They've basically been so driven to madness in their quest to prove they have no links whatsoever with the Igbo nation, that they've invented the most spurious of links to an alien Benin civilization of which there isn't even the most vestigial of traces in Ikwerre culture. Even my own Idemili and Onitsha kin in Anambra have more demonstrable Benin roots than Ikwerres.

Language isn't all that defines identity, and Igbo consciousness is a fairly new development among the Igboid cluster from the late colonial/decolonisation era. Igbos are far from a monolithic entity and there is great historical and cultural and ethno-linguistic diversity among Igbo clans who have developed this common consciousness. Some of our ancestors have Edoid or Ekoid or Igala historical roots and there are Igbo speakers that I can barely comprehend a word of their language. It's a democratic choice, but you don't have to spin laughable myths about your roots and history like Ikwerre talebearers have spun about their mythical Benin roots.
