I Felt Dehumanised At Lasuth Dental Clinic by Quiteparrot: 12:39am On Jul 07, 2024
I was at LASUTH yesterday for a dental checkup, there was a long list of people to see doctor as usual being a general hospital and I patiently waited for my turn.

The student doctor kept pounding my throat with their instruments even while she was carried away gisting and giggling with her colleague, she would say to me open your mouth wider, bend your tongue to the left because I can't see anything then out of frustration I asked don't you guys have the proper instruments like a mouth gag or something to make this easier, she then called for a mirror but wasn't given any.

The diagnosis was taking forever, eventually I was asked to go for an x-ray (located at the same wing of the clinic). I thought I've seen it all until I got to the x-ray room, immediately I stepped in the supposed radiologist that ought to work on my case told me that she needed to take a break and walked out of the room not minding my plea that I've not eaten a thing since morning and it was around 3pm, then her assistant asked me to sit down muttered the world: oju lonroju Shanu, I said thank you not knowing I was about to be dehumanised.

She put a poly bag rapped up small rectangular shaped camera under my tongue, she didn't get me prepared for the pain that could come with it, she kept sweeping the underneath of my tongue with the camera using her fingers looking for the right angle to place the camera , yelling at me to be still and calling me unprinted names. Words can't explain the pain I was going through during this procedure, she said this pain isn't up to child bearing nah be still or else I will leave. After placing the camera at the supposed right angle underneath my tongue, she would start to look for a staff who will take the shot for her, by the time she comes back, camera don shake, she would start all over again. I shed tears and started drooling.

Eventually she was able to take the shot after unbearable back and forth and asked for my phone to take the pics on the pc so as to show the docs, how about my phone camera quality isn't good enough, mind you this is their usual practice after the x-ray, you will have to snap the results with your phone. I showed the Doc the pictures, them say they can't see anything that the x-ray isn't visible enough that I needed to do another one, I wept inside, went back to the x-ray room met the other lady that walked out for a break initially then the procedures continued with severe and unbearable pains but this time with some encouraging words from the radiologist.

A fight broke out among the nurses because of the gloves used during the procedure, it was just so messy. Eventually I had to get a toothbrush and toothpaste and brush thoroughly before I could eat something at a restaurant, I went to complain of a tooth but I came back with bruises all over my mouth. Shey na so dentist visit dey be ABI na dem no get the right tools?, it's my first time though

I recently had a distressing experience at LASUTH Dental Clinic that left me feeling dehumanized. From the moment I arrived, I felt like just another number rather than a valued patient. The staff's impersonal and dismissive attitude added to my discomfort, and I was met with indifference rather than compassion. The lack of clear communication and the hurried manner in which I was treated only compounded my anxiety. It's disheartening to expect care and instead feel disregarded and marginalized all in one dental implants. This experience has made me question the quality of patient care at the clinic and underscored the need for more empathy and professionalism in healthcare settings.

Why can't government do something about this? There should be room for feedback and suspension or outright sacking of defaulting workers. It's better one goes to private clinic.

Two years ago, I had my tooth extracted and it was one of the most painful experience of my life.

Those people at Dental hospitals are savages who don't have any iota of decency. They malhandled me in a way that I can't describe.

The heartless dentist used hammer and chisel to break the tooth before using something like a pincer to extract it. Whenever I cry out loud, she'll say I should man up and stop crying like a woman. She said she had injected me already and that I'll only feel pressure not pain. Whatever the fvck that means. undecided undecided

The rough handling of my mouth and their harsh words, I can never forget. It made me swore never to have an extraction again in my life. cry cry cry

At the end of the whole painful experience, they tried to cajole me into buying drugs, mouthwash & flox from them (rather than from the hospital counter). And guess what? I told them "No". cheesy cheesy cheesy

How can you wake up in the morning and go to a health care facility in Nigeria and expect to get good seevice?

Once I step into any healthcare facility either government owned or private owned I always expect the worse.Sometimes it turns out good and they give good service, but my mind is always conditioned to expect nonsense.

Truth be told those guys are over stretched and always at the verge of anger almost always.

So sorry about your experience but I had a good laugh.
You should use a private hospital next time.
I still have 2 teeth I am supposed to extract but can't just go there regardless how cheaper it is. Those people don't know what they are doing... I'd rather maintain and bare this pain for the time being.

It's only when u fall sick requiring some level of special care or treatment that you'd understand there's no Healthcare in nigeria.

Those doctors go use to specimen. If u are not neglected, they may end up misdiagnosing u.

Anything u see,u take am like that. Is this reasons Nigerians are super prayerful.

'May God nor allow me fall sick' ,because,if u do,OYO oo

Why not talk to them there and caution them. Why not tell them how you feel rather than taking all their bullshit like a coward and then coming on nairaland here to rant.
You actually had a choice if na me i go change am for you imediately if you rough handle me for hospital and if you refuse to treat me i will go to another hospital.

I went through my own dental trauma as a kid there, when LASUTH was then Ikeja General Hospital, staff there did feel uncomfortable whenevet my dad took me there because he gave it to them fire for fire..decades later, poor services persists!

Those same healthcare professionals doing anyhow there. would be scared to repeat same behaviours when they relocate abroad to work.

Wow! This is so extra!
It's probably because it's the general hospital. Anything government run is always like that. I had an extraction at a private dentist and I was petted and 'sorry-ed' when I complained of any discomfort. Pele.

As long as It is not a government owned facility, I have always gotten good services from private hospitals and clinics in Lagos. So it might be your location.

There are two places you don't wanna start a fight with the service provider, hospital and restaurant else you could be poisoned or injected to death by a psychopath. If you go through this kind of pain you can either lash out at them and leave the premises or endure the pain for a positive end result. In my case I chose to endure to avoid having to go through such pain again.

Some health services should only by sought after at private hospitals. You still get some amount of customer service and decency there.
The entire country needs overhauling but that cannot begin with these leeches in government. I had an experience at a federal university last week that I feel more than 1 person should lose their job over but pursuing it to a logical conclusion seems like a waste of effort.

I now have an idea what he went through there.

Your story caused me some laughter grin, though painful for you.

Sorry OP, apart from the queue had a decent experience at Igando general dental clinic. But was just scaling and polishing for me and my son after they checked our teeth and was just 2 spoon like instruments that seemed to have a mirror on it that was used no gagging or stress on us.

But I saw people for this same xray, it was a machine like stuff that was over the head I saw when I looked into the room and what they brought out was a very smaller version of our normal xray film. Their process didn't sound like yours maybe the equipments used were different.
