Aside the timing of the subsidy removal by Jonathan that was wrong, politicians used the fuel subsidy protest to demarket his government. Achebe cut the perfect figure for the prize, and it was not surprising that he got it in 1986. Canonised writers like Achebe who took on Greene and Conrad could not have been rewarded for questioning the jaundiced representation of Africans in Western literature
