clearly that they perform enormous roles in the economic life of their domains, as well as maintenance of peace and security in communities.

“I wish to remind that the traditional institutions formed the governance structures before the advent of the colonialists. And they governed well. Consequently, they are institutions we must protect and preserve and not destroy.

“It is, therefore, on this basis that I lean towards the advocacy that calls for constitutional reform that will not just recognize traditional institutions in our body of laws but also define the responsibilities of their offices.

“This reform is even more important in view of the collective drive to stem the ugly tide of terrorism and sundry security challenges at the local levels.

“In conclusion, I must also appeal to state governors to accord the necessary respect to the offices of traditional institutions. The customs that our traditional rulers represent is the totality of our heritage as a people.”

Traditional institutions are pure burden. They have done nothing but imprison the people further. They drain resources. Support the political and corruption system to keep the society down.

Wise, measured words from the best president our country is yet to have.

Our traditional institutions are not just the kings, emirs etc. They also include other aspects of our culture and the things that give us meaning as an individual of this global community.

Atiku has made another big mistake again. Even the president is silent because of sensitivity of the issues.

Traditional institutions should be abolished. Their fore fathers were responsible for slave trade. Much of the backwardness of Africans are traceable to these traditional institutions.
Tell me one advantage of having an Obi, Oba, Emir, etc, except to create divisiveness.

It's absolutely appalling that governors are brazenly manipulating and disrespecting Nigeria's traditional rulers, treating them like pawns to be appointed and dethroned at their whim.

These esteemed leaders have presided over their domains for centuries, long before the existence of Nigeria's political entity.

It's an outrage that the executive and legislative branches are hell-bent on undermining their authority and eroding their cultural significance.

It's high time we recognize the historical and spiritual importance of our traditional rulers and enshrine their autonomy in the constitution, safeguarding their thrones from the whims of power-hungry politicians who seek to exploit and desecrate our cultural heritage.

It's disheartening to see the Attah of Igala, a revered traditional ruler, being made to bow or shake hands with former Governor Bello in such a manner.

This image represents the unfortunate erosion of traditional authority and the imposition of political power over cultural heritage.

COMRADES, honestly, I don't know why state governors don't respect our traditional rulers anymore

I'll suggest that traditional rulers should stop visiting political office holders

Take note of the pattern. Here it is.

Incumbents who aren't in agreement with traditional leaders want to destroy them, while oppositions quickly jump to support such traditional leaders.

One thing is clear: These traditional leaders are weapons in the hands of politicians, and they are mostly looting institutions.

The monarchy system of leadership has started dying naturally, and it will not escape it. These obas, emirs, obis, Sultan, etc. must go. They are one of our main obstacle to unity and progress in Nigeria. Naturally, they will die.

This is also contradictory though.

What is tradition if not the culture of the aborigines in their ancestral homeland?

So a tradition stool is meant to uphold the culture of the aborigines, not the culture of foreigners. A tradition stool should uphold and preserve the culture of the aborigines. This is what is called tradition which should be preserved.

However, If a tradition stool isn't upholding the culture of the aborigines, then such person on such stool is useless in the first place!

The constitution that gives a mere LG Chairman power over a first class traditional ruler is the culprit. But the genesis is from the colonial masters and further perpetrated by the military.

Alhaji, when you were VP, what did you do concerning this?

Whats your point? You don't expect him to comment on everything especially at the initial stage but when a dangerous pattern starts happening, then expect reactions.

If you don't have something sensible to say then keep quiet

Nigerian governors are power drunk. They are part of the major factors impeding the growth of Nigeria. So when clueless people start talking about state police, I just shake my head. They don't want Nigeria to exist anymore.
