He does not have to, It's a good strategy. The whole country was watching so this is the time to highlight issues with Biden. People pay attention to negative things than positive things. Answering those questions are easily forgettable.

I see tonight's debate as a repeat of Obama's first debate with Romney in the build up to the 2012 election. It was also a bloodbath for Obama.
