Good take. A vehicle shorting oil is not the end of its life or usefulness. Just do your cost valuation against management or repairs and take action.

Like me today, I have oil shortage but due to bad leaks, my engine will need to be dropped for the repair which I don't have the time to do now or intend to do anytime soon (so as not to allow a mech add an issue to my issues) so I just keep topping up as necessary.

I even travel very well with it, here to the east and back frequently. I just stop at Ore and top up a litre and it will be low again at my destination. That's how I mitigate its adverse effects during long distance trips. On a daily I top up a litre in like 700kms in my usual city drive.

The fact is if its due to an oil burning issue, then the catalysts or O2 sensors can get bad quickly if it's not tackled on time. This is where I am lucky

Do you know that I'm actually suspecting catalyst for my engine oil burn, I guess that might be the culprit coz when we opened the top cylinder, the camshaft is still very clean and there was nothing like smudges inside.

No no no, you didn't understand my post.

Bad catalysts or O2 sensors are both symptoms of oil burn and not its cause

Blackbishop already hinted at your valve seals (minor repair) as being the culprit. The other culprits could be bad cylinder walls (major repair) or pcv valve (easy replacement)

Fee days laterone of the hose burst on my way back from a trip and all the gear oil were lost . Had to park the car and look for a mechanic it was then I noticed that one of the hose isn't meant for gear oil.
New hose was bought as well as new gear oil and the gear got back on actio. I drove down and confronted my mech. He apologized it wasn't intentional, then i told me to pary nothing happens to my gear.

Few days later the gear would take few minutes to engage in the morning and drives fine the rest of the day till d nxt morning, sometimes i will have to shift to D2 b4 it will engage.
Called my ,,m ech again to complain and he suggested we wash the bottom plate that its dirty.
We did that yesterday and it took the car much longer time to engage this morning. But it drive normal since today.

Please I need your candid advice/ suggestions.

Your gearbox was driven for some miles while under severe starvation of lubrication

I'm sorry, it will only get worse. Just fill up and never touch it again and watch its deterioration. It would get to a stage and then stabilise but I doubt it will ever function as it did before the unfortunate 'hose bursting' incident

You'd have to manage it as it is so far as it still functions for your use.

My Acura is 4 years in naija and 2 years as mine. Even after 3,000km that I do my oil change, the oil level is the same place where it was after servicing. Does not reduce. Honda engines are good.

Good day boss, my 2 cents here is that any car that has a high mileage you don't drain out the transmission transmission fluid completely u only drain a certain portion and top it back with the fake we have here..... Also the fluid flushed out when you were driving if am correct? If I was the mech you called I will advice you to let the gear cool down before any work can be done... once you open or top the gear oil when hot boss so pe otilo......

Engine alone is not car, there are more than 100 components associated with or connected in the engine bay. Honda engine is rugged but the gear is ajebo. Just take a look at the car complaints on this thread, how many are corolla? A car gains wide popularity not because people are using it, but because it has been tested and it is actually durable, quality and easy to maintain.

A car is graded for its total package, engine, gear, electrical system, quality of interior, body design and general quality of its parts.

If your car is still engaging and driving fine throughout the day after the early morning problem then let it be. Just start saving to buy another gear in the future. U can still use the car like that for the next 2 years or more provided u make sure ur oil is properly guaged.
Any opening of that gear now is a definite 50/50 and even the 50% good, I give u just few months and u are in the market for another gear.

The only reason u should try working on ur gear is if it is not moving again at all and a technician has given u up to 3 months guarantee, then it is worth the trial.

Most gear specialist na bullshit. Why is he giving a guarantee of 6 months ,if he's sure of his stuff.
Better don't throwaway money. After 2 months, if there's any issue, he won't refund your money. Don't be surprised, he will ask you to pay for more items to be used to further repair the gear.


120k ,thats like 25-30% of the cost of a tokunbo gear

I understand you point bro, but I am not arguing about the sturdiness of Corolla, I was just pointing out the water part. Any car with a good cooling system can idle for a whole day without overheating. I have driven pass a water that cover my hood at aba,many buses and trucks got spoilt in the water but i passed. The only thing is that the next day i changed my alternator bearing due to the water was very muddy.
