What happens to INEC

Does the INDEPENDENT NATIONAL ELECTORAL COUNCIL not cover local government

WHATS WRONG WITH OUR LEADERS

Maybe they should create a unit under INEC and independent of INEC and people apply to be appointed by the NASS and not the president.

House of Reps wants Abuja INEC to organise LGA elections while senate wants to set up LGA election umpires. I'm still wondering why many democracies haven't discarded this useless bicameral legislature.
Any of the options is ok by me, as long as these covers don't organize elections. They have abused their powers.

Reason I don't want them to have state police.

This is very wrong and I don't know why people don't see it. This will lead to a complete state capture by the ruling party.

In true democracies like america, federal agencies are not responsible for conducting state elections. We have seen how the ruling party removes and makes governors at will.

If inec, a federal agency, is allowed to decide the electoral process of states in Nigeria, then the state agency for elections should be totally responsible for the conduct of local government elections in their domains.

In my opinion inec should only conduct federal elections while state elections agency should be responsible for state elections while local government elections agency should be responsible for local government elections.

This is the opposite of true federalism and we are just concentrating everything in Abuja which is very wrong. States needs their independence. We can't continue in this unitary system of government that is stifling development and promoting tribalism and political rascality.
Sometimes, I feel we're victims of bad leadership, but I also feel we're victims of bad folllowership too. If not, what would cause you to give this skewed reasoning?

You have seen how these SIECs in the state write results without election and give the chairmanship seats to the ruling party in the state, you want that nonsense to continue. At least, with INEC, opposition parties win elections, where have you seen opposition party win an election in state-conducted elections?

Why are we blind to our problems and solution? State-capture...yen yen... Using term because you hear people using it.

We can't be victims of our own laws. Federalism my foot. Pick what works for your system and tweak the federalism to fit it. When the federal government conducted the LGs elections in the past, how many states did it capture via that?

I can't believe any sensible human would still support the state to conduct LGs elections despite the abuse of the process they're known for.

If you believe the state should continue, you're an enemy of development. You know they won't do the right thing.

If you really want financial autonomy for the LGs, you must give them the power to choose their chairmen -those who live with them, not those handpicked by the governors. That's devolution of power.
In fact, the governors don't deserve the state police.

Another federal agency for local government? What a contradiction!
..but the state agency manipulates results to favour the state government of the state to win all the local government areas..no oppositiyparty can win even one single state

..it's the local government that will organize the election not federal government or agency

I see! So, the current Local Government Chairman will organize an election to unseat himself from office? You do know that Local Government Chairmen don't have term limits like the FG and Governors do, right? They are like Senators so they can serve back to back for life. grin

I think it's really needed.

No it’s not. This just puts the parties grassroots leadership back in the hand of the FG where LG elections will be decided by federal ministers in the states.

Purely own goal.

Reelection would be so easy. That must be a proxy request from the state governors.

Can the LG oversight themselves?

If you read the post well, they said it's a Federal controlled agency that will be responsible for conducting the elections, so unless the Governors have Federal power, they cannot influence much

Police should be under LGA and they can donate some of their members to the state.
