If bini kingdom was actually once the greatest kingdom the current generation who were descendants of that great kingdom would have definitely found a way to recreate that greatness today why continue blaming the white man who have since given u all the freedom to recreate that acclaimed greatness? The Chinese don't blame the Japanese for once colonising them nor the Americans blaming the British. |

Ojiofor: Mud houses, are the ideal houses for African setting not stone houses, all great ancient cities were composed essentially of mud houses, don't be deceived by movies or stories of ancient buildings, many of them were rebuilt in the 19th century |

Mrexcell: No one is blaming whiteman,I simply stated that Benin reached its peak before the encounter with the whiteman to preemptively counter those that might want to attribute it's success to the whiteman. Also note that Benin is not independent today,it is controlled by Nigeria, there are limitations. 1 Like |

Goodlyhrt: Most Forest state africans did not know advanced writing forms, you can't blame them for that, writing spread from the east, then Egypt then to Greece who later spread it to Europe, Europeans didn't develop independent writing ability, why should Africans be blamed for not developing independent writing ability |

Ojiofor: Abuja is a capital built from scratch by Nigeria, it can be compared to some of the great cities in the world especially if it's well managed. That is the same way African cities where built from Scratch and could be compared to the best cities in the world in times past. What Africans mainly lacked, which is still the case today is technology, nothing else |

babasolution: It might have reached it's peak in the locality but still wasn't the greatest if it were it wouldn't have fell in one single British invasion there was no records of years of resistance like we have read about from other tribes in the world that strongly resisted the British before they were finally subdued. |

Mrexcell: By the time the British invaded in 1897, Benin had terribly declined and deteriorated, it was was no more great or powerful, even smaller local states were harrasing it,not to talk of the British 2 Likes |

babasolution: Writing spread from which “east”? Dude, BLACK AFRICANS INVENTED WRITING. In fact, probably thousands of African writing scripts have existed before any “white people” existed. Black Africans are the world’s ORIGINAL people. The entire world was black for 100,000 plus years. So called white people, who are just bleached out, albino descendants of ancient African settlers, emerged only 7,000 years ago. They are newcomers to civilisation. Do you know a PAINT FACTORY was discovered in South Africa, complete with evidence of the knowledge of CHEMISTRY, and was carbon dated to 100,000 years old? Africa is the Cradle of Civilisation. Speech, mathematics, writing, the Calendar, architecture, medicine, iron smelting, mineral mining, law, philosophy, religion, marriage, etiquette/protocol, cities, international trade and shipping, and more, are ALL BLACK AFRICAN INVENTIONS AND INNOVATIONS. Africans had scripts we know of which included the Meroitic script, the Nubian script, the KEMET script, also known as hieroglyphs, the Ajami script, the Nsibidi script, the Adinkra symbols, the Ethiopic script etc. ALL OTHER SCRIPTS WORLDWIDE ARE DERIVATIVES OF THE ORIGINAL AFRICAN SCRIPTS. |

Kushites: Medieval or middle ages africans were totally different from the Africans you are referring to,all the inventions of the so called blacks had been lost by the time of the medieval Africans, also Forest Africans of which Benin is part of didn't know much advanced writing forms, only rudimentary writing like the ones developed by the egajham/ ekoi people of the cross river. |

babasolution: The transatlantic slave trade, which peaked in the 1700s, was what weakened these African empires. Even though the Benin kingdom banned all slave-raiding and trading in its realm, it still suffered the debilitating economic effects of the trade on the entire West African sub-region and beyond. By the time the British got there in 1897, they were long past their prime. BUT they still had the great city with its tall monuments and structures, and the British were desperate to destroy it all, and removed all signs of precolonial civilisation. They had to perpetuate the myth that they saved us from barbarism and ‘mud huts’. |

Ojiofor: Timbuktu wasn't burnt down to the ground at any point in its history, Benin was burnt down several times from constant civil wars. Rome wasn't burnt down at any point in its history,Rome used slaves to build its city,Benin didn't,you must understand that this so called Timbuktu is being renovated and maintained constantly. Also forest kingdoms are very susceptible to decay, even your modern buildings decay so fast in Nigeria today if they aren't maintained due to the weather conditions. |

Ojiofor: People look at this illiterate…. Are you saying there was no ancient Benin City? Are you saying that all the historians, historical accounts, eyewitness testimonies by Portuguese, Dutch, and British visitors, plus their drawings and the UK Guardian report posted are all lies and fabrications? All these Europeans from various countries woke up and invented a great African city in midwestern Nigeria where there was none, and fabricated descriptions of it? What sort of human being is this? Please answer this question. Did you pass out of secondary school? Be honest. |

babasolution: That is what I was saying, it was an exaggeration for the poster to claim that Bini city was the most developed city in Africa when they have nothing left of that era as evidence. |

Ojiofor: Dude, BENIN CITY WAS REBUILT AND REOCCUPIED after its total destruction. That is why you cannot see any ‘ruins’. It’s like saying they were was never a city called Hiroshima or Nagasaki in 1940, since they are no ruins of them. Those cities were destroyed totally by bombardment by the US. Go there today, and you will see new cities called Hiroshima and Nagasaki. No ‘ruins’. Even Chicago and Atlanta were destroyed in the US civil war. Go there today. No ‘ruins’. Just modern, rebuilt cities. London itself was almost entirely destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666. Go to London today. No ‘ruins’ of ancient London. So saying that ancient Benin City did not exist because you cannot see the ruins is beyond clownish. It’s rank idiocy. |

Ojiofor: The splendour of Benin art gives credence to that fact because only well developed stable societies can produce such magnificent art,Timbuktu etc never had such splendid art |

Rossikk:You head is far deep in your axss that you can't be saved from your delusions. The British tore down the village sized kingdom simply because it couldn't measure up to it's military might and also because they stubbornly stood in the way of his royal majesty. Blame the unlettered/unexposed Oba of those times that thought they could defeat a mortar bearing military force with JUJU instead of diplomacy. Be gone from my mentions and face your ignorance and delusions away from me. |

babasolution: I have visited old Kano city and their museum I was impressed.I like their ancient method of tanning and dyeing industry that have survived till today.Timbuktu is also great historically and still standing. I will not say they are the most developed because I maybe wrong. When you say something was the best you should be able to show proof. |

babasolution:It is call to make enemity where there is none. TBH the whites have benefited us more than our forefathers and their fables. We should be more concerned in moving forward as their ways have been certified as the way forward. Maybe when we get to the top thanks to them then we can try to conquer them too, re-write the narrative, if we can o.. cough cough tribalism. Till then focus on improving Africa, food sustainability number one, technology etc. Bye! |

Goodlyhrt: Am not against the whites, knowledge reached them before us,that's the fact ,mainly due to subsaharan Africa's location, it was just Providence. They also have a better culture which fostered and endeared their progress and growth, plus the power of guns to amass and channel immense wealth all over the world to their societies. Essentially they were lucky, all fingers are not equal, some as more favored than the other that doesn't make them BETTER. Am only calling for African kingdoms to to reach into their souls and build their societies independent of the country they have been lumped into |
