'We Waited for Hours and No Bus Came’ — Lagos Residents Describe Flooding

Many Lagos residents have complained about flooding that took over the city overnight, complicating road traffic and preventing commuters from finding buses on Wednesday.

Sharon Adenikan, a storekeeper working in Ikeja, told FIJ that she braved the rain for about two hours without an umbrella before she found a bus to convey her to work.

FIJ met Adenikan in a queue at Egbeda Busstop, where she was awaiting a bus en route to Ikeja under the downpour.

“I regret coming outside today, even though I did it because I had to go to work. We have waited in this queue for over one hour now, and it is not my turn yet,” Adenikan lamented.

My boss is still expecting me but I am already very late for work. I have told him that there are no buses because of the rain.

The queue had over 40 people in it. FIJ waited with Adenikan for another 50 minutes before she reached the head of the queue and got on the next bus.

Another commuter in the same queue told FIJ that he did not think the rain had caused such mayhem until he got close to Egbeda.

The road was terribly flooded for the rain I thought was moderate,” he said.

There were varying levels of flooding around the Egbeda area of Lagos. FIJ observed that some cars approaching Egbeda from Isheri had to maintain only one lane because the entire road was flooded.

Floodwater submerged the road so much that it concealed the gutter and pedestrian walkway.

Another Lagos resident shared a clip of flooding which forced traffic to just one side of their road.

The government of Nigeria really need to declare state of emergency on this climate change of a thing💁🏽‍♂️

Secondly, our cities are poorly planned and this is appalling.🤦🏻‍♂️

We keep endangering ourselves and yet we are not ready to talk about this decades prevailing issues 🤔

Johnson5258:
Why is government to be blamed for our negligence? The entire drainage in Orile is blocked, Mushin is the same, you will see people intentionally dumping refuse inside the drainage, do they have to be told not too always? Is the government supposed to use a draconian method of making them do things rightly? Why?

Calm down bro, please don’t misunderstand me. However government would still be blamed for not having prompt responses towards refuse disposal and secondly our town planning at some point failed because there are no strict law towards monitoring of constructions in the Nigerian states 👌🏻

We shouldn't forget Lagos is a coastal city irrespective of the axis you find yourself ; mainland or island.

Most of this floods are caused by us. We casually throw plastic and nylons on the roads and in our canals.. This promotes flooding to an extent.

Then the people building indiscriminately on flood passages..

Lagos has a blueprints, Real Estate companies and Private individuals should adhere to this blueprints and we'll have a better Lagos!

lagos has been the architect of these floodings, the environment has been damaged beyond repairs. any place that should not be built on, maybe due to the natural state being wet in nature, they will landfill it gradually turning it to luxurious estates cc lekki, banana, and likes without reasoning forgetting that water will find it's way which will eventually resonate to the other parts of lagos. They will have to live with it or better still grow fins and gills because una go soon turn to fish for there

No one could go out of our home zone today mehn. It appears if we residents can't fork out millions to hire a swamp buggy excavator, do the necessary paperwork and get it down here to clear clogged up canals, the government can't do shit about it.

It's either millions or flooding. Your pick.

Instead of effectively executing an effective drainage system, they were demolishing our houses because they were defeated in Lagos.

Now the chicken has come home to roost.

Global warming will make Lagos flooding worse. Better plan a good drainage system rather than the pretentious targeting of the houses of people from whence the sun rises grin
