FLOODING: LAGOS TO CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL DRAINAGE COLLECTOR IN AGUNGI TO BRING RELIEF

As Commissioner visits flooded areas in Agungi,

The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab on Thursday said the Government is determined to proffer a permanent solution to flooding in Agungi and its environs through the construction of a bigger collector along Agungi road expected to bring relief to residents in that axis.

The Commissioner disclosed this while speaking with the press after a thorough assessment of the area following the flooding incidents experienced as a result of the 48 hours of continuous rainfall experienced in the state, adding that the construction of a bigger collector became necessary along Agungi Road to preventing flooding in the area.

The Commissioner accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite alongside Heads of Agencies and Directors in the Ministry visited Freedom Park Road / Kusenla Junction, Alpha Beach Road, noting that the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang were deployed while the rain was ongoing to clear the debris in the collector at the aforementioned areas to allow free flow of stormwater.

Wahab mentioned that during the tour a minor encroachment was observed along Alfa Beach behind the Jame Hope University where a blockage was discovered, saying that from Saturday full excavation will start from Alpha Beach to Conservation Road.

The Commissioner said the construction of a new collector at Agungi Road is just one of the several that the State Government would construct to address perennial flooding issues in the identified areas.

“At Agungi we have agreed that the area needs a new collector that will take the water from the road into the lagoon; the collector they have there is too small to serve the volume of Stormwater on the Agungi Streach”
, he said.

Informing that after the construction of a new Collector, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure will also be invited to raise the level of the road, he averred that the flooding issue on System 156 (Upstream) Alpha Beach Road has been a recurring problem for quite a while, stressing that the dredging of the channel would commence immediately towards making the state flood free.

Wahab lamented that owners of some buildings had blocked System 156, emphasising that the state will not fold its hand and allow some people to destroy public infrastructure provided by individuals and the Government because of pecuniary gains.

The Commissioner vowed that the State Government will continue to ramp up enforcement operations across the state to reclaim setbacks and drainage alignments towards preventing flooding.

He appealed to residents to be whistleblowers for the government, saying the government cannot be everywhere. He added that Government Agencies and Ministries will join forces to put a stop to these actions by enforcing our laws.

The amount of shops and buildings illicitly put up by lagosians is the major reason for these ceaseless flooding here and there . Most lagosians are too stuborn & deaf to the dangers they pose on themselves .

Where they sleeping when those shops and houses were being built?

Shebi you guys claim Tinubu built Lagos and from 1999 till date everything has been his blueprint with all the successive governments?

So his blue print could not for prevent all the demolitions taking place these days?

Did all the houses there just fall from the sky?

The problem I have with you guys is how you carry all the efforts of others and praise Tinubu for it but refuse to put the bad sides for him including his own bad sides, the blame will be channeled to other people...

It should be extended to all Island. From Lekki to Ajah. The entire Island is flooded.

There's no proper drainage planning, Likewise there is zero Urban and Physical planning in Lagos. This is the resultant effect.

I didn't know how bad Lekki was until I went out on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The road was flooded,it started from Chevron and ended at Lekki phase one,no movement for almost 7 hours.
God bless the Commissioner for Environment for tackling the menace of flooding in the state but it's time to take some hard decisions.
The Bus stop at Chisco and Ikate are part of the major problem on the road.
The street beside house on the rock Church must be demolished and expanded to build a bigger road and wider drainage.
Those roads are always flooded even when it doesn't rain, the Commissioner for works and Environment must stop the window dressing at Agungi and demolish those houses in those areas to build wider roads and drainage which will feed the collector drain at Agungi.
We also appeal to Mr Governor to quickly finish the road from Freedom way to VGC,that project has been on for more than 2 years.
I also believe the Government must as a matter of urgency, construct an inner road within streets from Chevron to Lekki, and estate on the right of way should be demolished, enough of the shenanigans from those gated estates that won't allow passage to cars who want to avoid the traffic on the
Express way.
Finally Mr Governor,it's time to reconstruct the Lekki-Ajah Expressway, the road needs to be a concrete road like what is been done on the Ajah to Epe axis.
If the toll gate has to be reintroduced for funds to be raised to build the rebuild the road I'm totally for it,the suffering of the last 2 days was unbearable for a lot of residents in that Axis.
I appreciate the wonderful work being done on the Ajah to Eleko axis and also what was done by Governor Ambode from Eleko to Epe but it needs to be extended from Ajah to Lekki.
God bless Lagos state
God bless Nigeria.....

grin The urban blueprint of Lagos was a total mess. The most surprising one to me is Lagos Island, you can image there's no drainage system in Lekki, V.I, Banana island and co.
Minutes light downpour and the whole island is flooded.

The entired Lagos state no get water system, not even sure if water cooperation exist in Lagos

just like saying Govt should be everywhere stopping people from committing crimes.

They should be in every street, house ,rooms....lol

The man specifically said it out loud they can't be everywhere people should be whistle-blowers.

Emergency Flood Abatement Gang were deployed while the rain was ongoing to clear the debris in the collector at the aforementioned areas to allow free flow of stormwater.

Who put the debris in the collector?? It doesn't matter If they build 100 collectors. If the issue of sanitation and proper waste disposal is not addressed and enforced, they are wasting their time and resources. Afterwards they will demolish Houses too and render families homeless whereas sanitation in the state is a Huge Joke!

If that is your excuse, then you are saying government has failed.

People can't be whistle blowers because the government has a town planning ministry which is responsible for ensuring that people don't put up structures just anywhere.

Except you just fell from the sky, have you not seen building with instructions painted in red asking for work to stop?

Have you not seen government papers pasted on new building aites asking for building approvals?

Maybe u are not aware that there is a tier of government called local government? Pls what is their job?
