The National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has shut down about 100 shops in Ogbete Main Market in Enugu State.

Ogbete is the biggest market in the South-eastern state.

NAFDAC’s Director in the South-east, Martins Iluyomade, said the shops were shut down because the owners were allegedly dealing in suspected fake alcoholic beverages.

Mr Iluyomade, a pharmacist, said the agency shut down the shops when its officials raided the market Monday.

He said that during the raid, the agency also confiscated a truckload of adulterated products and arrested four traders suspected of selling fake beverages.

“We stormed the popular Ogbete Main Market, Enugu in Enugu State since Friday and have shut down 100 shops which have been identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages.

“Arrests were made and the suspects are currently in custody,” Mr Iluyomade said.

“This fake wine and alcoholic beverages are being sold to unsuspected customers and the general public but we are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products,” he stated.

Prosecution

Mr Iluyomade said the arrested suspects would be charged to court at the end of their ongoing investigation.

The NAFDAC chief explained that the raid was in furtherance to the agency’s mandate to safeguard the health of Nigerians and rid the South-east of “unwholesome, substandard, fake and adulterated products.”

He said the operation was conducted in collaboration with the personnel of the Nigerian Police Force, State Security Service and the Nigerian Army.

The issue of fake drinks is one of the easiest things to solve really

People sale fake drinks because what is the consequences of bring caught? Almost nothing

Make a law, any business caught selling fake get fined 200 million and would be closed for 18 months or forfit the business and owner won't be allowed to open another business of that kind for 6 years

In fact create a portal for all drink sellers, importers, distributors.. A scan of any drink shall review it's seller, distributor importer/producers

We only have fake drinks because government officials benefit from it

In Canada, their own NAFDAC goes to buy products from the store and tests it for quality on a monthly bases. Here, they only raid distributors only when they got tips from people or because cholera in Lagos has being attributed to illegal drink.

It's not that bad since an arrest is made but i won't be surprised if they let go of the people to continue the sale of the bad product after they pay bribe.

Our NAFDAC is famous at selling their registration number to anybody without proper and continued evaluation of their products on a monthly basis.

What's wrong with our "blothers" from the east? Must everything there be fake and full of crime? That was how one woman at an eatry sold "fanta" that taste like "utricy" 4 me when I went there to eat arpu and bitter leaf. She was looking at me a bit suspicious. Like she was expecting a complain some how. Nawaooo

Same way you said houses that failed to pay your imaginary N3000 fee for gutter clearance should be fined N50 million.

I think you need help with what constitutes a million.

Please, for your healths sake. Don't buy alcohol from small shops or mini marts. Those are their customers. Don't consume alcohol at cheap clubs either. These cake drink merchants supply to them too.
