For example, you know what it takes to pay for house rent yearly. Averagely 500k per annum in Lagos. And they're giving free house in the barracks lipsrsealed

Have you been inside a barracks to see the average accomodation in the barracks? You won't agree to pay 500k for 90 percent of those accomodations..

In the Army is either you are a Major General or you are a Brigadier General. The highest rank in the Army is the rank of Lieutenant General and it is only for the COAS. He listed a rank as General. There's no such rank in the military. I can authentically tell you that the salary structure he quoted was for about 4 years ago. They earn much more than that now
If you say there's no rank like General in the Nigerian Army, then what rank does the Chief of Defense Staff wear? Or are saying he wears the same Lieutenant General as the Chief of Army Staff? Man, no one knows all; so learn. The CDS is always a four-star general while the COAS, along with the Chief of the Naval and the Chief of the Air Staff are always three-star generals. The President is always the Field Marshal (Commander-in-Chief of the three arms of the Armed Forces)

The US pay, although it seems nice.. but does the pay provide a good standard of living?

You know $1,700 is about 2.2m+ in Nigeria, which is a whole lot.

But compared to the US, is the $1,700 a month a good salary?

For those who thinks that the poster posted rubbish, I want to tell you something. I am very close to the barracks, one of my siblings is married to a soldier, I can tell you without mincing words that most soldiers that I know do make complains about thier payments. They mostly rely on the crumbs they will get when posted out for lucrative outside duties like providing security' at different check points or oil installations or as security orderlies to politicians. And to even get these slots They most times have to play some kind of politics in the barracks. Nigeria needs to take care of her armies. Those guys are risking thier lives for Nigeria for almost nothing in return.

It seems the NCOs are doing the job for the love of their country, cos their salaries are worthless in this present economy.

The highest rank in the army is the rank of the lieutenant General and it's strictly for the COAS. There's no rank as General. It's either you are a Major General or a Brigadier General

The chief of defense staff (CDS) holds the rank of a General. He is a 4 star general .

Lieutenant general is not the highest rank in the army

The salary structure in this country perpetuates poverty.

Why should an NCO that has put in over 20 years in the military (manytimes with a family) with all the transfers and risks involved be on less than 100k? Where does experience and years of service sit?

There should be a good overlap between higher ranked NCO and COs. I see no reason why a warrant officer can't earn as much as a lieutenant colonel. These are very experienced folks with good education many of whom were only unfortunate to be from poor families and hence didn't have the 'legs' to get into the NDA

Also, the pay appreciation with the higher ranked COs is too much in comparison to lower ranks.

For starters, no rank should be more than 10x that of a private. If a private or LC is on 50-60k, then a general should not be on more than 600k. Take the UK for example. A general earns grossly about 6x that of a private. Guess what? That General would end up paying relatively more tax so his take home would be about 3-4x that of lower ranked NCOs. Thats how to adress poverty and make sure higher ranked officers are concerned about the living condition of lower ranked colleagues.
Corporal earn more than a Lieutenant? Lol

Life no balance. The least paid jobs in Toronto earn more than a Nigerian general.
How is the least paid job in Toronto pay more than a General in Nigeria, is the person on minimum wage in a very expensive city like Toronto not buying food and paying rent? Keep doing rubbish conversion to Naira and be deceiving yourself that you are better financially than a general in Nigeria.
