I think they could see that the state electoral commission is easily manipulated and used by the state governors. There is a need for an independent electoral commission that is not answerable to the governors to handle the election matters in the local government.

But INEC can do the job instead of wasting tax payers money creating and maintaining another commission. It's just for them to have offices in each local government to handle election matters there

Inec that is complaining over burden already?

I like how dis government is doing restructuring codedly.... Na fuel price remain
This is not restructuring but centralization of power at the centre. In a restructured system, regional govts or state govts as we now have would be responsible for many of the things the central govt (FG) has saddled itself with.
While we are crying that the FG and the president is becoming more powerful than they should be, they are taking on more powers which ordinarily and in a federal state should be for the state govts.

Why is FG so desperate to control LGAs?
They want to be installing LGA chairmen through INEC.I hope this not all about the RUGA agenda.

What's wrong with these people? You have INEC and still considering the establishment of LGIEC with the clearly the same duties and responsibilities. I haven't seen a spendthrift and confused country such as ours.

It's likely going to be a federal agency in charge of holding LG elections.

It's a good move in my own opinion.
Why didn't they allow INEC to conduct the elections, the move is just wasting of resources, time and financial
The elections need to be conducted the same day as scheduled for the governorship election. The LG ballots paper and boxes are the only things to be added.

So state should still be conducting lgas elections abi? Una never cry tire.

Duplication of responsibility with inec. Additional recurrent cost. Our leaders are not cost-conscious at all.

Local governments electoral commission? Why did they put it that way? Why have they overlooked INEC? How can they guarantee fairness? Have they still not played into the hands of governors, seeing that governors, both serving and ex are not happy about the Supreme Court ruling? What would be the difference between state electoral commissions and local government electoral commissions? Who are those to be appointed into the respective offices nationwide? Wonโ€™t they be card carrying members of the respective states leadership?

Our politicians everyday device means of playing the people. The people, rather than wake up and ask for accountability, support them with their very oppressive policies.

Why not create a department in inec to handle Local Government elections

Why create a fresh agency that will increase cost of governance

The major problem with this tinubu administration is they never think tru the policy before implementing it, they donโ€™t consider the big picture or the aftermath

Same thing happened with subsidy removal and naira floating

The cost in local government elections will be overwhelming

I also thought they will empower INEC to conduct LG elections.

Purely own goal.

Reelection would be so easy. That must be a proxy request from the state governors.

Can the LG oversight themselves?
nop Inec will be in charge not the writing and announcement of result

f**l. When you're ignorant you start off by asking questions. INEC is funded by consolidated revenue. That's why it's called independent. Federal agency conducting LG election means that local government is no longer autonomous but an appendage of the FG.

Obviously you cannot comprehend, so you didnโ€™t read or is it that you donโ€™t understand what you read. The Senate is proposing an independent local government election body just like and be funded like INEC.

Understand it very well. The federal will appoint people to conduct local government elections different from Inec but not choosen by governors.

Rather than work towards ensuring cleaner elections at INEC and SIEC levels, these incompetent beings have resorted to rewriting the laws to further entrench corruption at all levels and make it even more difficult for Nigerians to dig themselves out of it if they ever decided they were ready to do so. Now, I see why a complete repealing of all laws enacted during the last 25 years is at least necessary to stem corruption in that Nation. undecided
