Weak Yen and a greying population. China has a huge internal market and is the world's factory as it has integrated supply chains across major products. Also, the Chinese are more aggressive in making inroads into newer markets. Something the Japanese aren't good at. As for technological know-how, China has surpassed Japan and in some industries surpassed Germany. There are just a few industries the Chinese are yet to conquer such as aircraft engineering, semiconductor machinery and advanced biotech. Anything you think the Japanese are good at, the Chinese have surpassed them.

Most importantly, Japan's economy fell when they signed the Plaza Accords which the US forced it to. Then, Japan's economy was roaring and almost surpassed that of the US. The same "IP theft" the US accuses China of today, the US did the same to Japan. By signing the Plaza Accords and accepting imbalanced trade deals in semiconductor chips/automobiles, the Japanese economy descended into the "Lost Decades". It is such a similar deal the US wants China to sign, which thankfully, Chinese elites have refused. Hence, the so-called US-China trade war.

The point however is our inferiority complex and subservience to the west is a big factor in our underdevelopment as exemplified by a Nigerian who sees America in the top 10 and Nigeria nowhere to be seen and the only thing he has to say is “God bless America”…..it speaks volumes about the problem with our pysche.

Three major reasons:

- Nigeria is not a united country.
- Nigerians consume Anglophone media content because of the English language. This also affects Chinese Singaporeans, some Hong Kongers, India etc.
- The relationship between the US and Nigeria has been seemingly benign compared to say Nigeria and the UK or France and Francophone Africa.

Nigeria was never meant to develop so you can never find them in the list of progressive countries. Our leaders are mere stooges helping to keep the country crippled for life. Till the people rise and challenge the present order nothing will ever change even in 50yrs.

Currency.

The Japanese Yen is now over 160 to a dollar, I think. Just a few years ago, it was 110 -115. As your currency's value decreases against the dollar, your GDP will be recalculated by the percentage of the decrease.

Same thing happened to Nigeria.

That's why we went from No.1 in Africa to No.4. If naira keeps falling, and South African Rand, or Egyptian Pound remain stable or gain in value against the dollar, their GDP will be worth more in dollar value than Nigeria 's. That' exactly what happened in the past year.

The strength of every economy in the world, including each country's GDP, is calculated by reference to the almighty US dollar.

Another problem for the Japanese is the country's population is falling every year. It means there are not enough newborns replacing those dying. So, their domestic market is shrinking, their companies can't find enough employees, the proportion of old people relative to young ones is high and increasing. In another 100 years, Japan's population will be less that half what it is today.

Japanese are not having sex. The men refuse to have it. The women don't want it either. So, few children are being born. The country is slowly dying.
