The FG must name something big in this country after the legendary Professor Chinua Achebe.

I am a great fan and reader of Wole Soyinka, by the way, so this is not based on any beef with the great Nobel-winning writer, who certainly earned the right to have the National Theatre named after him by President Tinubu.

But we must not put Chinua Achebe, the Booker Prize winning author of Africa’s greatest novel, Things Fall Apart, in the position of the proverbial lizard of his great book who fell from the tall iroko tree, and promised to praise himself if no one else did.

That book is Required Reading in the curricula of schools all over the world, from Kenya to the USA.

It has been translated into over 100 languages worldwide, and remains till date, the biggest selling novel by an African, bringing great honour to Nigeria.

Achebe was also an erudite advocate for good governance and govt accountability.

According to wiki

“Chinua Achebe…. was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic who is regarded as a central figure of modern African literature. His first novel and magnum opus, Things Fall Apart (1958), occupies a pivotal place in African literature and remains the most widely studied, translated, and read African novel.

Along with Things Fall Apart, his No Longer at Ease (1960) and Arrow of God (1964) complete the "African Trilogy".

Later novels include A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987).

In the West, Achebe is often referred to as the "father of African literature", although he vigorously rejected the characterization.“

Did Achebe and Soyinka not study the English language like you?

If it’s okay for you to communicate in English, why isn’t it okay for them?

Their's went beyond just studying English in school like you and I.

White people noticed their talent on time and used it against them in such a way that instead of mastering African languages for their writing, they instead chose to master a foreign language.

From young Soyinka's days at Leeds University, he was already surrounded by Western secret services and being groomed for the destruction of African languages. But he didn't know! They went all in and from 1962 were used to declare war against African languages. That's why I, you, we write in English today.

I know you don't know this because it has been a best kept secret but if you're interested in further information, read the books below.

1. African literature and the CIA
2. The liberal conspiracy

You’re saying the CIA made Achebe to write Things Fall Apart in English in 1958?

I’m not really sure what you are saying, man.

Why must he name something big after Achebe? Was Achebe the twin brother of Soyinka? Even if he was, do they both have to swim the same waters in life? Perhaps people like you should have insisted that Soyinka should also have died when Achebe was called home.
What a ridiculous demand on the President!! cool cool

I get your point.

But you are making a bigger issue of it than it really is.

It’s not as if the books cannot be translated into native languages even today.

Nothing has been lost.

It’s just a question of demand, especially in a country like ours whose lingua franca is English, with those books written in English to reach the majority of Nigerians, and of course the outside world.

So leave the writers alone. They only responded to the society they found themselves in.

If we want indigenisation, it cannot start with the writers, but with the govt and people.

If the federal govt decides to change our lingua franca to say, Edo or Efik, it wouldn’t take 6 months before you start seeing all these great literary works being translated into Edo language.

So it all starts with the oga at the top!

It's not a must, as the president is not obligated by the law or constitution.

That said, it would be a great insult to the memory of Chinua Achebe, especially because things have gotten worse compared to GEJ's govt in which he rejected the third highest national award (CFR) —because of corruption and poverty in the country.

OP, you read Achebe, but you don't know the man.

It's a big deal, in fact, the biggest deal but which we've been deliberately kept dumb about.

It actually needs to start by writing in our native language because that's how everything got destroyed in the first place. The same way literature and culture were destroyed is exactly the same way it would be restored back.

And nobody says that we shouldn't study English or even write in English. But nothing in history guarantees that white people and their civilization and language would last forever. Many civilizations have come and gone throughout history. If you just go back a little in history, Latin and Greek used to be the language of Europe. But today Latin is dead, Greek is spoken in just one country. So did the ancient Egyptian language die. So did Sumer and others.

We have ignorantly staked the survival of our culture upon the success of white people. We have ignorantly mortgaged the survival of African cultures on belief that white civilization is immuned against destruction like the many civilizations that have come and gone before them. That's a very dumb thing to do. We have everything it takes to stand on our own language.

You don't need to write in English to win a nobel laureate. More Chinese writers have won the nobel laureate writing in Chinese than those who won writing in English. But what they do is write their books in their beautiful Chinese language, then translate to English. Do you know that there are more English speakers in China than the whole of Nigeria? But every Chinese has mastery in the Chinese language, not in English.

We can write our books in our beautiful native African languages, then translate to English and win a nobel laureate. If we're to be said to be in our right state of mind, the mastery in writing should be in our native language, not in someone else's language. We are keeping our intellectual property in someone else's language!! Oh, my people perish for lack of knowledge
