TROOPS RAID IPOB/ESN TRAINING CAMP IN ABIA STATE, CLEAR BANDITS HIDEOUTS IN ONDO, RECOVER ARMS, AMMUNITION

In a clearance operation conducted in the early hours of Wednesday 12 June 2024, troops of the Nigerian Army in conjunction with a Task Force Tactical Patrol Squad conducted a raid on a training camp of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) located in Ihechiowa community of Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.

During the operation, troops successfully infiltrate and dismantled the camp, destroying all training apparatus and facilities found on-site. The raid marks a critical move in the ongoing efforts to curb acts of terrorism by IPOB and ESN, which have been linked to various security challenges and violence unleashed on innocent citizens as well as security operatives in the state.

In addition to the destruction of the training camp, the troops also targeted buildings used as hideouts for key ESN Commanders. The operation was executed with precision and yielded significant intelligence.

The raid operation was sequel to heightening terrorists' activities of IPOB/ESN, targeting law-abiding citizens and government agencies in Abia State and other parts of Southeastern Nigeria.

Further updates on the operation will be communicated as the troops continue with the operations.

In a separate operation, troops of the Nigerian Army in conjunction with other security agencies have successfully cleared bandits and criminals' hideouts around Irele, Igbobini and Segbemi Kiribo in the general area of Ese - Odo forest in Irele Local Government Area of Ondo state. During the clearance operations, the troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 rifle magazine, 5 locally fabricated single barrel guns, and one locally made pistol. Other items recovered from the bandits include 18 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition and 24 live Cartridges.

Troops of the Nigerian Army deployed for counter terrorism operations in Ebonyi State in a swift and decisive response have repelled an attack on Isheke Police Station which came under attack by suspected IPOB terrorists resulting in the torching of the facility and several vehicles.

Troops, on arrival at the scene, launched a counter-attack on the terrorists overpowering and compelling them to flee in disarray. Accordingly, troops engaged the terrorists in a hot pursuit, leading to an intense gun battle, which resulted in the elimination of five suspected terrorists and seizure of several weapons.

The troops recovered one PKT Machine Gun with a link belt containing 94 rounds of ammunition, 2 AK-47 rifles with 3 magazines, containing 11 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, one Sub Machine Gun with a magazine, and a Sienna SUV with registration number Ebonyi CHR-364JC.

NAF UAV, NOT HELICOPTER, CRASHED IN KADUNA

Contrary to reports on social media as well as on a handful of traditional media outlets that a NAF helicopter had crashed in Kaduna earlier today, 1 July 2024, be informed that no helicopter crash occurred. Instead, a NAF Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) experienced a mishap after take-off for a mission, at a location near Rumji Village and about 15 Km from Base. Since it is an unmanned vehicle, there were no casualties on board or on ground. Preliminary investigation has since commenced to ascertain what may have caused the mishap. Nigerians can be rest assured that this minor setback will not, in anyway, impinge on all ongoing operations.

It should also be pointed out that the propensity to always rush to press in the name of ‘breaking news’ without a hold of the complete facts should be discouraged in its entirety. While the news of the crash filtered in, some outlets had misinformed Nigerians that a helicopter had crashed without the decency to clarify from the NAF. This attitude should be discouraged as it negates the principle of developmental journalism, balanced reporting and fairness. Members of the media are again advised to always seek clarification from authorized military outlets before rushing to ‘break’ the news.

CAS CHAIRS NAF SAFETY REVIEW BOARD, CALLS FOR APPROPRIATE ACTIONS TO BREAK ACCIDENT CHAIN

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has stated that the actions or inactions of all Nigerian Air Force (NAF) personnel will help to either propel or break the accident chain sometimes experienced in the course of NAF activities or operations. He also called for the emplacement of appropriate actions to break the accident chain so as to enshrine a good safety culture that transcends all levels in the NAF. He made this known earlier today, 2 July 2024, as he chaired the 2024 NAF Safety Review Board (SRB) meeting held at NAF Headquarters, Abuja. According to the CAS, “As members of the Safety Review Board, it is vital that we thoroughly examine all the safety issues arising from this meeting and come up with objective and innovative ideas that would enhance safety in the NAF. While we all know that safety is a collective responsibility, this Board is primarily accountable for safety administration in the NAF.” While noting that accidents are the results of a sequence of events, beginning with deliberate decisions taken, he also stated that the NAF cannot afford to pay lip service to issues relating to safety and called for determination of all personnel to improve safety in the various areas units.

Speaking on the importance of the meeting, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that the NAF regards safety as one of its core functions and is committed to developing, implementing, and reviewing policies to ensure that all activities are conducted in a safe and conducive environment. He then assured that the NAF will intensify efforts to enhance safety in the NAF as it continues its transformation into, “an agile and resilient force that effectively meets the airpower demands of national security in all operational environments”. The CAS also stated that more interesting and auspicious days lie ahead for the NAF in view of the Government’s commitment to equipping the NAF with modern platforms. The need for a proactive and enhanced safety culture, he continued, is thus critical in ensuring that their usage are maximized.

Earlier, the Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Air Vice Marshal Micheal Onyebashi revealed that the SRB is the apex body of the NAF Safety Management Structure, designed as a biannual meeting that deliberates on major policy, resource allocation and regulatory issues relating to safety. He went on to state that the Board is required to give direction and guidelines that would ensure the entrenchment of a healthy safety culture in the NAF. He then noted that the NAF has since commenced the introduction of safety education at all NAF entry points and training institutions as directed in the last SRB, as well as leveraging the online learning infrastructure at the Air Warfare Centre, Abuja, to sustain an appreciable level of safety education across the NAF. Speaking further, he noted that with the reactivation of NAF platforms as well as the induction of additional platforms, the need for the SRB, commands and units to work assiduously to ensure that safety standards are maintained in all NAF activities is imperative. He then reminded the Board of its responsibility to proffer strategies and ideas that would enable the NAF to experience continuous improvement of safety in all its operations.

While delivering his paper at the meeting titled, ‘Senior Managers’ Role in Organizational Safety Management System’, Dr Iteke Ifeanyichukwu Chukwunonso of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, stated that managing safety entails managing risks and reactively, proactively and predictively controlling risks to an acceptable level. He also noted that safety management should have a business-like approach and be woven into the fabrics of an organization until it becomes a part of their culture. While commending the NAF for its exceptional safety standards, he called on its leadership to continue to retain the responsibility and accountability for safety. Engr Chukwunonso also emphasized the need for NAF leadership to promote open reporting through non-punitive disciplinary policies while encouraging incentives for promoting safety. In closing, Engr Chukwunonso noted that senior management remains the core for safety management in any organization.
