JUDGMENT ON LG "AUTONOMY" NOT YET UHURU. At best, it's pyrrhic victory, if I may say. Though am yet to read the full text of the judgement, but going by the brief summary of what one is reading in the media, this judgement may not stand the test of time. Not yet Uhuru! 1. Their Lordships of the Supreme Court, have neglected to take a cursory look at the provisions of Section 162 (5) and (6) making clear and unambiguous provisions that the LGs allocations will first go to the states and again, creating the Joint Allocation account, between the states and the LGs. Can we say the Supreme Court has, by this judgement, nullified or expunged this constitutional provisions by fiat? 2. The governors are the greatest obstacles to rapid development in the 774 LGs since the inception of this democratic experiment. I forsee them going back to the Supreme Court for a clear judicial interpretation of section 162 (5) and (6). And again, in the interim, I still forsee them finding a political succour to the issue at hand, kind of hoodwink the LG chairmen into submitting the funds in an arrangement that will never be clear to anyone. 3. My suggested panacea to the imbroglio: let there be a constitutional amendment that will expunge section 162 (5) and (6) and also section 197(1) of the 1999 constitution providing for States Independent Electoral Commissions. If this is achieved, then we can be talking of true autonomy for the LGs. 1 Like |

Allee90: if you bring 10 most righteous leaders to form ONE NIGERIAN PRESIDENT and this can't be implemented, there can't be even development. This is because, local government is more important to the PEOPLE than federal government. This is the way forward. When the people begin to squeeze the neck of the LGA chairmen, the ELECTED chairmen will do the same to their governors which I believe gave birth to this ongoing transition. |

Odidigboigbo: This is likely possible but it will not last long. You do know even successors of predecessors of governors go against agreements. Even if the governors using the council members to impeach the chairman, still it will not last long. There will be a time when majority will stand their ground. Remember LG chairman are not on pension like governors, so there will be a resistance. 1 Like |

ddippset: Yeah, you forget the percentage. Federal get 52%, normally the states get the rest 47% hence enough money, now state get 26 percent and local government get 20.8 or so, that is about 45 percent of what they usually get will be withheld by federal lol, you still think there is enough money. 1 Like |

The debts owed by these state governors will be shared between the LG and State or only the state will bear the debt. Just asking for a friend who is a governor and has borrowed billions |
