Good question. INEC can be empowered to hold LG elections
Empower INEC that gave you the last election that even international bodies came out in public to condemn. The same INEC that has not been able to get its acts together due to corruption from the top down? Why can't they work towards stemming out corruption in both INEC and SIEC? That would be a cheaper alternative and serve the people even better, don't you think? undecided

Well, regardless of the tales you wish to tell, what I know is that international observers, many of whom were neutral parties, announced that the election was a sham, and INEC admitted to failures at many of its polling booths. You go argue that with them. undecided

Governors go collect what exactly? They get off scot-free by this approach from the Government. Rather, it is the Nigerian people who will collect the most with an increase in government size and opportunities for more looting by government officials! lipsrsealed lipsrsealed

Purely own goal.

Reelection would be so easy. That must be a proxy request from the state governors.

Can the LG oversight themselves?

Try to read, understand before posting - The commission will be FG agency. It'll not be under the control of local government.

It's was all good while reading through until I got to the part of a 'federal agency'......

Any electoral system where the power to appoint the chairman or Rec officials reside with the president or governor is a sham and will never guarantee a free and fair!
Certainly won't be independent!

Who over sights the FG - National assembly. Who over sights SG - State assembly. Who will oversight LG - LG council (counsellors)

If LG gets full autonomy, you expect money to get to grassroots.

Why not create a department in inec to handle Local Government elections

Why create a fresh agency that will increase cost of governance

The major problem with this tinubu administration is they never think tru the policy before implementing it, they don’t consider the big picture or the aftermath

Same thing happened with subsidy removal and naira floating

I agree with you.

INEC staff work 1 year only and the next 3 years they are mostly redundant.

You did not even read the news very well before responding. You did not read that this agency will be a federal agency just like INEC and not state or local government agency. Haba!!!. Half education is not good at all

You remember that all aspiring presidential candidates have to go through the 36 states including Abuja but Local government chairmen have to go to meet the governor at the state secretariat to lobby. Now governors will now go to meet council chairmen at the local government level especially if he's willing to win the governorship election. So the power of the president increases while of the governor diminished. Congratulations to Tinubu for his re-election made easy for 2027

The federal govt want to be in control of everything in nigeria this bill will surely empower any dictator that becomes president of nigeria he will deal with any state governor that is not in good terms with him.

There is no need for any other agency to conduct Local Government elections when there is INEC. At a time when we need to keep expenses low, these people are looking at avenues for wastage and cronyism to fix their relatives and cronies to the national feeding bottle. Elections are not done on a monthly or annual basis. Most of even INEC staff are redunywhen there are no elections. To imagine such a stupid bill is being pushed by someone with oversight in Finance, who should know the financial situation of the country.

Another federal agency for local government? What a contradiction!
It's not Federal agency. It's local government agency being given tasks to enshrine more electoral fraudulence because I don't see local governments conducting elections freely and credibly themselves without unprecedented bias.
INEC should have been given the job directly after all they are the one conducting both federal and state governments elections.
